Me personally, nothing big really, just in Taiwan when people assume my family's not living in Taiwan they give us the "inflation" on price of goods

I hope i used inflation in the right context, cuz economics isnt my thing really

Uh... do you want to hear experiences from mixed Asians or do we count? I'm not going to be offended if you say no because I think you're asking about discrimination based on nationality not on ethnicity.

Taiwanese merchants jack up the price for anyone who doesn't speak Fukkienese. Damn bastards.

hmm..i never really got discriminated that much in korea, but i heard that i got ripped off on some things i bought, but i think that's common for all foreigners. otherwise, i didn't get anything that negative from people, except for some remarks about my weight (from strangers, no less!)

I don't think I can remember a time (as in single time or incident) where I was discriminated against, but I remember some of my relatives and family friends in HK constantly referring to me and my brother as looking like a couple 'gwai jai' in a slightly condescending way probably b/c of our style of dress or whatever. People can just tell if you're a foreigner...my Filipino friend tried to fit in when he went back to visit his hometown and no matter what he did somehow it just didn't work.

Those professional tissue passer outers didn't try to give me tissues. :(

AliBabaIncorporated
01-28-2003, 09:01 PM
ya gotta have no shame. go right up to them and ask for some tissues. stand in front of them and block their path until you get some.

I got a lot more tissues on my recent trip to Japan than I did when I actually studied there. kinda weird. Maybe cuz I spent the whole time dressed like a businessman, wearing an overcoat and everything. Whereas when I studied, I dressed, well, like a foreign student.

not really, but i've only been to hong kong and china. oh, but in china, the hotel manager at some night club did discriminate against our tour guide, who was a native of china. he said that it was hotel policy to exclude natives. this one really cool dude in our group, from hong kong, put his arm around our guide and said to the manager in really crappy mandarin, "she's my wife. she's coming in with me." it was very sweet of him b/c he was one of those cool guys and the tour guide was kinda dorky.

i was the stupid american girl - not knowing Thai cultures and wandering around the temples with short shorts and a tank top, until one of the head nuns asked me to . . . . put on some more clothes . . .

(i didn't understand it when i first got there - so i felt pretty bad getting kicked out of a temple!)

When me and my family went, they had longsleeve shirts and pants (long skirts for the women) that they passed out at the entrance. The clothes were all polyester monstrosities from the 1970's... Which wouldn't be so bad if not for the fact that polyester can melt onto your skin if it's hot out.

On the subject of tissues in Japan, i was on a tour as well and they passed em out to us no problem, that is until we started returning...with disguises

The disguises is a joke, but yeah they stopped letting us freeload

Yeah, I looked foreign when I was in HK... I just dress and look too good for a 17 year-old student. Many 17 yeaar-olds there are still in geek mode. SAme thing for the girls... all the girls my age look geeky but the ones in their twenties look pretty good. Maybe it's my okay cantonese and the way I blast rap in a car, but no one is going to think I live there.

Heck yeah for the states, too. But actually... to tell you the truth, during my 18 years in the states... I've been discriminated probably an equal number of times as I did in my 2 months overseas. Total. I think that has to do with the fact that when I'm overseas, I am so SO blatantly a foreigner, whereas out here in the states.... I'm not a foreigner. Especially since I grew up in Irvine and live in Los Angeles.

But I really don't care. A majority of it had more to do with my clothes and demeanor than my looks or ethnicity or nationality and stuff.

probably. but depends on your bartering skills. always shop around. don't buy something the first time you see it. chances are you'll see it at another place down the streets. and even if you've found the cheapest place that sells the item, pretend it's too expensive and you're not going to buy it.

well, you could always pretend you're a deaf-mute or something ... flash your fingers at them a lot. but you'd have to do the gestures chinese-style.

Especially if your in osaka, bartering is good idea cuz likely you'll see something somewhere else (souvenir wise)

BeTheReds
02-02-2003, 07:00 PM
Chances are, if you are going to buy a souvenier in Japan that even bartering will get you nowhere. You'll be given cheap crap made in china by 3 year olds anyway.

Souvenier shops are for stupid people who collect spoons showing all the places they have been.

You can usually tell by fashion, hairstyle, and fatness. Especially in Japan. Fashion here is whack!

Interestingly enough, the distinctions are so clear that when I visited Cali, some kids guessed that I was from the South.

The south? Were you missing some teeth or something?

I always figured to fit in with the japanese all you gotta do is spike your hair, grow a fu manchu and bleech your hair. Im sure they'd still spot you a mile away

augh.
it's impossible to get a good price from street vendors, in korea.
they can spot a korean american right away.
my mom forbade us to speak english in public.

and yes. i've heard remarks about my weight and height
while i was in korea.
the things they would say to strangers.!
it baffles my mind.

I like to get good prices from street vendors by blackmailing them.

One time there was this vendor and his wife selling stuff to foreigners. One of them said in Korean to the other!

Hey it's a foreign girl! Sell her this one!

Oh, how much is it?

It's really 5000, but we can get 20000 from her, she looks like a tourist!

So they proceded to sell her the thing for 20000.

And I walked up to them and picked out what I wanted... then they gave me the price and I gave them 1/4th of what they asked for..... and I smiled and said... I'm not exactly foreign.

You gotta be slick about it.

I have I've been protested and demonstrated against
Picket signs for my wicked rhymes look at the times
Sick as the mind of the motherfuckin' kid that's behind
All this commotion emotions run deep as oceans explodin
Tempers flarin from parents, just blow 'em off and keep goin
Not takin nothin from noone give 'em hell long as I'm breathin
Keep kickin ass in the mornin and takin names in the evenin
Leave 'em with a taste as sour as vinegar in they mouth
