View Full Version : Looks...do they really matter?

Looks play a part in initial attraction, no doubt about it. But when it really comes down to it, how important are looks to you in deciding to date someone or not? Have a certain "type" that you just can't find due to flaws? Do you get hung up on little "imperfections"? Chunky fingers? Hairy knuckles?
The answer always seems to reveal a little about our own insecurities, so it helps to be straight with yourself.
Personally, I've always had this hangup on dating tall girls. 5'5" is about as tall as I'd like the girl to be without it getting scary for me. I once dated this girl who was 5'10"...it just couldn't happen for me. She just felt too mannish...something about being with someone close to my eye-level. I know for sure now that I'm more attracted to petite girls.

BAD TEETH!!!! I hate bad teeth. I can't bare the thought of kissing someone with bad teeth. Luckily my g/f teeth are perfect. Which makes me want to kiss her even more.

Looking good certainly helps... and I won't deny that when I'm dating somebody, things about them that bother me will CONSTANTLY bother me... but all in all, if I like somebody enough to overlook the fact that they're fugly, I'll go ahead and dive right in.
I don't get hung up on the little things (i.e. hairy knuckles, weird ears, etc)... but I can't stand weird body hair and fat guys. Too bad my man is hairy. And he's got the makings of a beer belly. S'ok, though, I like him anyway. He makes body hair and beer bellies look goooood. Hahaha~ Nah, I mean, seriously, if you like the guy, you sort of don't see the bad things. I rarely notice anything that bothers me about my man. I think it's cute.

i don't like girls that wear birkenstocks

I hope it doesn't matter that much otherwise i'm out of luck =)
i don't like the birkenstocks cause they've gotten so popular, i tried wearing them they're so impractical, you can barely walk in 'em (or at least I can't)
I can overlook some physical traits. To tell you the truth, I wouldn't want to date a gorgeous woman, sure I'd wanna fuck her, but i wouldn't wanna date her. There's something intimidating and silently condescending about that.
But like anyone else, I wouldn't want anyone ass ugly.

perhaps you don't know it, but some overwhelmingly gorgeous woman are very capable of looking past physical appearance, because they have been judged by their appearance all their lives and they don't like it.
there is no need to feel intimidated by a girl's appearance alone. there has been studies done on the correlation between beauty and self-esteem in women. what the study produced is actually a bell curve, meaning that the women that are the most confident turns out to be the ones that are the most average looking, while the ones that are the most beautiful or the most ugly are the most lacking in self-esteem.
so really, you shouldn't hestitate to go for the most gorgeous women. there's a very good chance that you're the kind of guy that can give them what they want.

Looks and personality go hand in hand to me. Looks basically mean impeccable hygiene, but I value personality to a greater extent than the way one looks. After all, we're going to grow old in the long run anyway. Mine as well have something else to compensate for the aging process. :)

As long as I'm compatible with the person, I couldn't care less. I was once attracted to someone who I wouldn't have even given a look at on the street. But her personality attracted me to her. The same goes for pretty girls with NASTY ASS Attitudes. I could ignore their dumb-ass attitued for the way they look. But that's a fleeting moment, cuz I'd get too damn annoyed, and ignore them. But you'd have to royally piss me off and push me to place me in that situation. *shrug*

i have a difficult time believing it when someone says he/she doesn't care about looks. i think for most people there is acceptable level of good looks for whether or not he/she will consider dating a person.
I've dated all kinds - jocks, geeks, ubersmarties, frat boys, short boys (5'3), tall boys (6'2), White, Asian, Hispanic, etc. Humor and intelligence are definitely the defining factors for me. As long as they have good hygiene and that indefiniable chemical attraction, I'd date them. It's really who I get along with. A nice smile and kickin attitude goes a long way. I very attracted to guys with tons of self-confidence and who commands attention. Even if they aren't Brad Pitt hot, they become more attractive when they exude confidence and gregariousness.

Tight standards for a girlfriend

In my case. It constitutes looks and personality. But, I'm more inclined to sacrifice a little personality for looks.

Looks for personality... personality for looks. it's basically one big balancing act.
Looks matter a hell of a lot more than people admit to, in my opinion....
I am a firm believer that looks is what draws attention intially. However, the looks part fades away almost as quick, and the personality takes over as the deciding factor if someone is attractive.*

after awhile, they become beautiful to you.
All the ugly guys I know with great personalities are still single. Hell, they can't even get dates. The truth is, looks will always be an integral part of the initial attraction. Nobody looks at someone and says, "Hmmm he's fugly but he could be beautiful inside..."
I challenge anybody to provide an instance where this was not the case. I'd love to hear it...

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you are telling the truth, i.e. you are an extremely studly and handsome piece of Vietnamese beef. However, if she was going to check you out before, she sure as #@$#% wouldn't now...
9.90, wow, you must be able to induce orgasms in -0.5 seconds. Not even Virginia my blow-up doll gets 9.90, not to mention actual real life people who aren't made of plastic and don't have flawless features and have a few pores here and there. Who guessed that Pho was such a natural confidence booster. Now I'm thinkin' about goin down to the local place to get me a fix....^^
For me, even as a guy who admits to having his shameless horndog moments, no amount of beauty can make up for such a hot-air filled attitude. A super hot girl or guy's beauty will fade over time (just like physical beauty in general), and in the end I'd just be left with nothing more than someone who was full of herself. If beauty is all someone is looking for, they will never be satisfied because I have been friends with the hottest women and in the end they all turn out to be ordinary because after seeing the same thing over again, that shit just wears off.

Anyways I guess I shoulda just answered the forum question instead of trying to start a flame war (unsuccessfully  ).
Regarding looks. Of course looks matter! Sexual and physical attraction is not just a big part of the initiation of a relationship or hook-up but also about 1/4 (if not more) (also btw not a scientifically proven measurement) of the content and substance of a relationship. It's hard to enjoy a relationship with a guy or girl with whom you don't find attractive at all or repulsive.

looks. initial attraction. i guess? like if i was ever gonna go up to a complete stranger it'd be because of something physical. his smile. his ass. but then yeah...the personality role would have to come in strong also in order for both of us to hit it off.
but if i started talking to someone that wasn't at first physically attractive to me. and i feel completely for his personality...there's always something that i can find beautiful. a great tummy to lie on. or a kind smile.
i don't really know what an ugly person is by definition. like horrid looking? or a horrible personality?. i guess if you spend enough time looking at a person. you manage to find something beautiful about them. as long as i don't get a physical reaction due to somethin repulsive ...like shit smeared across his face ...i think i'm fine? depends if i hit it off with the guy or not. yeah.
a great ass is always good.
but i've also got 3 eeyores at home.

I'm surprised ATD didn't mention his penis size too. It's too big to even imagine, right? <_<
Personally, really attractive guys with really big egos piss the hell out of me. Especially the big muscular ones. Eck. Besides, I prefer guys' build to be a little big bigger than athletic build and under. I don't like big huge guys. Guys bigger than me are really great, but not if they can swallow me. I like them real tall. I'm not really picky about height though, as long as they're not shorter than me. But 6ft and above is a nice nice nice bonus. Sometimes I like them lanky too. My last boyfriend was stick skinny (I called him Noodleboy) and I loved it, because he was 6'2" as well. I love blue eyes, or green eyes. But grey eyes are dead sexy on guys. What I can't stand is bad hygiene, greasy faces, greasy people, bad breath, and a bunch of other stuff. I hate fat. If they have a huge protruding belly, it's not fun to tease them. I like to kiss skinny or muscular bellies. But if it's fat, then blech. I don't mind hair on their arms, legs, and pubes (sometimes it's sexy even), but I hate hair on their torsos. Um, I forget what else.
But yeah, personality and looks go hand in hand for me. If the guy was fugly as hell, he'd better have one fucking hell of a personality if he wanted the relationship to last. I'm not shallow, but this is human nature. If he was just ugly and had a great personality, then it wouldn't be that bad. But good looking and complete asshole doesn't go together either. Rather date ugly and great than hot and shit piss annoying.

Yes looks matter for me. I'm all about looks, brains etc etc etc. I want it all in a wife. Why settle for second best, when you potentially might be spending the rest of your life with that person. Sure looks might fade, but sometimes it's also about the instant gratification that goes along with the long term.
Plus, hopefully by then I can ask for cosmetic procedures done and chalk it up as a professional favor. Just being real. Remember: POTENTIALLY THE REST OF YOUR LIFE WITH THAT PERSON. Scary ain't it.

Sure looks might fade, but sometimes it's also about the instant gratification that goes along with the long term.
Plus, by then I can ask for professional favor from plastic surgeons. Sorry just being real.
or you can just get a trade-in for a newer model...

Easier said then done. Prolly easier to get an O.S.P. thing going on and hope your wife don't catch you.
Professional favor = free. Divorce = $$$$$$$
edit: this coolie ain't ashamed and sometimes damn proud to be shallow!

hope you don't mind me asking why?
yeah. if you're not a 10 looks-wise, as long as your personality compensates for the lacking, you're good.
i'm not a 10 looks-wise and my personality can't compensate. at least i'm 6', can take a good picture, and can dj!

Once the War on Terrorism is over, I will post my picture.........And like the hundreds of other females out there, you too will witness my "outer beauty"...... :P
I can't help it if I'm a handsome guy.......It's beyond my control :D
Personality.........if I get into a car accident and my face is disfigure, then I'll change my personality.. I'm be the ugly guy w/ the great personality.........Until then, I will still maintain my "so so" personality. "If it aint broke, dont fix it".......
----------------------
Applehead, if you saw me at the club, you would be checking me out like the rest of the girls there  .......Remember physical beauty is the first thing that people notice..... :P
isn't the internet fun? if we don't post our pics or diclose our real names, we can play pretend and be who we've always wanted to be. :)
and what's with this war on terrorism crap? we've had 2 major preliminary injunction hearings in our courtroom - you may have read about them on the front page of your paper in november - regarding national security and the war on terrorism. everyone who was important to the process and thus who may need to maintain some on-line anonymity were there. were you there? which courtroom was it in? who was the judge?
but to answer this thread's question: looks count, but the second i sense any arrogance, the guy suddenly, almost magically, becomes completely and utterly physcially unattractive.
