Stuff Asian People Like: Duke Basketball

This article is written by a Chinese guy, presumably a Duke alum (or at least a longtime Duke fan).

Duke basketball definitely has a HUGE following among Chinese and Koreans. Back where I'm at, it seems like all the Asians are rooting for Duke. All the white people are rooting against Duke, but every Asian i know wants Duke to win it all.

Coincidentally, Duke is the only "elite" academic school to survive the NCAA final four.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but it seems like the Chinese guy who wrote the article is representative of at least the Chinese and Koreans who jump on Duke's bandwagon.

It's also funny that every time I watch Duke play basketball on TV, they always like to pan to a bunch of Asian nerds and dorks in blue and white makeup or body paint, trying to look "cool" and be part of the school spirit, only they look like Asian dorks!!! i see that a lot w/ Cal football -- nerdy Asian dorks wearing body paint and trying to show their school spirit in an attempt to look "cool."

It seems like unless you're a duke alum, the only people who are rooting for Duke to win are Asians. White, blacks, and hispanics want Duke to fail!!! (All the Black people I know are rooting for Michigan State it seems.)

I think the Stuff Asian People Like website needs to include an article on Duke basketball for the above reasons!!!

I probably could care less.

I just think it's funny that I appear to be one of the very few Asians out there who's rooting for WVU over Duke.

I guess most asian people would rather associate themselves with duke than WVU for obvious reasons.

The reason Duke may stick out in some Asian minds over here is because of the Duke Talent Search program : http://www.tip.duke.edu/

The program is run for students in the following states: AL, AR, FL, GA, IA, KS, KY, LA, MS, MO, NE, NC, OK, SC, TN, and TX.

USC is right. I frequent a gaming website with a huge Korean following, and when one of the member gamers (white guy who attends Duke) went to Korea to join a professional team much attention was given to the fact that he was from Duke.

There are non-Asian Dook bandwagoners out there (e.g., Dick Vitale) though that number seems to have decreased significantly lately.

One thing is for certain, unless you're a Duke alum or have significant ties to the university (family went there, etc.), everybody I know is rooting for Butler.

Everybody except Asians. All the Asian people I know want Dook to win. I'm probably one of the very few Chinese people rooting for Butler.

Anyway, I will also say another college sports team that has a significant Asian following is my Trojans football team. Except for UCLA students/alumni, all the Asian people I know (ironically perhaps, especially those who went to other universities such UC Riverside, Irvine, UCSD, etc.) all love the Trojans. Cal football also appears to have a significant Asian following (though that's probably due to the high Asian student population there). I remember watching a Cal/USC football game and the camera pans to all these dorky looking Asians wearing body paint, trying to be cool. lol.

seeing as im currently into Basketball again, why the fk should I care about NCAA B ball, and who should I be watching?
