The bowl stays on the table.

Heh! I've learned that there is a certain efficiency to the bowl-to-the-mouth method. Less spillage, less chopstick travel, more volume -- faster. :D

Yep. Wasn't really taught it. But damn it makes life a lot easier when eating rice w/ chopsticks (raised w/ spoons and forks btw). I do eat it w/ the bowl down during a date. Even then, I don't go on much dates. :P

Koreans use spoons and don't lift the bowls.
Japanese and Chinese use chopsticks and lift them.
I do one or the other depending on the situation/type of bowl.

Me? Yes, it's weird. But every time I think of the ricebowl, the chopsticks and the shoveling, images of large construction vehicles come to mind followed by the horrifying thought of getting crushed by one.
Come to think of it, that really is odd.

I used to do that with chopsticks when I was little, now I like to take my time so I leave the bowl on the table, use a spoon or fork, or just lower my head to the bowl and start inhaling.

yes, I would have to agree with you on that.
And using a fork or spoon with a rice bowl just seems wrong.

Well when I use a fork or spoon on rice, the rice is usually on a big-ass plate or if I'm eating at a restaurant (I don't share my food very much and I just finish the entire dish).
dam...I'm hungry now

A daintier shoveling technique I just thought of: get that plastic rice paddle server thingy, scoop up a wad of rice, and eat it off of that. I'm gonna try when I go home. A side benefit is you don't have a bowl to wash. Score.

Yep. I lift and shovel. It's always towards the latter half of my meal. The first half the rice or shi fan is so hot I can't handle the bowl for very long and the bowl is already topped off. Since we usually eat shi fan, I pile some food on the bowl, just a little, then I keep my chopsticks slightly parted to pick up a wad of food and shi fan, sucking it in if it's too drippy. When I get to about 2/3 finished with the shi fan in my bowl, then I start to lift and shovel. Now that I think about it, I do it with regular rice too.

not by instinct. i normally ask for a spoon
and use my chopsticks as a skewer. i haven't
don't the bowl-to-mouth-then-shovel thing
for a really long time. i'll do it for fun once
in a while... it reminds me of those sword
fighting chinese series i used to watch in
4th grade.
yeah... i use a spoon.

i do normally by myself or with family or friends in a casual atmosphere.
only time i don't do it is when i'm in a formal dinner situation with my best friend's family. i also didn't do it in a formal dinner situation with me ex-fiance's family. korean people consider it rude from what i've been taught and told.

koreans use a spoon or chopsticks, depending on the foods it is served with. plus, a lot of times, korean rice is stickier than, say, chinese rice.

I pick my bowl up when I eat and I only "shove" the last few grains of rice into my mouth. That was what I was taught to do. I never just leave my bowl on the table and bend over since that's that "rude" way to eat. No offense intened to anyone who does that, though.
I once went out to dinner in a Chinese restaurant with 5 of my korean friends and they all left their bowl on the table. I'm not sure if they noticed, but people kinda stared since it isnt Chinese custom to leave your bowl on the table.

no.
i play with my food.
make them into ball like structures and pick them up with the chopsticks.
i used to put my chin on the table and my lips to the bowl, and attempt to use the chopsticks as a shovel. . . but that was when i was five and couldn't reach the table.

ditto. i don't think it's rude to lift the bowl. it may be rude to shovel the rice, though. korean and chinese cultures differ in this aspect. i was told by a friend that koreans consider it bad luck - i.e., your luck drops from under the bowl when you lift it. or something to that effect.
i think it looks kinda silly when people *don't* lift the bowl at all. it's not practical and seems to be an indication that the person is an abc. eating rice off one's plate with chopsticks is an indicator that the person is white. but we don't need the indicator to figure that out.

I shovel when I'm at home by myself with with my family or friends in a informal atmosphere. I don't do it if we're eating out or something though. My parents told me it was a low-class thing to shovel food. I kinda hold my bowl and move it around though no matter what though, and tend to scoop too much food off of plates into my bowl.

then you got me at home when i'm alone.
lump everything on the rice in a big bowl.
mash and mix it up
shovel it with a spoon while holding bowl to face.

i'm korean and i rarely use spoons to eat rice. chopsticks for me :D
my family don't eat rice in a bowl..we have our rice on a plate..and tranfer food onto our plate to eat..so there isn't lots of hands traffic at the table. i dont think its weird...our whole extended family does the same...
i rarely bring the plate/bown to my face either...unless i'm really hungry and eat every single grain o rice :D

Oh yeah, I shove my face with rice....unless in front of company....I tend to take it slower and a bit more polite.....but if it were a date situation, I wouldn't normally have taken the girl to a Chinese restaurant.....and I wouldn't ordinarily order rice plates....but with friends and such.....it's bowl in face with chopsticks flying and bits of assorted dishes in between....no time for talking, too busy eating :D

No I don't. I dunno if it's just me but I have this weird OCD thing when it comes to eating the leftover rice stuck on the bowl. I never completely clean my plate because I think my mind thinks it's the equivalent of backwash (how the last swig of a drink is said to be mostly spit, which I'm sure isn't even true but I grew up thinking that way). Same thing with leftover ice cream that melts in the cup, I never ever scrape it and try to get every last bit of it left in there, that's disgusting to me.
