I'm looking for a sturdy yet stylish toiletry organizer optimized for travel. It would be nice if it came with refillable bottles and the organizer were washable. Any recommendations?

It really depends on what you're looking for, in terms of basic form-factor: an old-school dopp-kit sort of thing? A folding, hangable thingamabobber...a large, female-style tackle box?

I use a thing that came with the wheeled convertible pack I got from REI. It clicks into the internal compression straps and looks sort of like THIS (http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?productId=47599440&storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&langId=-1). But I travel with my larger Victorinox convertible more often and just fold the fucker up since the buckles are a different size in the Victorinox.

I like it this way since I can either lay it flat if I have room that way, or I can roll it up if it fits better that way. But...I have to be careful that nothing's going to leak.

It really depends on how much stuff you carry with you and how much you need to segment them and all that. Insofar as containers go, you don't have to go with the ones that include containers...you could always just go down to REI or some travel shop and buy generic plastic containers. For $10 you can get an assortment of various sizes or buy individual stuff to mix-and-match.

Which reminds me that I need to go and buy a bunch this week.

Here's my tip of the day: those "envelope" packing things seem like a big waste of money, but I find them invaluable. If you're only going to one destination, it's no big deal. But if you're hopping from city to city, it's really nice to be able to keep all your clothes organized within your luggage and be able to access individual items without extensive packing/repacking.

Anyway, the #1 thing is to make sure you leave enough room in your luggage to tote home strange bottles of liquor.

I say relive your preteen days with Caboodles. (http://www.caboodles.com/caboodles.htm)

I'm so ghetto. I get containers from a beauty supply shop and stick em in Ziplocs, and all of those in a large Ziploc. Usually enough to deal with leaks, and flexible for packing.

I do the same thing. I collect samples of shampoo, toopaste, mouthwash, etc and throw it in a ziploc bag. It saves space!
