So your hardass Asian parents basically claimed that b/c you're Asian and all and there's this bamboo ceiling and shit, the only way to get a good job is to go to an elite university.

Think again...employers these days are leaning towards state universities over the elites.

The comments from the two Asian guys are amusing as hell. Loved seeing them get their panties in a bunch over this revelation.

for those who don't want to waste their life digging around through 75 comments looking for "Asian names", it's "Mark Tan" and "Ray Kung" on page 3 ... your amusement value may vary ...

You don't think they're funny? You think that they should've been taken seriously?

I just think it's amusing as fuck that pretty much all the comments agreed w/ the article. But the two Asian guys happened to make a big fuss going to big name schools, like it was braggin' rights or somethin'.

I dunno, just getting annoyed at all this Asian obsession w/ prestige, like it's the only thing in the world that matters.

Psst... I think it's your obsession.

with all this jawboning about how superb the State schools are, do you really think that's going to change the high school student's and parents' paradigms about Harvard being the number 1 choice, and Penn state around # 30 ? Not one bit. But it does make the rejectees ( a substantial number, myself included ) feel better about themselves? You BET!

Well said! Personally, I went to a large state UG school (a midwest big ten school) and I understand why state school is popular since, as employees, we are easier to manage and with less ego. We don't want to start our own social networking companies or hedge fund. We just want to be an analyst or engineer.

I missed the funny.

I have to agree on this. My bf also went to USC and he does not harp on this state schools vs. "elite" schools at all. EVER. Maybe it's the people he hangs out and works with. Really down-to-earth, non-judgmental, etc. Thank god he's not obsessed with this because if I had to listen to this everyday, I would probably shoot myself.

There does exist a "bamboo ceiling" and regardless of where you got your degree, it's there to meet you when you're rising up in the ranks.

Anyway, right off the bat the article says that recruiters are going to huge public universities because they get more bang for the buck. Basically they're saying that these schools are like Costco.

I'm seriously never going to be able to identify with this repressed anger toward Asian parents who pressured you to do well academically because my parents never did that and even let my sister go to an fine arts school where classes are all pass/fail.

Word. The only thing I ever got miffed about regarding my parents was their divorce. But I got over it.

My sister has a degree in...communications? Some bs like that and she works for a non-profit. I work as an office prank monkey. Parents cared about school but never suffocated us with ridiculously high expectations or beat us when we brought home an A-. They just care that we're happy with what we're doing and in life generally.

Same here. Though I ended up doing the academic/professional thing, it had nothing to do with my parents pushing me in that direction. If anything, there was a distinct lack of pressure to perform academically or achieve financial success in our family.

Both my older and younger brothers barely graduated from high school, and ended up at community college. Older brother found his calling in fine art and Asian American studies, eventually transferred to UCLA, collected a bunch of degrees and is now curator of the Chinese American museum here in LA. Little brother is still figuring out what to do with his life.

My cousin on the other hand had it a little tougher than I did, her mom was cool with her doing whatever she wanted more or less and learning from her mistakes but her had was a hardass and would pretty much monopolize her class schedule.

If you guys don't think this model minority crap is such a big deal, then explain the surge of ILLEGAL prescription drug abuse by Asian American students.

I've witnessed first-hand this phenomenon. It's a silent epidemic. Asian American students, under pressure to perform well academically and living up to cultural expectations, often turn to prescription drugs to help them focus and study. OF course, this is seldom reported in the media (if at all) and few, if any, Asian Americans get in trouble b/c of their parents don't want to report to the police, and besides, in Asian culture, it's a "win at all costs" mentality.

I think the model minority myth is a serious issue. I just think you're blaming the wrong people and your rage against elite schools is irrelevant.

There has been a long history of physical punishment in my family, passed down generation to generation. The violence wasn't even because of school, as I did quite well. I think it was because I wasn't a boy. I dunno, I have had depression for as long as I can remember and I think it's my parents' fault.

Whenever you get sick of America, Canada still has a good public health system... but it's slowly being overbogged by a growing population, which translates into 6AM lineups to get to see the doctor early. YMMV
