Most of us have heard "Go Back to China!" at some point in time. Looks like I am. I'll find out for sure in two weeks. Have any of you thought about doing a stint in Asia? Or have you already? Share your plans or experience.

Actually I got 'We don't need any more Koreans here. Watashi wa konnichiwa coochie...' Depends on what number I pull out of the hat I guess.
The only part of Asia I've ever been to is Hong Kong (technically not China at the time) and I used the bathrooms at the Tokyo airport once on a layover. I was planning on travelling to China to further my study of the Chinese language (esp. writing) and visiting my friends in Seoul but turns out that I'm taking summer school so I'll hafta wait til I graduate.

I am a native of Beijing...
Been living here in the US for a while now...went back a couple years ago to Beijing for a couple of months and it has changed TREMENDOUSLY...
My friends back in Beijing tell me that it is even more metropolitan than it was when I was last there...partly in preparation of the Olympics....
I am so :gross: of assumptions made about the public bathrooms in China...I have seen maybe like two squating-type bathrooms when I was last there and have used maybe like ONE...The mall there is ten times better than what you will find here in the States...and the streets are 100 times cleaner than the likes of Chicago...Newyork...
The food there is awesome...it is the home of "Beijing Duck" and my favorite Bejinger Hotpot...
Places to go...I recommend "Yi Heyuan" also known as the Summer palace...it is some scenery unfound anywhere else...
Beijing is like paradise full of hot guys and hot women...
There..you will find girls much like GongLi...Zhangziyi and myself...while guys all look like Beijinger versions of Rick Yune and Leon Lai...
Man I miss home...

Yea but what about like the outskirts and also esp. western portion of China that's made up of like giant farms and poverty (i.e. the vast majority of China's population).

i will go back to HK to live, or to Shanghai or Beijing.
too many more years here in the US and i will surely go insane.
about public bathrooms. they are bad when you leave the major metropolitan areas.

Hi...
:D
I think you would like HK more than BJ or SH...
Beijing...Shanghai...while being greats places to visit and stay temporarily...are not great places to reside...
For individuals like me who thinks too much and likes to ocasionally bash the government...that place can be sufficating...
Staying there too long will drive you insane faster than the US... <_<
Think less pay...lower housing conditions....
Something else that ABCs are less aware about is that the Chinese society is extremely complex...by this I am talking about social human intereactions...
People can be extremely sly...selfish...and there is no concept of "community"...
A more or less "step on other people to get higher" type society...
I do not possess these characteristic so these vulnerabilities wins my disparage faster than other any flaws...
I am sounding contradictory to my last post full of Bejing pride...but this objectiveness about the flaws of my home is only an extension of it...haha...

True...but irrelevent...
Nobody is denying the regional polarization in China...
In fact...this is why I was not cheering amongst the crowd when Beijing was announced host of the Olympics...more emphasis on a city that is already excessively polished will only further increase the regional disparity in China...
while providing another oppertunity for corrupt individuals to take advantage of an backwards system...
Thats a whole another 5 pages though if I start on that...but my primary post was to say that China is not as primitive as it is commonly though...and it has progressed an enormous amount...

oh i'm not ABC. i was originally from HK, and i just got back from HK about 10 months ago from working there for about 2 years. i consider it home. how you described beijing and shanghai, that's not unlike how it is in HK. except maybe for the part about complaining about the government. people can complain, but most everybody else don't give a shit. the reason i want to try beijing or shanghai is because 1) i want to exprience living there, and 2) i want to take advantage of the economic opportunities there, and possibly start a business there. HK will always be my home city, but the economy there is so bad right now and i don't see it going back up anytime soon. it's just going to keep going down with the integration with the mainland. if i go back there, it would be pretty difficult to "move up" in career/business. if i work for somebody else in beijing or shanghai though, it would have to be with a multinational, so the pay would be relatively good. and i can probably get used to lower housing conditions. my apartment in HK was horrid. the bedroom was the length of my bed and the hot water was known to dissappear in the winter.

hey, many people do not understand it, but sometimes the ones who complain the most about a place has the most love and pride for the place. think Lu Xun.

HH not you too. j/k.
my folks love it in shanghai. only problem is that they complain about the food. they tend to put more oil in the food because it tastes better and it's bad for their blood pressure. other than that, living in a penthouse in the center of shanghai, their own driver, my dad is united with his brothers again, old friends that moved to shanghai from HK and taiwan etc etc. they're living it up over there. not a bad retirement considering they struggled when we first came to the US.
edit: oh they also told me there is a noticeable hierarchy and slight resentment there between the native people of shanghai and the people that moved to shanghai. my dad is kinda peeved about the whole thing. he said it's slightly annoying.

does that just apply to people from the countryside, or does it extend to people from HK, Taiwan, and westerners, and even people in other cities in mainland?

Yeah, that's what my FIL said. If you use Mandarin or basically anything else that isn't Shanghainese, you get screwed.

all of it i guess, didn't really discuss it with them over the phone. but mostly my dad has encountered it with my mom and his brothers when they're out. since they're not originally from shanghai or have never lived there previously.
my dad told me he noticed two things:
1)native shanghai people will come up to him and speak in shagnhainese. my dad and his brother don't speak shaghainese. so they get dirty looks. like they know right away when they say xie xie ni instead of xiau nou. my uncle says native shanghai people are very cohesive and resent the recent influx of outsiders coming in to cash in.
2)in order to get the prime jobs you have to be a native shanghainese. if you're not you can get it by marrying a native shanghainese. my dad and uncle told me that there are a lot of single moms there. they move to shanghai from the other regions of china. marry a native shanghai man for a fee. shanghai man parties like a rock star while wifey works. man moves on to next woman and leaves the old one.
number 2 doesn't really affect my uncle since his newspaper company has a branch there.
there's a funny story:
when my uncle moved to shanghai he bought 3 penthouses in an apartment complex. he needed to furnish it. so he went around. he doesn't dress like an executive. he's a messy dresser. so when he went to the first store he asked for someone to come and give him an estimate. they blew him off. he went to the second store. the woman came to all three places and gave him an estimate. the cost was about 50,000 r.m.b. he said fine. since the woman works on commission she gets 10%. she basically hit payload and kinda latched on to him and my dad. she has a daughter. when asked where's the father. she said he ran off. when they were introduced to her friends they all had children with no father. all the fathers ran off.
