View Full Version : Emigrating?

Has anyone considered leaving the US? Sure, it's a great country in many ways, but many ways not. Life is about trade-offs. Other countries are better in some areas, worse in others. Especially in regards to racial/social attitudes - they vary widely with location. So, it may be far easier to change locations than change entrenched attitudes in your location. Has anyone ever considered moving somewhere else? And if so, where?

Eh, this probably belongs in Whatever. Or Rant. Or Diaspora. Or maybe Food and Travel.
Be aware of the various sections which YW is divided to. Rule of thumb, if it's not in the newspaper, it probably shouldn't go in Current Events.

My wife and I have considered emmigrating after grad school, if I can't get in the foreign service. Not sure where though..thinking about Canada. This country is just too racist, and I am hesitant to raise kids here to be honest. I honestly don't think this is a good place for a black or partially black person to grow up..

Oh, woops, maybe the mods can move it over for me then.
I honestly don't think this is a good place for a black or partially black person to grow up..
I would add Azn kids as well.

I am planning to. Either to Canada or Australia. More in tune of philospohy and lifelstyle. :D

How is Australia? They've been publicized for anti-sinoistic immigration policies and problems with South Indian gangs. Although the few Ozzies I've met travelling have all been pretty cool. So, how are the attitudes towards Azns there?

Please come to Canada. We love you. We need you.
*welcomes new people with open arms*
Try for Vancouver, actually. I'm always promoting Vancouver because it has everything you could ask for in a comfortable West-Coast-ish relaxed environment. You can even watch the Winter Olympics in 2010 if you're lucky.

Canada sounds attractive...except for the weather. :(
How cold does it get up there?

Well, you won't be buried in snow or drowning in rain if that's your worry. Despite all of the bad press Canada gets weather wise, I feel confident in saying that we can blame Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba for the slags regarding snow. :P
Vancouver's like Seattle. We get rain, we get snow (but not too much) and we have nice summer days like today. Temperatures during the summer range from the mid-twenties to the low thirties (a rare occurance.) When winter rolls on by, expect no less than -6 degrees Centigrade on really cold days with an average between the six or seven points above zero and three below.

Actually, up until around the end of high school, I'd always figured I'd go back to Cali after I graduated, and that I'd raise my kids there, but now, I'm a lot more in favor of going overseas.
1. I hate driving in traffic. I really hate paying $30 to take a cab back from a bar after I'm drunk, or relying on a designated driver. And I hate being mugged even more. I wanna live somewhere with good public transit and low crime. Cleveland wasn't very inspiring when I visited there. The US doesn't have a high enough population density to support good public transit.
2. I'd rather be close to Asia so I can travel around and see more different countries, as opposed to the US, which is too big a nation on too small and unvaried a continent.
3. I don't want my kids to grow up monolingual and monocultural. But growing up in the US, it's almost inevitable, no matter how many people confuse "multiracialism" with "multiculturalism."
4. I especially don't want my kids growing up in shallow, materialistic, whitewashed "Asian American culture."
5. Wherever I raise my kids, that's gonna be their default fall-back position and their jumping-off point for their own careers. And to put it bluntly, I'm not confident in the long-term economic prospects of the US, especially with increasing government wastefulness and interference in the economy, the loss of high-tech manufacturing jobs to Germany and Japan, and our ridiculous hundreds of billions of dollars in trade deficits each year.

Fahrenheit...yes...Amerikaners. :)
Girls are pretty too, though a rather disproportionate number are picky in terms of how wealthy their boyfriends are. This probably has much to do with the fact that having plenty of moolah seems to be the norm among many Asian teenagers and young adults in the Lower Mainland. Money grubbers, the lot of 'em...*grub* *grub* *grub*
But don't let that put you off. Everyone else is friendly and accomodating.

i'll probably be moving back to HK. and maybe i'll spend some years in mainland China (maybe Shanghai), depending on what opportunities are available to me.
living standards are definitely higher in the US. but what can i say, i consider HK as my home. i love HK people and the culture (and that doesn't mean that i think it's perfect).
and i also share the same reasons that Alibaba cited.

I don't know how the californians can stand this heat all the time.
it's scorching here in vancouver right now.
but i'm sure californians wonder how we can stand a couple months of rain each year.
my take, i like change, a bit of everything in all four seasons.

No. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area? Why would I want to leave?
Actually...the thought of doing a short stint in a foreign city is a fun one. Doesn't particularly matter where -- the idea would just be to experience a new place. But I've travelled widely enough and have done enough summer stints to know that I already live where I always want to live.

Hmm reasons I would like to emigrate or move in general:
1. After schooling I'd probably consider living as an expat in Taiwan or maybe Mainland China for purely economic and lifestyle reasons, the US economy kind of looks like it's going down the shitter. If the economy here really does go down the shitter, it'll always reflect on minorities' having harder lives. No thanks. I don't think I'd want to raise my kids in a monocultural and monoracial society though. People always end up falling toward the culture they were raised in, and as much as I don't want my kids to be ignorant little whitewashed snots, I don't want them to be ignorant little snotty Chinese kids either. Ideally I'd like to raise my kids the way I was raised here, only without the weird and freaky racism and upheavels the SG Valley experienced when I was growing up and someplace more liberal and far more stable. Maybe in one of the more diverse suburbs they have in Sac or in SF somewhere, or Canada even.
2. Canada seems like a good prospect in terms of lifestyle and idealogies. I have the impression most of the Chinese there are Canto though, although I can't say I've been there much except to see some of my folk's friends in Vancover and Toronto and some pretty scenery. Loved it to death everytime I went though. I really hate how radically conservative the climate of America is becoming lately and how ethno-centric it is. It's probably also the most selfish and materlistic place on earth. God, I hope China doesn't become like that because of its expotentially increasing economy. No thanks, I pick we before me.
3. A lot of of the kids I grew up with commented they'd never raise their kids in the same area because of factors that reflect on America, what do you do? I don't want my kids to be self-centered little whitwashed snots anymore than the next guy. I've also realized that unless I live in a really ethnic immigrant neighborhood, my kids will probably turned out to be whitewashed little snots who want to kill white people, but I really don't think I want to deal with the problems and of the limitations of those neighborhoods for so much of my life. Frankly, I've had enough. No thanks.
4. Like so many, I hate driving. I haven't driven for that much and I have fantasties of blowing up my car and the freeway and fantasties about subways and riding them happily in Boston, NY, or SF. It never ceased to amaze me when I'm on the T or I can take a bus somewhere. One of the many reasons why I wouldn't want to live in the LA area anymore unless I'm an old sugar mama.
5. Racism. I agree with Ras, it's already really hard not to be white in America, I'd hate to have the increased problems of raising multiracial kids and all that extra worrying. There's too much non racial and cultural awareness and intolerance in the US that it manages to never stop disturbing me. Things don't like it's exactly turning for the better either. I would never live in outside of a major metro area in the US unless I absoletely had to and had no money and had to take a job becuase no one would help me and I lost my limbs and mind too. No thanks to America's phobia and ignorance in dealing with race and culture.
That was a rant.

Can I copy and paste your finely written report and sell it on termpaper.com?
:P
j/k!
Good summary though, I agree with you on 90%.

Meh... I like the US. I have thought about living in England . Perhaps Australia. Though, I think I want to at least travel to those places before I decide to move to them. :P

No. No, I don't. Nor would I want to. I volunteered my time there during the 12th Grade for a rotten Career and Personal Planning course (needed it to graduate) and absolutely hated it. Lies, lies, lies...it's all lies!
Well...okay...not "lies" per se, but like every tourism board they tend to exaggerate just a wee bit. Vancouver's genuinely great to live in, however.

England's very nice. London's dirty like any big city but if you live in the suburbs it ought to be okay. Better still, live in the countryside.

Okay Max (or any other Aussies) give me some juicy details about Australia. There's a good chance I'll be moving there in about five years. Does it have a decent sized Chinese population? How about quality of schools, crime levels, current naitonal issues?

I like the US. Unless things really go south, I'm not that eager to move.
Both Australia and New Zealand have huge issues with racism against Asians and Aboriginies. I know that Australia had a whites-only immigration problem up until 30 years ago and there's still ill will towards Asian immigration. even though it has died down quite a bit from the 1990's when the One Nation party was fairly strong.
If I could get my French back up to par, I wouldn't mind living in Paris. Or London or Brussels. I'd probably stick to Europe. I can't really take the materialistic anti-intellectualism that's so prevalent in mainland China (I like my pseudo-democracy) and Taiwan's independence is dying the stronger the mainland gets. I need more cultural and educational fuel than most of East Asia can give me given my language skills.

I don't think you can get a more multicultural country than it. O.K, so its got problems with its racist legacy and you have quite a few ignorant people there, but to pretend that other countries would treat you much better is pure stupidity in my opinion. You have chances to become doctors, lawyers, engineers, and so forth if you apply yourself. Minorities have a far greater chance to succeed there than any other country in the world -- that's what you call the American dream. I'm not denying there's no racism -- there is, but it seems like if you've got talent, tenacity and of course, contacts :P (j/K) you can make it big. Hell, think of all the immigrants dying to cross over into America to try and get better lives for themselves and for their children. If I had to choose between living in NYC or living in Saudi Arabia I know, for sure, which country I'm going to pick.
Well of course if you're comparing the US to some terror-exporting oil tyranny in which the main role for foreign labor is to be abused and beaten to death (http://www.arabnews.com/?page=1§ion=0&article=29520&d=29&m=7&y=2003) or if you're lucky, sent home at the end of your term with no hope for citizenship, the US comes out shining like the sun.
But there's other countries which have a similar record to the US of openness to minorities, and good opportunities in the professions. Most of them probably will also have better future economic performance since their economies weren't so hollowed out by the alleged "information revolution," and they don't try to import hundreds of billions of dollars of consumer goods every year and pay for it by exporting debt.
NYC compared to Jeddah? Of course everyone chooses NYC. NYC compared to Vancouver, London, Singapore, Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, or Hong Kong? Not so sure.
Does HAWAII count? :P It doesn't really have the mainland American mentality.

From what I perceive, the mentality is the same. It's just the racial demographic that is either reversed or very different from the mainland.

I imagine Hawaii in my fantasies to be islands of great beachs, jaw-dropping natural beauty, a more laid-back atmopshere, REALLY great weather all year... and orgies full of Asian people 24/7 cause there ain't much out there in the Islands.

I've always wondered what it would be like to live in one of those Antarctic research stations. Actually, it'd be fascinating to find out what it'd be like to live in a part of the world where there is perpetual winter.

French was forced upon us when we were in the 5th Grade. :( It's a pretty easy language to pick up though. Much easier than German, if you ask me. Good luck Chris!
