View Full Version : The beauty of Wine

I've always heard that a novice begins with a blush like a white zifandel, then moves to crisp, cold whites, before graduating to those luscious full-bodied reds. I can attest to that path myself. I've tried many from tangy chardonnays to heavy merlots, but I've settled on an old favorite: Chianti. With it's mellow taste that rolls in my mouth and sticks on my tongue, it's my wine of choice. What's yours?

I'm pretty partial to white merlot.

I love rieslings. But I am also a fan of Chardonnay. Most red I can tolerate but not much. Too much tanine for my blood.

i go for a bordeaux when i'm eating a bloody steak.
a burgundy with lamb or a tuna steak.
as cliche as it is; champagne with oysters or for breakfast.
rioja when i'm going vegetarian or having tapas for a light snack.
and chianti when i'm poor an eating diced tomatoes or pizza.

I dig a nice Pinot Noir, with a slight spiciness, full bodied flavor. Goes well with prime rib, or monday night wings. :D

chianti? i don't drink much wine, but it's a romantic beverage, right? or certain types of wine, which one's are romantic?....er, and relatively inexpensive..... and taste good....... and will get you tipsy quickly.

I dunno I haven't had much alcohol in my short lil lifetime
but then of course I'm a bit underage
I've tried red and white Merlot
some Cognac
maybe Zifandel
Sake (or some really really strong rice wine)
and Absinth

working my way on the wine table but I'm hopping and skipping around heh

Like all wines, the quality of chianti is determined by the vineyard and country. Italian chianti and those coming from France are always good but rather expensive. Those from Australia are cheaper but just as smooth.

I would choose Chianti for a novice to reds because it's not so dry and bitter, yet it doesn't have the overwhelming fruits like a good Merlot has. New red wine drinkers are sometimes put off by the warmness of room temperature or the dryness of flavour, but with chianti, you won't have to worry about that. It has a smooth flavour that leave a nice aftertaste of warmth and subtle fruit instead of bitters.

For a romantic evening, I like a red because the tanin in it creates a sense of warmth and intimacy and as you requested, will get you tipsy faster. The chilliness of whites is better for a light meal or daytime indulgence. But it's up to you and your girl's preference. Some people never move beyond whites. In that case, go with a nice riesling or German white. Easy to handle and nice flavour.

If you're unsure about which label or kind of wine to buy, a good trick is to call up the best restaurant in your city and ask them for the label of their house wine. They'll have at least four: two reds, a white, and a blush. According to your preference, inquire about your favorite type and they'll happily provide you with the name. Four star restaurants have competent maitre'ds whose knowledge of wine will make sure that the house wine is satisfactory for most taste, thus you can please even the most discriminanting palate. Bonus is that the house wine label will be relatively inexpensive too.

Chianti is also my favorite... Clos du Val is a good cabernet (I think it's a cabernet), Navarro makes a good Pinot Noir and Sebastiani is another good Pinot... don't really like white wines... the wines I mentioned are pretty cheap (as far as wines go), but you probably won't find them at the supermarket. the wine house in west los angeles is usually where I go for my wines... yummy.

I really like sake. There are some awesome sake bars around. I love Lo's in St. Louis and the one in New Haven around Yale U. (the only one).

Sake bombs are fun and the taste is nice and mellow and leaves a nice warm feeling in your tummy.

somebody help me identify this
it's supposed to be very famous in china (according to my friend Quang) and the strongest there i think
you drink it warm/hot
i think that may be the key
it's sweeter warm/hot and the smell itself is enough to clear your sinuses (damn it burned)
it's sipped

etc. etc.
i dunno
it came in one of those jugs that a drunken kung fu master might be carrying with him

i think it was old
argghhhh whatever it was it was damn good

They're usually made from Jello and Vodka in shot molds - just small dentist cups. But you can substitute any kind of liquor for Vodka.

I'm not a big drinker, and I don't think I like beer at all. Right now, pinot noir at dinner works very well.

I don't like blends very much though -- think i once had a glass of merlot-bordeaux-pinot noir at a wine tasting --- got me drunk pretty quickly, but tasted ??? Think they called it "Mystery" or something.

How about mixed drinks? I find that I don't like apple martinis (taste too much like jolly ranchers) or margaritas. Enjoyed Grasshoppers, but turns out not too many places know how to make them. Ever been to TGI Fridays with their enormous "ice-cream sundae-like" mudslides -- those are soooo good.

i had a mudslide at applebee's last night.
that's like, milkshake.
needs more kahlua. so cheap with the liquor.

and then went to a wine bar and had a glass of argentinian merlot.
augh.
it was good.

is beer an acquired taste because i can't stand it.
dark beer i can drink a bit.
