View Full Version : Facing my first inadequate grade...

Okay. Apparently, I'm a dumbass. Here I am, facing my very first below C grade and this CANNOT happen if I want to transfer out of my dumb community college and into a REAL institution. Of course the one class that's kicking my ass is the one class I elected to take myself even though I don't need the credit for anything.... PHOTO.

Can anybody tell me if it really makes a difference when I transfer if the one class I failed was an art course and I'm not looking to be an art major? I mean, this will fuck my GPA up royally, right??? I'm going to compose an email to my instructor and pray that he's lenient on me.

I don't know why I made a thread about this. I'm just clinging to my desparate hopes that maybe, somehow, I will get this taken care of.

just try to find a counselor at the admissions office from the college you want to apply, talk to her/him about it, and show her/him your grades from the important classes. I know that at my college at the end all they cared about was about the GPA from classes that were related to my major.

Another thing you can do is take a really easy class that you know you'll ace this summer. I once got a C in goverment so I took an Intro to Spanish class the semester after, and that fixed up my GPA

Can you take the class over to erase the bad grade?

is it too late to drop the class?

^-- If I cannot retake it and have a better grade replace the bad one, nor do I WANT to retake this class.

And, Tao, being that it's 2 weeks away from the final... I'm gonna hafta say... yeah. :X

fin out from other people in your school which classes are really easy to get an A, and enroll them in them next semester, I'm sure that 1 or 2 A's will get your GPA back on track

Well I'm automatically put on academic probation after this quarter cuz i failed this class.... so life's gonna be pretty shitty for a while. late registration dates coupled with budget cuts are going to make it very difficult for me to get the classes i need to take in a timely manner. FUCKING HELL... maybe i'll offer my instructor sexual favors for a passing grade....

if all else fails i.e. talking to the professor, your advisor etc etc.

you should be ok.

just attach an explanation (truth or bullshit) to the application form. or explain to them in person if you're given the opportunity.

you're a smart chica. you'll be fine.

like you said it was an art course and you're not looking to be an art major.

cheer up, it's not the end of the world. Take your time then, right now the job market isn't good and it'll take some years for the US economy to get back on track, so what's the rush to graduate. Take things slowly, do part-time school, and ALWAYS do some reasearch of which classes are the easiest ones.

whoa shit...what uppety-ass community college do you attend?? ^^ You get put on probation after one failed class??? Here at the UW you get put on probation after you get below a 1.0 cum GPA for 2 quarters in a row or sumthin, although I'm not quite sure of the details.

1.0 GPA, that's pretty light. UT Austin was below 2.0

My class is a once a week class... so I only have 3 hours of scheduled lab time a week. When the class is only once a week, we basically have an assignment (usually we have to turn in anywhere from 5-15 prints per assignment) due every other week. I cannot get 3 rolls of film processed and 5-15 prints done in 2 class periods. My work schedule's really hectic, and I have other classes, so I havn't had time to go into the darkroom on unscheduled days. High school photo is easy. These courses are designed for people who are getting ready to dedicate their lives to the photography industry. I am not one of those people. I have priorities that are higher on my list than going out to get a few rolls of film shot.

And my instructor's basing our grades on 4 assignments. The first one was easy and I got done relatively on schedule, the second one is the 16 print assignment, and I'm only halfway through. The third one involves a lot of mounting and spotting, which I havn't had time to do, and the fourth one is our final. The third and fourth assignments are due tomorrow, and next friday respectively, and I have yet to start on either. So as you can see, a decent grade on the first assignment, an incomplete on the second assignment, and I'm not going to pass this class because I don't have the resources to get my last 2 assignments done before the darkroom closes in about a week and a half.

You do NOT need at least straight A's to get into a UC. I think I got one, maaaybe two straight A report cards in all of highschool. You shouldn't be saying your life is screwed so early. At least wait until the end of your junior year. :)

Take AP classes if possible, and try to get at least B's in them. If you get the occasional C, don't worry. The difficulty of the classes is important too, not just the grade.

And FYI, the grades from freshman year don't even go on your application. So chill.

P.S. All the statistics from the UCs and info given on the tours are LIES! 98% of incoming frosh had a GPA of 4.0 and above, 90% were in the top 10% of their class, blah, blah blah. I'm convinced that they just pull that stuff out of their collective asshole.

is it really a good idea to panick about how your life is gonna be fucked cuz you can't get into a UC when someone else is talking about how she's about to fail a class? Sorry I gotta be straight like that.

Angel-- 3.8 and 1590??? Isn't that supposed to be an automatic shoo-in for Berkeley? shiiiiiiiiet your teacher or counselor must have dicked you over on the recs or something.

I thought I'd get into Berkeley, too. *Shrug* I got into all the Cal states and UCI, though... so I guess I can't really complain... maybe I'll get into Berkeley the second time around... if this damn photo class doesn't kill me first.

I don't think I can take an incomplete and finish later.

But yeah, most of the photo majors are supremely stressed out right now.

Honestly I don't think an admissions committee is going to care that you got a C-, D, or F in "Photo."

You can just write a letter saying that you were working nearly full-time and since Photo required a lot of time, you were unable to complete a lot of assignments.

I would think Science, Business, English or whatever you're planning to major in is more important.

angel nympho

^-- I agree with you. Just worried about my GPA... and being put on academic probation automatically sends a red flag up to admissions committees.
