anyone know any good sites I can go to search for NY apartments. I'm looking for mainly apartments in manhattan. Doesn't have to be big or nice.. just cheap.
thanks :)

If you go the agent/broker route. Say no to every apartment for two-three weeks. Then they'll start showing you better deals.

I hope you're closer to finding a good place. Yes you can find a studio for $900, most likely in the high upper east side or high upper west side. You'll find better space in more desired locations if you share with a roommate or roommates. Sometimes you'll get lucky and can snag a studio someone is trying to unload in a great area for about $900.
Craig's List is my favorite listing for apartment searching.
If you're going the broker route, try Urban Habitats. They found my roommate and I a great two-bedroom for about $1500. Unbelievable in NYC. I would pay a broker 8% at the very maximum. Any more is robbery. You can knock it down to 4% by asking the broker if your building management is paying half. They won't tell you unless you look ready to walk away or unless you ask.
Keep in mind that it sometimes takes weeks to find the perfect place. I believe average among my friends and I was about 2-3 weeks. We also saw over 30 apartments.

i found my apt through newyork.craigslist.com
900 for a studio in manhattan is cheap. it's probably WAAAAY uptown in the ghetto parts of the island, or some closet on a bad block.
my studio on the upper east side is $1500, which is on the upper side, but it is pretty big for manhattan (550 sq. ft).
craigslist is great, but you must move fast when you spot something.
i'm looking again for a place in chelsea or the east village and i'm going the broker route this time.
if you want straight CHEAP, i'd get a roommate.
