How many people use/own a Mac now? Love 'em? Hate 'em? What's your take on 'em?

I bought the old school iMac 2 years ago, upgraded to the G5, and haven't looked back since. Now all I need are a set of soundsticks and a winning lottery ticket to buy one of their displays. The only Microsoft product I use now is Office. That's it.

eh, i use macs a lot in my lab and just on campus. personally I prefer pc better. the mac has some killer eye candy software, but that's all. As for ease of use, i think the pc is much better in how it handles things. just my opinion, but macs aren't as good as hyped. they crash....a lot. a well configured pc with clean install of xp pro will be on par with macs stability wise. only thing macs can gleam over a pc on is graphics editing (or so i'm told) but from my expereince, i can't tell a diff.

Mostly used them in scientific settings, and they would crash often. In the end, I used them for data collection (as the equipment was hooked up to them) but did the number crunching and analysis on a PC.

Currently, I only use them to test web apps and design on Mac-only browsers.

I'd consider them for audio use, as the closed nature of the system makes it a suitable platform, but lately that's not worth the price. PCs have ASIO sound so the sound performance is the same, more audio software than the Mac (see the latest Sweetwater catalog), and has open hardware which makes it a lot cheaper to build a solid rig. Macs for audio beat PCs only in terms of mobile laptop rigs, since Mac laptops are built with nearly the same sound specs as the desktop counterparts, and PC laptops are generally specced for business. With pro USB soundcards and MIDI interfaces though, mobile PCs can rock an iBook any day.

For a closed system, OS X is pretty cruddy. I mean, they know exactly what kinda hardware they have to support, and there isn't that much of a range; something on the order of 8 video chipsets from two manufacturers, and the gamma is totally messed up. Windows, on the other hand, has to support thousands of devices, some of which aren't even invented yet. Linux does the same. And they do much better than Apple's 1:8 failure ratio. I donno where their quality control is. You get incidents like this where they pull an update because it's totally broken (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=39332). I guess all the money is going towards marketing. They were a lot better back in the Apple II days.

I've got myself a 15 inch Powerbook. Never regret buying it.

I use it for multi-media purposes when I'm moving about. Also since my other desktop computer that I built back at home is now been used by my mum, it was better for me to get the powerbook for privacy stuff.

Not to mention my bad experience with PC laptop - crashed out on me whilst doing a presentation to a client...

coulda been worse, ive read news stories where a priest giving a power point had child porn on his comp and accidentally had it show up (tried to say it was a virus)

and i read on dilbert.com (where a lot of jaded employees post "stupid boss" stories) where a dumb boss went to whitehouse.com (instead of gov) and got to that infamous porn site (which he later bookmarked)

I will probably never get into Macs again. They are far too limited with applications.

I have to agree with you on that actually, they really are limited in the amount of applications. However, it has not effected me too much because I've got most of the application I need to do my work.

I'm either going to buy an iBook on my own or inherit my husband's iBook and let him upgrade to a Powerbook. The iBook has virtually all the power and utilities I'd ever need. Plus I need a Mac since my aura kills PCs.

I have a 14" ibook. I love it, I networked our house using apple's airport wi-fi and all my roomates and I have wireless broadband now. I love having an apple, and if you actually use the apps that it comes with, like iphoto and itunes etc. I do have one gripe and that's I'm a gadget freak, and I love using my PDA, but some of the apps don't come in mac format, and worse some do but only for the OS 9 and not for OSX and they are already pushing the new panther OS....

G4 tower at the crib.

Still using a G3 graphite clamshell iBook when on the go. I gots stickers all over it. When I'm on the subway or in the cafes using it, I get stares like I'm a man from Mars. But sometimes women come up to me asking what I'm doing and so I will never get rid of it.

I wanna get a new laptop, though, so I am torn betwen the new 14" iBooks and the new 15" Ti Powerbooks. Both are G4, so I guess you can't go wrong with either, ne?

My 12" G4 ibook just came in the mail yesterday. I'm happy with it, but I basically bought it solely for work. The fact that it's built on bsd is highly attractive to me.

I need to have a laptop where I can setup a Solaris jumpstart server, ftp server via x-over cable, tftp server, serial tip, etc... I also travel a good deal so a nice 4lb 12" laptop is perfect.

I just finished setting it up(work files, xinetd, music, movies, etc..) and I'm pretty happy with it overall.

Nah, base package. I don't need anything. This is really just a work laptop that happens to house my music, movies, and panda p0rno. 99.9% of my work on this laptop will be done in command line terminal window.

I've been using the iBook with a wireless connection for a while; I'm hooked. Very happy, this has all the features and power I need. My OS upgrade should arrive today so that should speed it up a little more but I still need a desktop PC for gaming.

*newsflash*

Just been reading around and talking to some mates. If you intend to buy the 17 inch PowerBook, you must take very good care when opening and closing the lid.

The reason why is because of the size of the monitor, f not taken good care, you can easily crack the screen, right down the middle.

Thought I shared that out for you to know.

i heard that expose function is pretty cool, along with file encryptions and secure deleting files in your garbage can-aka when you empty your trash can, the portion of the file on the hard drive will be wiped out clean.

im not sure if you can do that in windows.

I'm thinking about upgrading to panther too, but I'm gonna wait until some more of the bugs are worked out. They've already found one where external hard-drives connected to apple machines running Panther have somehow erased the hard-drives, causing all that data to be lost.
