I see alot on AIM profiles and blogs words like "oppah" and "dongseng"
what does that mean?
any other koreanisms you can think of?

Oppah = older brother, if you are a girl.
Dongsaeng = younger sibling
These can transcend blood, and if you have a really close older male friend and you happen to be a girl, then you can call him oppa.
oppa = girl's older bro
hyung = boy's older bro
unnie = girl's older sis
nuna = boy's older sis
tongsaeng = any sibling or close friend younger than you.
So you see, it depends on the gender of both the sayer and the recipient to decide what to cal you.

is there a standard romanisation of the korean language? i seem to see different spellings all the time. and in one dictionary, i saw "obba" instead of "oppa".

i'm no expert, but not really. a lot of them are like t/d, b/p, ch/j, but also it depends on the postioning of the characters. like r is the same character as l, but depending on where it is in the syllable section (top or bottom) changes it.
sarang means love, that's fairly common.

that's not cuz Korean language is uniquely unsuited to romanization, it was cuz their romanization sucked and reflected only how people spell, not how people actually speak. basically in korean spelling, the same consonants gets a different pronunciation at the beginning of a word as opposed to in the middle of the word. if you try to romanize a word based on its spelling, you won't reflect the actual pronunciation. i believe this was the source of the whole problem with pusan vs busan.

Actually there is a standardized romanization prescribed by the South Korean government for names of people and places. It is not mandatory that anyone follow it tho.
Pusan is now Busan.

Damn, I hope they had come up with this back in the 70's. Cuz the way my name got spelled isn't very korean, so by default once again, peple assume it's chinese
