When I came back from Hong Kong and China, SWK, Meena, LW, and everyone nagged me until I went to the hospital 2 months later because during the interim, I was incredibly ill with headaches, coughs, body aches, etc.

Meena told me I had SARS. I didn't believe this. Besides, I'm still alive and eh, 22 years is a good run. I'm a carrier now baby!

Anyhow, I went. When I went in all coughing, the security guard walked up to me and handed me a SARS mask. I said, "I don't have SARS!"

"No one is saying that ma'am...this is just in case you want to use it," he says while nudging the mask closer to my arm.

I sit there hacking for a couple more minutes.

"Uh miss, actually it's hospital policy that anyone with respritory problems use one," says the hospital administrator filling out my form.

I look around at the scores of Caucasians coughing, none with masks on. I put my mask on. People stare.

Hours and countless of x-rays later, my doctor tells me, "You either have allergies or asthma. I'll prescribe you some Claritin and an inhaler."

I throw away the prescription and buy some cough drops. Later that day, I wear the SARS mask to Blockbuster and despite a long line, I get to check out first.

Despite the fact that I'm only a year older than you, I look upon you with a golden expression that only the proudest of fathers could give his daughter. :luv:

I take Allegra and it works fine. Otherwise I have itchy throat, eyes, stuffy/runny nose and sinuses, and a lot of sneezing.

If you can't go to a doctor try getting Claritin or Claritin-D (stuffy sinuses/nose) over the counter. It doesn't make you sleepy like Benadryl.

I used to have horrible seasonal allergies, with the first year being the worst, but it seems that every year gets better.

Cats still kill me, though.

Who suffers from them and how do you cope? There's so much pollen where I go to school now I think I'm gonna die, and then when I went home my allergies somehow followed me there. :frown:

My doctor gave me a billion free samples of random kinds of allergy medicine and just said to try them. I drink some honey from Taiwan early in the mornings to calm my histamines down.

I suffer from allergies to the point of wanting to shoot my nose off. I think I'm allergic to everything except pidgeons. I usually take clarinex or anti-histamines.

did you guys ever hear about that theory that the reasons that we're suffering from allergies is that our world (in america) is so clean?

Clean? Not my house.

Allergies make it difficult to wear my contact lenses. They make my eyes light sensitive, I can barely keep them open when I'm outside. And my nose gets stuffy.

I produce a ton of mucus during spring time. Allergies aren't so bad, they usually only last during spring time for me.

I don't take any medications for my allergies. Just let things run their course.

Like our bodies are too weak to resist the air now or something? My doctor mentioned that it was weird so many people have allergies now.

more like our society is so clean now, our immune system never sees half of the pollen, dust, etc. to build a strong enough immune response, so we have allergies (which is like a weakened immune responde).

i tohught allergies was a hightened immune response? since we're not used to the outdoors anymore, and we get less exposure to pollen and dust and "nature" bascially, so we aren't used to it.

I have a seafood allergy, which is unfortunate as I love seafood.

My two last serious allergic reactions were both whilst I was on holiday ... and my will weakened to try some local dishes.

In '97 it resulted in being rushed to Ai Po hospital in HK, and last year I was wandering around in Zara in Barcelona after a lovely meal, when my ankles and hands suddenly swelled to the size of beach balls.

I have an allergy to nickel. I take Clarinex, Benadryl and rub this cream on any outbreaks. Otherwise, once in a while I get a little hay fever or dry eyes, but it doesn't last long and I'm not exactly sure what plant causes it.

On the long run, adding essential fatty acids to the diet will help reduce allergies.
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are metabolized by the human body into the prostaglandins ((anti)inflammation) and leukotrienes (immune system).

Flax seed oil and evening primrose oil are two recommended sources of EFAs, and so are fish such as salmon, tuna etc. Hemp seed oil is also a good source of EFAs. Other sources include organic nut butters, nuts, seeds.

http://goodfats.pamrotella.com/

Please note that cooking oil contains very little EFAs, even organic safflower oil.

For cooking extra virgin olive oil and grapeseed oil are recommended.

The best quality oil is extra virgin olive oil, mixed by hand with organic vinegar, on salads.

...

As for my allergies, I outgrew my reaction to them when I figured out that it's me working myself up over stuffed nose etc.

Personally I don't bother with allergy medicine, since after taking anti-histamines as a kid one summer, the side effects bummed me out.

Meditation and a change in diet (more fish, nuts and seeds = more EFAs) helps. If you have a severe reaction to nuts - no not the human kind  - then flaxseed and/or evening primrose seed oil capsules may be substituted.

Discounting the natural reaction to hot food (runny nose), I just relax and destress (meditation, rationalizing self talk, etc.).

If all else fails, then I reach for Bija Cold Stop, make a hot cup of tisane from it and breathe in the steam.

The decongestant ingredient is eucalyptus.

If you use oil of eucalyptus, it is safe only for external use only i.e. when a few drops are put in a humidifier or left to evaporate in an essential oil dish.
