Dear YW tech masters:
My computer has driven me insane these couple of days.
It has been extremly sluggish, even for the most menial things, such as surfing the web.
for example, for me to go to weather.com and to check the weathers in different cities uses 100% of the cpu power.
And my computer is reasonably fast, with a 1.7 ghz celeron chip and 256 mb of ram and has window xp pro.
plus i use the ethernet in the dorms, so it shouldnt be this slow.
I scaned for virus and found nothing.
Anyone has any idea on what could be wrong?
:nerd:

You can try to press ctrl+alt+del and check to see which application is pegging the CPU when you notice problems. If there is a problem with a particular application, you can save the necessary files, uninstall the application and re-install it. It's a longshot but you could be running out of room on your HDD and that could cause severe performance problems.

has it gotten progressively slower or just all of a sudden?
is this a prefab comp? dell, hp, etc? and is there a heatwave where you are?

if it's gotten progressively slower dl ad-aware, you might just have shit loads of excess spyware or you have something running in the background. if you've been playig a game, and then after closing it, it seems to stay high...it needs some time to sit, and i'd uninstall it.
if you've recently installed something, that could do it too. or if you're on the network and are sharing music or anime or movies of some sort, people can watch stuff or play stuff on your comp and that'll slow it down.

1) Dl Ad-aware and run it and www.download.com
2) Defrag your computer
3) Remove unnecessary programs from startup

So many different reasons.
Check your HD space too. Does it seem to be working extra hard? Sometimes those darn-old temporary internet files can eat up HD space. Deleting them can help.

10-1 it's because he's sharing files on campus lan and doesn't realise people are playing them off his comp.

Yup check the hd, I just obtained a three year old laptop and its never been defragged in its life, used disk keeper lite and there were over 12000 fragmented files! :o runs like a dream now.

Cool, thanks guys for your insight! :)
However, I dont download music on the net, and i dont share music files....dont even know how to do that nor do i want to do that :D
I've heard of kazza though, but i heard its filled with viruses and spywares and stuff.....
defragmentation of HD may be a good idea, i'll try that and see it it works :D
