i was a major nerd during my last two years in college. some of the people i was closest to were my professors. i made it a point to get to know some of them. read articles about them and then visit them during all of their office hours with questions - often questions that tended to poke holes in their theories, that made them rethink their positions. if i really liked the professor, i would search on-line for debates that they have been in, for criticisms of their work. i would then attend their office hours armed with arguments to counter those criticisms.
it all worked. many of those professors became my friends. i t.a.'d for them, worked on their research projects outside of the university, even published an article about recidivism with one of them. and i didn't consider it "sucking-up" so much because i actually liked and respected each professor i approached.
it can be very beneficial to get to know your professors. it can definitely give you a boost in your grade for that class. you may even get great letters of recommendation. the professor may say kind things about you behind your back to other professors - professors that you may have in the future. and you may even get more than just academic advice. most professors are there because they want to teach individuals to make them contributing members of society.
so how well do you know your professors?

oh i'm a TOTAL ass kisser. i give my teachers
presents and cards during the holidays and at
the end of the year man.
i'm lazy as hell, and if it means i need to kiss
ass to continue to being lazy, i'm down for it.
i just hate those kids that kiss ass better than
i do.
...you buy your education one way or another.
it's not like you're going to school for free. be
it public or private. just who's paying more and
who's not.
there's nothing wrong with giving teacher's
presents. i'm a teacher now as i'm working
on another degree. and whatever gift a
kid gives me, i say thanks, i'm not moronic
enough to give him/her an 'A' cuz of some
box of cookies or pointless adolescent
chatter. and if you think your teachers are
doing that then it's your teacher that you
should be hating and reporting to
school officials.
i used to be a total ass kisser, kids that got all
hissy with me were just frikkin paranoid,
even when i was finishing up my masters
degree i still did it. and did it pay off yah?
i got a grant because of kickass
recommendations. and you'll realize too
that if you're not not gonna kiss ass. then
oh! you can stay in that cubicle while other
people are getting offices =)

i'm pretty close with my current professor...
i'm a ta for her... when it comes to her studio fibers art class..
she's given me various contacts of various artists for me to get in touch with... for networking support...
also, i just got introduced to a professor at my school...
and i'm gonna be helping her do some research when it comes to her studies about asians and adoptees... and so forth...
so like yeah, i like to keep good ties with the professors at my school.. in whom caters to my interests... and whom are beneficial for me when it comes to my advancement...

wow..i always hated kissin ass...not my thing...but the closer i get to graduation, i think it just might be benificial...i kinda wanna go to grad school and maybe they can hook me up somehow...
i've only been somwehat close with professors i've had in really tiny classes, like my animation course last spring which was about 8 people.
i want to get to know my professors better (especially for recommendation letters and stuff) but i never know what i'm supposed to do. i wouldn't have anything to say if i went to office hours, you know?

I have a PhD in kissing ass. Tongue all up in the rectum and everything. I can't remember how many of my grades were brought up b/c of the undeserved slack that I was given.

well...
i think if the professor interests you...
just go and visit them during their office hours and just introduce yourself to them... thats what their office hours are there for... to get to know their students better..
thats what i did with the lastest professor i got to meet... and she's not even a personal professor of mine... but someone in whom i found out about at the ecasu event... and now i'm gonna be assisting her with some research she's doing outside of the university...
maybe it would be helpful to go in with some questions or concerns that you have... like your personal concerns about your career path.. your graduation and so forth... or whateverz... and they maybe able to help point you in the right direction... that kinda like a start when building a personal rapport with them...

In 4 years of college, I never visited a single professor 1 time.
So far nothing in law school either. I'm missing out, I know...but I'm just not...like that I guess...

i only kiss ass to my departmental advisor (who has never taught me in any of my classes and isn't my thesis advisor) and two of my japanese profs (and I got Bs in both their classes anyway). Actually in every class where I have ever attended a prof's office hours or other outside academic activites, I didn't get an A. Actually I've got my highest marks in classes which I don't attend regularly or even at all and probably wouldn't recognize the prof on the street.
but i am going to a lecture on a saturday morning (i.e. in about five and a half hours) in order to kiss ass to my ethnic studies prof. but I think she already doesn't like me anyway and it's too late.

I don't kiss ass. I don't know why, but I care not to visit my teacher. You'd think class was enough...
But ocassionally I will go to office hours. Usuallly upon the teacher's request. <_<

Nothing wrong with kissing ass.
If it means a higher grade......so be it......
Your career depends on it

i should so i could get good recs for grad school. but i hate it because i'd rather get my grades through merit rather than brown-nosing.

Kiss ass to professors that I have disparage for....
Probably not, unless they bend over.
I like most of my professors though, which is good because I am so not a sucking up type of person. <_<

i have no need to kiss asses...cause my major now is so small, everyone is really close...
i know my prof's wives name..their kids names and ages..b days...ect... and been to one of the prof's house... i love my major :D
...my seniors class as a whole gets away with a lot..we frequently show up late, miss classes ( we all missed the last meeting of one of our classes..oops) but...somehow we get away w/ all that..
the junior class, which is three times bigger than the senior class..doesnt seem to have the same type of the bond the seniors have ...ah well, they are missing out a lot.

i'm too antisocial to kiss ass... that plus the office hours were usually a huge line out the door and most of the students didn't even get to the front of the line before the hour was up... freaking 500 people classes filled with overachievers....
but definitely more power to those who can get their professors to know who they are :). of course, when a student starts to attempt one-on-one conversation with a prof in the middle of a 500 person lecture as if its some private tutoring session, then i start wanting to give the evil eye....
