SNL skit was pretty funny too albeit a bit long

basically the guy woh plays Gore and Clinton dressed up as Ahnold and went like "i want to talk about my plan, first..."

and then he talks about crime like "i am against the criminals, with the stealing, and the murder, and the impersonating of the police officers, these thing i am against"

education: "i am for education, with the reading and the writing and the adding of the numbers..."

economy: "i am for the creation of jobs, good jobs, where the people go to do the work and they pay them the money"

I'm worried about the precedent this will set regarding normal elections, since arnie won with such an overwhelming majority.

I don't blame major news networks. They have analysts and stuff who's entire job this past few weeks was to assess and predict the outcome. And the only way they would call it is if the exit polls were so conclusive that they wouldn't look idiotic.

Plus all the candidates conceded before the counting was done, indicating that it was pretty much a given that Arnie's the new governor.

Chris
10-08-2003, 11:24 AM
but remember 45% was against the recall. Since that Arnold got 48% of the pro-recall votes. so technically means Arnold was elected with 26% of the total votes, while davis actually got 45%. I don't call that a majority.

kitty
10-08-2003, 11:39 AM
True, but it was a majority of recall people... I don't think it was fair, but it was enough of a margin for people to call it...

... and it will mean I think that recalls just might work meaning elections won't be definite anymore.

Chris
10-08-2003, 11:53 AM
the difference was only about 5% , if it was an overwhelming majority then it will have been otherwise. But 5% is not a huge majority.

i think arnold would make a great governor. a model and paradigm for all, especially immigrants. if you're driven, if you work hard, if you're persistent and resilient and if you want it bad enough; your dreams are attainable. personal success doesn't come easy. but, if you're willing to pay the price; it can be yours.

This is bad math.

It was 2 different questions. Yes or no to the recall and then which candidate. A yes vote on the recall was not required to answer the second question. Your 26% assumes that a yes vote would have been required.

So even people who voted no for the recall could have voted for Arnold. They are not mutually exclusive.

More people wanted Arnold than Davis. I don't like it, but that's what happened.

In the end, I think Arnold is going to flop in the next 3 years. California's got a lot of problems that Davis, Arnold, Cruz, no one could really solve in 3 years. Whoever won probably would have ended their political career with the victory.

see, i think he was just out to win. that's arnie's whole thing... he's gotta be the best. so to that extent i would agree with you but he hasn't exactly succeeded yet, he just won the election. now comes the nitty gritty when he has to make good on all his promises in a state of voters that were willing to recall the last guy. running the state 24/7 isn't the same workload as acting and the people aren't just fans anymore, they're constituents.

Go arnie...

60% of Cali voted, which is fairly impressive, especially for a non Presidential year... democracy works... the majority view has been pushed through and the people that the majority wanted has been voted in... this is a day to be happy, because the process works... you may not like who was elected, but it does show that the process, does work and that is a good thing... especially with all of the fucked up people being elected into office with like 35% voter turn out....

Californians have announced they support a TOTAL RECALL....RUNNING MAN Arnold Swarzenegger TERMINATES the competition. I predict they will soon say....new gov polices state like a KINDERGARTEN COP.

To me this is just another example of the BUSHing down of America. People now-a-days are willing to elect unqualified, questionably intelligent people with famous names (and good hair) as heads of state...just because it SEEMS like it would be okay to do so. All image and illusion....no substance.

Arnold has an MBA and he is not as dumb as some might think ...

Schooling is a poor measure of true intelligence....which is the ability to learn and understand things, or what ppl think when they say "smart." In college, 95% of what is learned is rote memorization, most of which is forgotten if not excercized in the real world.
Even if it is retained, it is still only knowledge, not inherent intelligence. Which types of knowledge are considered important is purely subjective. A retarded person is going to KNOW the way around his own house better than Stephen Hawkings would. Does that make the retard more intelligent?? NO, just more knowledgeable about that subject.
I personally think LAZY ppl like me are smarter than the bookworms from my university. Afterall, I managed to skate through college w/ slightly above a B average w/ very little studying. I learned how to absorb material during lectures by actually listening instead of taking notes. I also became a master of last minute cramming and of effeciently taking multiple choice tests.

From everything else I've seen and read about Arnold, and from his direct quotes....I feel the Arnold = dumbass remark is pretty accurate. Not to mention he has NEVER even hinted on how he plans to do all the good things he promised he will do. And btw, the guy owns a fleet of HUMMERS....I mean how stupid is that?? (the answer: VERY!!)
If most Californians were smart they would have supported Peter Uberoff....a proven businessman who helped rebuild LA after the riots and organized the very successful 1984 LA Olympics. He actually had a plan to bring jobs back to Cali....but nobody was listening!!

Eileen Gunn, editor of the sci-fi magazine Infinite Matrix, has solicited comments from sci-fi writers concerning the new governer here (http://www.infinitematrix.net/faq/editorials/index.html).

William Gibson

I forget whether, in the Virtual Light books, Arnold is president of the US or merely Governor of SoCal, but, hey, it looks like I've gone and been prescient again. I hate it when that happens.

Harlan Ellison

To all the other 49 states — with the exception of Minnesota, whose election of a mountebank transcends even ours — the coronation of Ahnuld seems phantasmagoric. But not to us. We've done it at least twice before: George Murphy to the Senate, and Reagan to the White House. So, been there, seen that, done that. I thought, early on, that it was a great slate with Gary Coleman and Schwarzenegger both running: remember in MAD MAX: BEYOND THUNDERDOME, the behemoth called "Master Blaster" — this seven-foot-tall brain-damaged, muscle-bound giant, with the midget strapped to his shoulders? Wow, what a terrific Governor we'd have if we just cranked Gary Coleman down onto Ahnuld's shoulders!! As long as nobody blew a high-pitched dog whistle, we'd be in sweet milk an' honey. So what do I actually think about all this foofaraw? To quote Thomas Jefferson, who was rewording Joseph de Maistre: "People get pretty much the kind of government they deserve."

Gardner Dozois

I notice that while there was (by sheer coincidence, of course) an Arnold Schwartzennger film festival running on the Sci-Fi Channel on election day, there was no Gray Davis film festival running there, or on any other channel.

I like how it seems everyone is sitting here expecting Arnold to fail or is some sort of laughing stock. There #1 is no proof that he can't govern and #2 there is some assumption that becuase he aligns himself with the republican party that he is a right wing conservative that hates minorities.

#1 What is the biggest complaint people have of people running for office? That they are career politicians and have done nothing but been in the political circle for their entire careers. Arnold is not that and he is getting slapped around becuase he has no perceived political background. He was called by Newt Gingrich as a citizen governor, a governor elected that has no experience, but understands what citizens deal with. He just needs to accept that it is not as quick to fix things as he thinks they are.

#2 Arnold is pro choice, he is pro immigration, he is pro environment, he is pro same sex marriage. Hardly republican stances.

There is a piece in the New Republic (A very liberal magazine) stating that Arnold is the new breed republican. A republican that has left leaning social views but right leaning fiscal views. He appeals to the new voters, the ones that care about taxes and how their money is spent and is not really mired in social issues. They don't care is gays get married, or if you want an abortion or not. But they are accepting if it is available.

The democrats have no unity in their party, they are always just one show horse ponies. You are slowly watching as this 'new breed' of Republican shows up. Hell, even a democratic leaning magazine is telling people to worry about this new republican. Arnold, if anything is a moderate with the title of Republican. Hopefully there will be more people like him running in other elections. The fiscal ideals of the the right and the social ideals of the left, is almost the uberman of politics.

i don't think there's anything new about these "new breed" Republicans. Coastal Republicans, at least northern East Coast Republicans, have been like this at least for the last 6 years? in fact, after the "Republican Revolution" of 1994, a lot of Democrats became like these "new breed" Republicans; but the credit went to Clinton as the trailblazer of these "new Democrats."

haha, i was listening to the radio earlier and they were like "he urged Gray Davis not to sign last minute legislations in his final waning days of office" and i was thinking what if?

"Drunken Gray Davis legalizes everything"

-AP Sacramento, California

A visibly drunk Gray Davis addressed the press this morning saying that he had "legalized everything." When asked for details Gray Davis slurred "wtf do you think it means? everything under the sun baby, murder, armed robbery, DUI, assault rifles, nuclear weapons. Hell go ahead and grope somebody, cuz the exterminator (likel a mistaken reference to recently elected arnold schwarzenneger) was gonna do that anyway"

A clearly awkward Cruz Bustamante stood by, putting a hand on Davis' shoulder but Davis grew belligerent screaming "Don't touch me you traitor (likely a reference to the fact that Bustamante still holds the Lt. Governor position and now works under Gov. Schwarzenneger"

Such behavior is not entirely unheard of, after conceding the 2000 presidential election, Al Gore had a drunken party and stunned the room when he announced that he was in fact a robot sent from the future

Bill Maher addressed Arnorld's alleged ability to govern w/ this question: "what makes Arnold a more legitimate candidate than Gary Coleman??" His audience laughed. He theen asked the question, seriously this time, to the Republican who brought about the recall. The Republican answered awkwardly "Arnold is taller" nobody laughed. I think the question was not just a joke....it was very revealing, as Maher had intended it to be.
But of course, I am forgetting........Arnold attended a couple of Republican fund raisers....and he is married to Maria Shriver. Okay MY BAD he is qualified to lead the 5th largest economy of the world. :retard:

He was called by Newt Gingrich as a citizen governor, a governor elected that has no experience, but understands what citizens deal with.

But the point is that he has no political experience, he is a citizen of California and obviously has views in regards to how things should be done, just like everyone else here does. What makes him a less viable govenor than Gray Davis? Just becuase he has money, is that a red mark against him? He has a general understaind og how politics is and he also has a standard of how he wants the state to be run, just like most of the people within California does. The issue about having money versus not having money is a moot point. He still understands the basic tenet that if the people have more money to spend, the economy gets better. A very Republican ideal, smaller government.

In regards to identifying with the regular Californian, he is pro life, pro environment, for same sex marriage, for immigration - these social issues are so Californian that it is sickening.

I just think the people that are against Arnold are basically seeing him as some body builder that can't think for himself, when in fact he should be given a fighting chance, instead of everyone expecting impending doom from him.

i don't think there's anything new about these "new breed" Republicans.

Oh, but there is a huge difference, the conservative right is so locked around the religious right that the minute you say republican you almost are assured of hearing something about them setting their moral directive upon the people (at least from a democrat).

The New Democrats still believed in government programs and were all about increasing the size of government, thinking that if they created enough programs that they would help everyone. The New Democrats have been soundly defeated and brushed out congress and they are being filled with Republicans.

I think we can agree on a few things here. Democrats are good on the social issues (in most cases) and Republicans are good on the fiscal issues (in most cases). This new breed of politician (be it a democrat or republican) is going to benefit everyone, socially and economically. Hopefully the democrats will get their act together and start shedding this welfare party mold, or they are going to be in real trouble in the future, even more so than now.

Yeah.....owning a fleet of Hummers. So he is going to lead by example, huh?? If everyone in LA owned a Hummer there would be nowhere to park....and the air would be too thick to breathe.

And I hear rumors that he has coverted one or more of them to gas/electric to appease his critics, which is just retarded. Why not just buy a hybrid car??

Most people are basing their evidence on fear.. They are so used to the satus quo that Davis and company has been offering California, that they just don't know any better.
