"Nippertipping" case results in 1 year and 364 day sentence

Justice Alfred Stong found that Trevor Middleton, 23, was motivated partly by racism when he and three truckloads of Georgina Township youths shoved Ruohang Liu, 24, and Charles Hogan, 24, into Lake Simcoe early in the morning of Sept. 16, 2007, in the type of attack some locals referred to as “Nip-” or “Nipper-tipping.” One of their friends was left with permanent brain damage in the attack.

“There is no justice in Canada,” an Asian-Canadian man shouted in the hallway of the courthouse.

Liu was handcuffed and taken into custody by York Region police after the armrest of a courthouse chair was thrown into a hallway window, shattering it. Police did not immediately comment on whether he had been charged.

Liu had earlier told the court he still suffers nightmares about the attack, which left his close friend, Shayne Berwick, 26, with brain damage and requiring a wheelchair.

“I will not go fishing ever in Canada again,” Liu said in his victim impact statement. “I no longer trust anyone I meet. I feel like I can only trust people I have from the past.”

A man who was in Liu’s Honda Civic as it was rammed repeated by Middleton’s pickup and forced off the road into a tree said the early morning violence still haunts him.WTH?? The guy should get two years, just for shoving the guys into the water. He should get another 5-10 years for ramming their car off the road in the chase that ensued.

Edit: Okay, so it looks like he was only charged for ramming them off the road. Still, two years for that is nothing. How much would the sentence have been without the hate crime special circumstance? Lame.

i wonder if the guy who threw the chair - the Asian guy, Ruohang Liu - is experiencing a kind of survivor guilt, especially since the attack was racially motivated and he was the Asian target.

There doesn't seem to be any deterrent for this sort of behavior. What they should do is wear spikes on their backs, underneath their clothes.

proberly just a few months without the hate crime tag.

even with it these scumbags proberly won't do the full 2 years.....
