so the local news has recently reported viet organized crime as the major source of bc bud.

They also stated that viet. americans are coming here as well to grow.

I think this breeds more s.types and is bad for asian people as a whole.

however I've heard of chinese, russians, italians getting bad raps for organized crime as well.

Is this another case of media ignorance to minorities?

should they be alowed to disclose the ethnicities of groups of ppl who engage in criminal activities?

as long as they aren't american citizens, then i don't see anything wrong with it......if they are actually chinese, or etc and not an american citizen, i think then that it is factual to report it in that manner.....in fact, i think the media has done a good job of not placing ethnicities with gangs...like that gang fight between the asian fraternities in california? it was reported here as just a fraternity fight...they didnt mention it was asian or etc....and i think also with the columbia tragedy, they didnt say indian astronaut, but american astronaut....and i just noticed you said BC and you are from vancouver, so i dont know about canadian media, but i know here, especially in the south, they are pretty pc about just saying, a man was arrested....instead of saying a chinese man, or a black man....

there are so many cultures here in vancouver...

they just say these things i guess w/ no feeling that they are doing anything wrong.

i've noticed that they have reported Indo-Canadian org. crime as well.

i'm not sure that what they are doing is wrong but I just feel that it adds to the image that minorities are criminals.

see thing is, i dont hear a whole lot about organized crime in general. I mean you'd figure from the news that the russian mafia and the chinese and the so and so dont even exist

s'probly cuz they dont wanna "offend" such groups

I think it's okay for them to disclose ethnicity.

I dunno... on the one hand it furthers stereotypes, but on the other hand, it is one of the easiest distinguishing characteristics of a wanted criminal. If he's a fugitive, than I think so... otherwise I think it's irrelevant.

what value is there in disclosing ethnicity? esp. if citizenship were not a factor (i.e., the criminal is a US/Canadian citizen)?

for a criminal or group of criminals still at large, there's obvious value in reporting as much information as possible.

perhaps for characteristics of the criminal(s) that are unalterable (like race), but otherwise, that's not true for all cases
for example, in the case of the DC area sniper, they were limiting the amount of information they give to the public, because the sniper was using that information to hide himself
