View Full Version : Do you try to support bands with Asians?
Faithless

There are not too many of them out there. But I believe there is Hiroshima, which is primarily Asian, Linkin Park, which has Joe Hanh and Mike Shinoda, QBert the DJ. What else.

I try, but there aren't too many that I've really liked so far. I actually have to like what they do.

Same here. I gotta listen to what they sound like and their works. Last thing I want is to be supported solely based on my Asian background and not by the music I write and perform.

I guess I'm alone, here, then. I tolerate Hiroshima, which is wifie's fav, but I always encourage her to look-out for their stuff.

When you say "bands," are you including include hip hop artists? Because I think there are a fair number of really good underground Asian-American artists.

I think hip-hop artists are included. If they are, then I'd say that Cantonese rapper Jin who was on Freestyle Friday on 106& Park for like seven weeks was pretty damn good.
I remember one line went something like this:
"Yeah I'm Chinese, and soon you'll understand it/ that's why your little sister's eyes are slanted"
I thought it was pretty funny.
And as far as rock bands, etc. I think Mike Shinoda from LP is actually mixed white/japanese. Is that true?

Maybe instead of "bands" I should say musical artists and groups. Hip hop included, of which I only know QBert.

I know there are few AA turntableists out there. One is named Neil Armstrong (probably is stage name) and he belongs in a group called the fifth platoon. When I saw him, he had a "queue" type hair style. It was almost empowering to see that.
Jin tha MC. I've heard his freestyle is better than his written stuff. (Does that make sense?)
Mike Shinoda is indeed half white/half Japanese. His brother went to my college. B)
Mm. I tried going to a concert by Lyrics Born, but he never showed up so I left. But my friend tells me he's very good.
I've been looking around on other websites and here's what I found:

Couldn't quite get used to Indian pop. Not my taste I guess. :P
I like the sounds of Chinese/Korean/Japanese pop music. Haven't been too up to date. Just the stuff my friends pass down to me.
I'm all for Asians in the music industry. It's just that they'll be under the microscope more intensely since we're still pretty new when it comes to the US market. So that means whoever becomes the next Asian-American idol/band will have to have some awesome skills with tremendous market value. Thus the need for that person/group to be extremely good.

I have no idear.
I'm pulling this out of my ass. Maybe hip hop is one of the "cheaper" things to do?? Someone beat boxes and the other person comes up with some rhymes. You don't REALLY REALLY need instruments. You just need practice. In that sense, hip hop is easier to get into than, say, pop or rock where you need money to get instruments or vocal training and all of that. Just a thought.
Plus, from my experience, a lot of Asian Americans are into hiphop. So maybe they want to pursue their interest/love for it.

Hip-hop has gotten so big now that it's no longer just a "black thing" anymore, although that's certainly where it originated. Blacks, whites, hispanics, asians, etc. everybody seems to be into it now and has put their own spin on it.
As for whether it's easier or not, that's probably true to an extent. But freestylin ain't easy, you gotta have a creative mind and a large vocabulary, lots of rappers have to turn to the dictionary for inspiration ;)
But yes, compared to rock, where you have to buy instruments, spend months (well, more like years) building up a fan base, then trying to get a record deal, probably get rejected at least half a dozen times) before making it big (IF you make it big), hip-hop is a bit easier to get into. But I suppose it helps a LOT to just know the right people, and not neccessarily have talent. How else could a talentless SOB like Ja Rule get to the top? ;)

self confessed white music whore here.
first for some reason i only listen to common oldies, so that pretty much eliminates all contemporary music, and i don't think there were big asian american bands before the 90s.
second i like music w/ lyrics that i understand, and since i suck at everything besides english, that takes out basically all asian pop.

Hip hop definitely is big, and I think it will only continue to grow.

That's why they gotta practice! (Man, I hate practicing anything but I'm usually pleased with the outcome.)

If it sounds good, I think I'd go more out of my way to support bands with Asians, although I think more of my money is going toward Asian musicians in Asia than ones here.
There's that boy band group at there At Last whose floudering but they're not bad singers in my opinion so I buy their CDs, but I wouldn't if they weren't Asian. I buy Linkin Parks CDs, but I just like their music, and I would anyway even if Mike Shinoda and Joseph Hahn were replaced with white guys.

Heh heh I didn't answer the original question either I don't think. Well, like most people here I wouldn't support an asian band/artist for the sake of supporting an asian band/artist- I'm not that political.

At Tower Records - Stonestown, I saw Vienna Teng accompany herself on a kybd.
At AAScon at the Cathedral Hill Hotel, I saw a panel on Filipino mobile dj crews. (It all started with a bunch of guys at Balboa hs in '78...)

i have heard of both, but i like Dan the Automator better, at least from what i've heard...I first heard of him when he did Gorillaz, and then i backtracked through his stuff from there.
Also, DJ Honda. and a newish guy, Lyrics Born (aka T. Shimura)! I just bought his CD. He's a bay area guy too.
in the rock arena, The Von Bondies has an asian drummer (Don Blum), and Switchfoot looks like they have an asian guy on guitar.
To answer the question, the fact that these bands have asian members makes me take more notice of them. so maybe i'll notice that they are good, and i won't accidentally pass them up. but if they suck then i won't listen or support them just cuz they're asian. i just happen to like the aforementioned bands and MCs. :) plus i like Linkin Park. and Chad Hugo from the Neptunes.

Here's Karen Han (http://www.karenhan.com/index.html).
http://www.karenhan.com/Karen01a.jpeg
Very talented. She plays the er hu. But if you don't like this sort of music, you'd probably not be apt to support it. Although, she has made an attempt to sort of modernize it.
By the way, she appeared on the Passion of Christ movie soundtrack.

That's fine. That's probably all these groups could ask for --
Give 'em a try,
And if they sound good,
Give 'em a buy.
With the advent of Napster and iTunes, although they're incomplete in terms of what they offer, at least you're not stuck buying whole CD's, when you really just like a few songs.
Makes it easier to get music from Asian artists. Done that recentl with Jin, Lyrics Born, and the Mountain Brothers stuff.

Chotto, I was also a big Hiroshima head from way back in high school, actually...
My fave tune was "Why Can't I Love You." I threw that on an "I love you" mix tape for my then girlfriend...
Yellow Planet is a tight techno artist. I've been a Blonde Redhead fan for a bit...getting into Dengue Fever now; they're pretty funky...I don't know why Cibo Matto doesn't get back together, cuz they were the joint way back when, and I love Miho Hattori's voice, but she hasn't hooked up with anyone who does her justice, really, except for that one track on that Baldwin Brothers disc.
If you read Giant Robot mag, they're always giving out shouts to Asian bands and bands with Asian members, usually of quality, but since they're West Coast based, some of the local discs can be hard to get out here...

Speaking of Hiroshima.
We went to a concert in Oakland, CA where Hiroshima was performing at a benefit concert for the Asian Health Services (http://www.ahschc.org/).
Anyway, I could have swarn that they were saying that legendary song writer Terry Steele would be leaving the band to pursue interests in Los Angeles as some sort of host.
Haven't been able to confirm with an article. :frown:
Of all the singers, Terry definitely gave the band a great voice.
