I've heard about the Stow Lake legend a few times which is in Golden Gate in SF. Weirdness.

Man...the Winchester Mystery House -- the dumbest tourist trap ever devised. I feel ashamed that it's one of the chief attractions of my home area.
"And now we walk up these stairs...and open this door...to find...<pause>...a brick wall!" Whee.
Insofar as local ghost stories go, my favorite has always been the Sunnyvale Toys R Us (on El Camino) ghost that periodically knocks shit off of shelves.
But, in general, I hate reading ghost stories and don't like talking about them as they freak the shit out of me. After having made the mistake of watching Sixth Sense, I had problems walking around the house at night for like two months. There were times when I literally would hold off on taking a leak until morning because walking out to the bathroom was too scary a proposition.
Yeah, I know...I'm a wuss.

Palos Verdes - Glass Chapel - The city of Palos verdes is surrounded by hills and peaks. The city is somewhat eerie and lots of nearby cities go there for the views and the ghost stories. Glass Chapel is just one of the haunted venues. You must park a mile away walk to get there on a highway because the cops will pull over any car even near the vicinity. The chapel has trails which lead into the hills. The Chapel itself is scary and freaky looking. Funny things happen at the door of the chapel such as pagers and cell phones going crazy. Cars that are parked miles away have problems too such as the engine freezing, remember it is California and it isn't that cold here.
i've been there 2 times and some freaky shit happened both times. have you ever seen a black cat walk straight towards you with no fear?

Yea... the thing is a couple of ppl have actually said they've seen the thing at Stow Lake. I have yet the balls or the insanity to go see it though. I may talk big shit about scary movies, but if it's like REAL ghosts, I'd probably pee in my pants.

well, it's interesting b/c the house was built that way in case his creditors ever came after him, right?
Lafayette - Lafayette Park Hotel - Guests complain about a little girl calling for her mommy and jumps on the beds. Apparitions, Pictures fall of the walls vending machines dispense soda on their own, cold spots & doors slam.
well, gee, the hotel's right next to a cemetery.

The orthodox explanation, I believe, is that Sarah Winchester was told by a mystic that she needed to build continually, lest she fall prey to the curse that claimed the lives of her husband and two children (a curse brought on by all the deaths that her husband's rifle contributed to).
So the haphazardness of the floor plan is in large part due to the fact that the prime directive was constant construction. And then there is the idea that she built the house in a convoluted manner in order to confuse vengeful spirits that might come to haunt the house.
Nothing to do with creditors. I think she was fully solvent up to the time of her death, though she supposedly didn't leave much behind except for a silly tourist attraction.

I've been a few ghost hunts here in England and back in British Columbia. Our selections in BC were limited to say the least, but choices are more plentiful in the UK. The people in these "Hunts" usually scare themselves silly rather than have an entity do it for them. :D But on several occasions we ran into a few unexplained events and caught a few "things" on film.
No was has been chased by the dead...yet. :)
