builds up your immunity and helps in recovery of a cold or flu.
they were buying the stuff up in china months prior to the sars epidemic making worldwide news; when isolated cases were popping up in guongdong and the news spread through the local news, local newspaper and word of mouth.

tao,
was there sugar in it?
my mom made it without sugar. it was gross (in my opinion anyways. everybody has a diffierent palate).
but with a little sugar, it was yummy yummy in my tummy for some odd reason.
your mom made it for you?
<br>my parents bought the stuff in packs of 20 or something like that. each cube was wrapped in paper, and i believe they added sugar in the cube. so yeah it was quite delish

oh, man. so gross! I still have to drink those once in a while. When I cough and my mom "detects" flegm or a cold coming or if i've eaten too much fried stuff, she makes me drink them depending on what the diagnosis is. I think the worst part is burping afterwards from downing it too quickly and the taste lingers in your mouth. But Chinese herbal medicine usually is more effective for me as opposed to western medicine.

i LOVE chinese herbal chicken soup. my mom makes it with these little red bean-like looking things and the soup is pure broth. yum!
i've had the really bitter soup before too....actually sometimes i make it with ginseng root & this powder (tian-chee-fen). i put a "young hen" in the crock pot, add like 12 of those ginseng root suckers (actually it's not ginseng...it's a derivative which is not as strong--it's "cool" as opposed to "hot") and some of the tian-chee-fen. after it stews for several hours it's very very tasty & it seems to keep away colds. then again, i wouldn't know b/c i'm so lazy i only make this once every 4 months.
on the same topic....do ur parents ever tell you that some foods are "liang" ("cool") and some things are "huo-chee dah" ("hot"). the cool foods are good for u and the "hot" foods are to be avoided in large amounts. i never could figure out that theory...

yeah mine does.
the huo chi dao dishes refers to the really pungent and stringent dishes i.e. mad salty, mad spicy etc etc
that allegedly stresses your system. i guess adding to your stress level (huo chi) in a way, i.e. making you break out in zits, mild skin disorder, perpetual bad breath etc etc.
so says my mommy.

Man I drank it so much even to this day. I do beleive it works in most cases as I don't get as sick as most of my coworkers and friends do. :)

hm...maybe if each person gets a recipe from his/her mother or grandmother, we could make a little yw herbal soup/medicine recipe book. you guys willing to do this? if so, can you also ask them what it's good for (i always like asking my mom what certain soups are good for - just 'cause i like to pretend that it's doing it's job while i'm drinkin' it.) plus, i think it would be sad to have all of this lost in our generation ...
