Aung San Suu Kyi (http://www.dassk.com)

Her story is amazing.

She stands up to the Burmese military and has single handedly led a peaceful resistance against them.

If you want to read about why so many Asian women in Asia say Aung San Suu Kyi is their hero, I recommend you visit the website.

This is the result of persistence and dedication to a cause. Count me in as an admirer. I'm a sucker for people like Aung San Suu Kyi. Her "Never-Give-Up" mentality should be an inspiration to us all who want to make a difference in this world of ours.

man i like how the burmese govt is like "oh we're holding her for her protection"

and just how long will they let this go on? will they "protect" her for the rest of her life in a 8 X 11?

Probably. I'm sure they'd have executed her by now if they could get away with it.

she'd be a martyr if they executed her. there's a chance she might be even more powerful if she's killed.

Burma was under British rule then Aung San (Aung San Suu Kyi's father) actually got the British to give Burma its independence. Aung San wanted to establish a democracy and just when he was about to make the Burmese constutition, he was assasinated by a political rival.

After Aung san's assasination, Burma was up for grabs. The military generals siezed power never to let go. Burma was prosperous, even Koreans and Chinese migrated there during WWII.

However, under the regime's control Burma has almost went back in time. Now, there are human rights abuses, child labor abuses, schools are shut down to quiet down potential opposition, its a really sad story.

Aung san suu kyi was lucky enough to get out of Burma and study in England. However, she had seen enough in Burma and she decided to return in an effort to free her people. In fact, on August, 8th, 1988. The regime held elections to choose whether the country of burma wanted to Aung San Suu kyi or the regime. Aung San Suu Kyi won by a landslide however, the regime refused to give up their power.

The problem in Burma is that the regime is constricting the people of Burma. The Koreans have known this from Japan, the Chinese do too, the Vietnamese and almost every other Asian country. Burma is the last Asian country to be freed from a regime.

The situation in Burma seems very hopeless, almost two generations of Burmese kids were not able to attend college because the regime had shut down universities and colleges. Hunger runs rampant, nobody wants Burmese refugees.

Aung san suu kyi must prevail, she is the symbol of the progress of Asian women. Whereas men have failed, Aung San Suu Kyi has shown what a frail women could do. She maybe small and frail but her courage is like no other.

In recent news, the regime had propped a plan where Burmese soldiers dressed up as protestors to Aung San Suu Kyi. As a result, a fight broke out between the supporters or Aung San and the hired thugs. many people were killed and Aung San was nearly killed as well. This is just a sample of what Aung San has to face, alot of negative propaganda and even attempts at her life.

VOA article (http://www.voanews.com/article.cfm?objectID=23B20D51-9646-4050-96051CF618E6135A)

There has been a question of her health condition, lately.
