Vancouver got the bid. Rejoice!!!
Congrats. I'm glad. Being in North America, this slims down New York City's chances of winning in 2012.

what's so bad about having the olympics in NY?
Wouldn't it be a GOOD thing?

Korea almost shockingly won outright in the first vote.
With a simple majority needed for victory, Pyeongchang won the first round with 51 votes, but fell short of the 54 votes necessary to win the bid in that round. Vancouver followed with 40 votes and Salzburg received 16. Salzburg was eliminated, setting up a vote between Vancouver and Pyeongchang.
Vancouver then defeated Pyeongchang 56-53 in the final round.

Who votes or is in charge of this kind of stuff, and/or how is this process carried out, and what criteria is used? Just curious for anyone who might actually know.

I think each member country of the IOC gets 1 vote. Any candidate which receives a simple majority of votes in any round wins. After each round, if no cities receive a majority, the last place city is eliminated and they hold another round of votes.
Apparantly Vancouver received all of Austria's votes. Europe voted in a bloc first for Austria and then for Canada.

Theoretically, the tourism generated would be excellent for the region. Given the nature of the city, most of the facilities and events would actually occur in New Jersey, New York State, and Connecticut. As I live here, I don't want the region investing in creating the facilities, roads, the brib^H^H^H^Hbidding process, etc, required for the Olympics. The added tourism means more traffic and basically more commotion that isn't needed. Also, the IOC sucks.

They were like Oh shit, we can't have one of these in Asia. We need it in a whie country like Canada!
Haha j/k..
Tho it looks like Korea gained only 2 votes after salzburg was eliminated. Vancouver gained 16.

For some reason, I can't quote BeTheReds' post...
Actually most of the competition will take place in the city's 5 boroughs
Only basketball and soccer in NJ

To answer SWK...
Yup, Vancouver won the Winter Olympics, like Calgary did for 1988
Each Winter Olympics are 4 years apart from each other, and likewise for Summer, but Winter and Summer have been staggered since 1994
1992: winter - Albertville, France; summer - Barcelona, Spain
1994: winter - Lillehammer, Norway
1996: summer - Atlanta, USA
1998: winter - Nagano, Japan
2000: summer - Sydney, Australia
2002: winter - Salt Lake City, USA
and to come
2004: summer - Athens, Greece
2006: winter - Torino , Italy
2008: summer - Beijing, China
and now
2010: winter - Vancouver, Canada
