Shanghai schools court foreigners
Xinhuanet 2003-01-08 15:35:53

A number of Shanghai's middle schools are preparing to recruit students from abroad, in tandem with Chinese middle school students' hot pursuit of going abroad, according to the local educational authority.

The latest official statistics show that a total of 71 middle schools in Shanghai have gained certificates from the local educational authority allowing them to enroll international students.

A group of Japanese parents paid a visit to Shanghai Ganquan Middle School earlier this week after the school held a public recruitment meeting in Osaka, Japan last December.

"They are considering sending their children to study here," said Liu Guohua, headmaster of the school. He said 10 Japanese children are already studying at the school which is known for its Japanese-language teaching.

Sources with the International Exchange Department under the Shanghai Education Commission said the city government will regularly organize these middle schools to go abroad to recruit students in the coming years.

"We are considering such a plan some time this year or next year," said the commission's Liu Jiangyuan.

According to Liu, the city has been organizing its colleges and universities to hold annual joint recruitment expositions abroad.

"Now, it's also a time for our middle schools to go abroad," said Liu, noting that it was "a natural tendency" as the city strengthens its links with the international community.

Shanghai's middle schools recruited more than 500 overseas students last year, mainly from Asian countries such as Japan and the Republic of Korea, according to commission statistics.

Overseas students at local middle schools also come from other countries including the United States, Canada, Brazil and Thailand.

Chances are, if you send your kids there, they will get a better education than most public middle schools in the US. No doubt.

It's common knowledge that Asian born kids are much better at math than their western born counterparts. I think it involves the left brain thinking. There's also something called the 'Box Method' that all young Asian kids learn that gives them an advantage. Wish I was taught that.

Actually, I rocked at math until I stopped studying it under my mom (who gave me extra home-schooling), so I dunno about that whole Asian genetic thing. Now the only math I am capable of using in every day life is like 'Ok I want a banana split but it is ripping me off for 5 bucks, and I have only 4 bucks, therefore I'm screwed'.

Box is a method of doing math that's taught in grade schools in HongKong and in many Asian schools. It gives automatic tugging of brains to force them to think better. Only FOBs would know how to do this. It's said that this method makes the critical difference between ABCs and FOBs in terms of math and logical thinking.

Examples?

Unfortunately I never learned this method (I'm ABC) But I heard it from an ex and my niece who just got a new schoolmate from HK. This new student BTW, has quickly become the teachers assistant in math and is charged with grading the math homework papers. They're taking over!

They teach that method in some tutoring places back in LA, smart business = great math scores. I think that's also why math is more accelerated in Asia too. I know some people who immigrated here who said they weren't good at math or it wasn't their favorite subject or anything but they were ahead here just because it was review for them.

I, on the other hand, suck camels at math.

But that is true for many, I may even say most immigrants I know, when it comes to math.

Even little kids who come here around six or so.

In the West Indies they teach elementary math differently, almost as a mantra type of way. As early as four (whenever the kid starts school) they are taught multiplying and dividing in a chant. . .

". . .Two twos is four. Two into four is two.
Two threes is six. Two into six is three.
Two fours is eight. Two into eight is four. . ."

I don't see these kids coming up here and counting on their fingers like many American kids their age do.

If these people caught you counting on your fingers, they would immediately
put you into the 'moron' category. I found that out the non politically correct way. :retard:

You were labeled as "dunce" and in many schools, the teacher would attempt to beat the kid into learning.

(I don't advocate any of the above, though.)

I'm told things are quickly changing in the W.I., though. I used to be able to brag, at least for my family’s country, but the educational systems are going down the toilet now.

is the box method strictly an untranslatable asian language oriented thing? or can it be taught in any language?
