View Full Version : Are your parents proud of you?

I dont think my parents are yet.
Even though I've sold to nine fortune 500 companies I'm not a Doctor
Even though I am doing well in comedy I'm don't have a PHD
Even though I am incredibly handsome and straight I didn't go to an Ivy League school.
Even though I have been on the radio on WBAI I am not doing well as the children of their friends
Even though etc., etc. etc. etc.
I probably could become president of the US and that isn't as good as being a doctor.

um...she tried to kill me, but i'm not dead? does that count?
Mine are the same way, I've accomplished several things that I, myself, am proud of but things that are also commendable no matter who you are. But mine, well mine aren't proud. They feel I should be something else, something in engineering, or yes, a doctor.
You can never please.

maybe because most of the traits you named are self-proclaimed. i mean, the idea that you think you're doing well in comedy doesn't mean that they think you are. the idea that you think you're incredibly handsome may be purely subjective and not shared by anyone else in this world. sorry so blunt. just an observation.
my parents send my cards via bluemountain.com to tell me they're proud.
but you know, here's a question. before asking whether our parents are proud of us, do we ever ask if we're proud of them?

Before I left for school, I told my parents that i'd make them proud....even tho I feel like I'm failing...but then my mom told me that I didn't hafta worry about going out of my way and that they were already proud of me no matter what *sniff* Kodak moment.

I'm not proud of my parents except for them having sex and having me.
and also coming to America.
But that's about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My mom still does not know how to use a phone after 27 years here. She still only watches Korean soap operas.
They own a dry cleaners. If they owned something I wish it was something cool like a Strip Joint.

Yea, my mom will be more of a woman than I will ever be.....er....person, anyways, you get what I mean. My parents are incredibly strong and worthy of respect, I wish I was half the man my dad was.

I'm old enough for the role reversal of responsibilities to occur. I actually take care of most of my family, blood relative or in-law. I guess they're proud but when I think of it I think in terms of needing to be strong enough to provide support to everyone.

i know they are proud of me, but i've never actually heard them say it to me...i dont know if its an asian thing or not, but once my dad did say...."i've never said all these nice things like congrats and good job because it's not my way....when you do bad, i'll tell you...when you do good, i'll leave you alone..." and im sure they are proud because i've never had to use my college fund due to scholarships and going to state schools....they bought a new car after i graduated from HS and from college.... :D

Uhh...my parents are proud of my community service work, but they're downright shamed by my grades. In fact...they had to downsize their expectations....TWICE! It used to be like; Tony, just get a B and we'll be happy -to- Just pass and we'll be happy...
As for me, I am proud of my parents. Especially my dad, since he brought me here and went from shared apartment in hicktown to suburbs in Houston. He's so great...compared to him I am but a mere fry... :(

My parents are proud of my brother and I, but words can't describe how proud of them I am. I've never seen such hardworking, sacrificing people in my life. I hope one day I can be half the man my father is.
I have to admit though growing up with a Thai family, I wasn't sure they were proud of me until recently. They (and I have a feeling many asian families) have a habit of always comparing me to my peers and cousins. "we'll so and so got accepted to Yale, and so and so is getting married...to a Thai girl, and so and so is making $100,000 a year, blah, blah, blah" But that's just how they are, they're proud of the men my brother and I have grown up to be, and I have them to thank for it.

Hell yeah, I'm proud of my parents.
My father came here from HK in 74' with my mom and two of my sisters, and not more than $2000. He's learned how to make his money work for him and is now reaping the benefits of unearned income. My mother raised 4 kids while working full-time and somehow still found the energy to cook dinner, tutor us in coursework, and go to aerobics. They're both retired now; travelling, relaxing, seeing the world. They're still together and they are the two happiest people I know.
They kick ass.

they're proud of me only when I'm away from home. When I'm at home I hear stuff like;
"Son, you're gonna burn in hell for not going to church"
"Son, I just hope you didn't do anything funny with that girl at church cuz you're gonna burn in hell."

I'm not as Thai as my mom would like me to be. I don't own my own business and make a great deal of money like her brothers do. I don't work for the government like her dad did. I told her that I can't have a Thai mier because they are too bossy, so she's afraid she'll never have Thai grandchildren.
I didn't join the military like my dad wanted me to. I work in a business my dad pretty much despises. I don't identify much with his ethnicity, religion or where he came from.
So to answer the question: No.

Hell no my parents ain't proud of me. I sit and listen all the time to how my dad wants me to go to college and wants me to pick a career, etc. I'm kinda like whatever, he oughta be used to dissappointment from me by now.
I'm not good at anything, so that doesn't help. I'm feeling really stuck right now.

LOL every asian comic I've ever seen on TV always makes a joke about how their traditional, old-school asian parents hate the fact that they went on to do comedy as opposed to medical school or something like that. It's always funny to me, cause it's probably true.

 That sounds exactly like my parents...
"You're going to go to hell since you're not going to church"
"You're not supposed to do anything funny (although their definition of "funny" is holding hands and worse) with any boy.. not until you get married, which will happen when the minister decides you're ready and helps you chose your mate... (i guess then i can hold hands with a guy )"
my friends tell me that my parents brag about me all the time to their parents (i'm an engineer, make decent money)... but then they yell at me when they see me (i don't have a phd, i'm not a "real" engineer, not making more money, live far from home, not going to church, not going to church, not going to church, not going to church)...
i'm not too sure "proud" is something i feel when i think of my parents, but i definitely love 'em... as crazy and irrational (especially about religion) as i think they are... that i'm driven too crazy whenever my dad says "any asian who thinks affirmative action is beneficial is just lazy"... or when he says "any asian who's involved in asian american awareness just has a chip on their shoulder"... or the "there is no racism or discrimination in the workplace. if you didn't get promoted, it you're own fault"... to start thinking about being "proud" of him... i'm just trying to not make faces at him....

Wow! that's how my parents are also!
They brag about me graduating from a US college and getting a BA in computer science and economics, but when people see me, I'm still jobless and I had to crash at home cuz I had no money.
I also think that if I stay at home any longer, my parents will arrange my marriage with the most saint, innocent, and naive girl at church.

Parents will never express ENOUGH how much they are dissapointed in you.
But yea, my parents are somewhat pleased and upset with me. Upset, because well... I'm not really education-orientated. But they proud of my character and how I carry myself. In a way, I'm not really typical, but I will listen to my parents, and I won't back down from most things. (Though I should...)
But yea, they're parents, and if you have high expectations of you, it's because they think highly of you. I used to be really upset with them, mentioning this and that, but I know that they see potential in me that sometimes I don't realize. I'm just glad I set them straight about my goals in life. I'm not here to do things their way, and after... oh.... 15 years of bitching to them, they finally got it. (i'm 21 btw)
But they'll never stop mentioning how much they want me to be a doctor or lawyer. <_<

KH: Freedom of speech applies to GOVERNMENT relations w/ individuals. It's perfectly legal and I would say moral to impose speech rules on a private community, which is what YW is after all. When you're here, you're here as a guest. If people don't like a guest, it's best for him to keep quiet or leave. If you were in someone'e home and people told you to shut up or hinted that you talked too much, would you give them the free country line?
Also your posts are not completely "free." they take up bandwidth or disk space or whatever. So you can't claim your posting activity involves no cost to anyone. :)
