"About 70 percent of Asian-American households are online, compared to 48 percent of Hispanic households, 45 percent of Caucasian households, and 35 percent of African-American households" - according to a recent report by Insight Research (http://htmlgear.tripod.com/text/control.text?u=politicalcircus&i=1&a=render&style=list).

i've noticed it. my parents and many of their friends all have broadband at home. but of the white families that i know, only 1 has it. when i first got broadband in mobile, i had nearly T1 access speeds b/c only about 8000 ppl in a city of 300,000 had it (city w/ few asians). i'll bet a good chunk of that 8000 was students too.

i think its more odd that there are a higher percentage of hispanic homes online than white homes....
I think it's a combination of factors, esp. regarding the Hispanic tally. Minorities tend to live in urban and suburban areas, which generally have better availability of online access. Modem-based ISPs could very well be a toll call for many rural Americans, and broadband is even scarcer. Of course, the other factor is general affluence, as online access is paid with disposable income for many, although I'm sure some people consider it a neccessity. =) Another factor I imagine may have a slight impact is the sense of community the internet offers, and that minority diasporas may see a larger need for this connection than caucasians who do not need as much racial bonding considering there are white people everywhere.

Well, whites live everywhere in the country, while minorities tend to live in cities, therefore i think that net-connectivity is relative to urbanization. Those in the most inner parts of the city (i.e. poor people) are not going to have internet connections, however, those who live in the burbs and rich areas of town will. I think Asians for the most part live mostly in the burbs and the rich areas. All the urban whites that are connected are equalized by all the rural whites, who are less likely to be connected. This is why hispanics, 15%of the US population, mostly living in cities, are percentage wise more connected than white people are.

Another study...
Article: Asian Americans Online
Among the findings in a new report from the Pew Internet Project called "Asian-Americans and the Web: The Young and the Connected," is the fact that Asian-Americans who speak English are more experienced and active Internet users than whites, African-Americans, or Hispanics. The study shows that about three-quarters of Asian-American adults have gone online, a significantly greater rate than the 58% of white adults, the 50% of Hispanic adults, and the 43% of African-American adults who have done so.
- 70% of Asian-American Internet users are online on a typical day. This is much higher than any other English speaking ethnic or racial group.
- About half of Asian-American users have been online for more than three years; 80% have been using the Web for two or more years
- Asian-American Internet users are more likely to have a college degree and a higher income.
- 63% of the Asian-American Internet population them are between the ages of 18 and 34.
- 34% get the day's news online
- 20% seek financial information on a typical day
- 19% look for political news and information on a daily basis. These rates are all higher than their peers.
Tom Spooner, the principal author of the report, says "Clearly, Asian-Americans have enthusiastically brought the Internet deeply into their daily lives..."
