Based on a current sci-fi/martial arts comic, but....well....look who the main character is. That is all.

well if Tom Cruise gets to be the Last Samurai, it only makes sense that David Henrie gets to be Tommy Zhou.

Found a site that let you preview the first few issues of the comic.

Yet another white guy playing an Asian American....

Whoopity damn doo....

But if it makes y'all feel better, we had Asian guys playing white characters recently....

Eric Yorkie (I believe the Twilight books described him as either a white character or hispanic) was played by korean American Justin Chon in the movie Twilight (Chon also had a white hispanic girlfriend in the film, Christian Serratos, and there are rumors they are dating in real life).

In The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants 1 and 2, Leonardo Nam played a guy named "Brian McBrian." In the book, it was made clear he was supposed to be a white person. He also had a pretty hot love scene w/ Amber Tamlyn (it was fairly racy for a PG-13 movie, and had one of the more explicit AM/WF love scenes this side of The Lover w/ Tony Leung and Jane Marsh).

In X-Men origins: Wolverine, Agent Zero (David North) is played by hapa Daniel Henney (if you've read the comic books, you know he's clearly a white person).

so Asians are making strides in some ways. We have Asian people portraying characters who are clearly supposed to be Caucasian.

They are all minor characters or minor villains. The only instance I can remember where a major lead character was changed to Asian from the original source was Lucy Liu in Carlie's Angels. I don't think they did that one for the sake of diversity or Asian American representation.

Only one that is worth noting is Leonardo Nam's role in Sisterhood, only because even though his role was small, it was fairly important and goes completely against the stereotypes.

Really, the only major progress we are making is that we might be slowly taking some token minority spots from African Americans.

i think the intentions is what sets apart your examples of asian guys playing 'white' parts vs. white guys playing the lead in every anime released so far.

btw, jane marsh is a hapa also.

People love to talk shit about Twilight, but I found the first movie to be alright, and will watch the second one. It's a shallow story, but who cares..
