Apparently, this needs to be addressed. Had I not seen it with my own two eyes and heard it with my own two ears I would not have been forced to believe it.

Dear parents of hapa kids: "Gaijin" is not a proper legal name for a mixed child.

Sadly, this needs to be said.

The kid needs to kill his parents, preferably before they can breed again ...

ouch. i could maybe understand how the non-asian parent might make this mistake, but what about the asian one?

Any blasian kid named 'Tiger'. I would tell them to go for a legal name change by court order immediately.

Edit: Five golden stars. Excellent topic for discussion.

OK. Yes, that was an exaggeration on my part.

maybe you give an Asian parent more credit than s/he deserves. Kimora Lee Simmons did name one of her daughters Ming Lee.

If they're a kid, I would assume in most states they would need to wait until they became an adult to legally try to change their name.Probably as a general rule, yes. But in extreme cases, the Court might take custody of the kid to help him or her out, as in the NZ case of Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii (http://abcnews.go.com/WaterCooler/wireStory?id=5439648).

Here are some names I think are cool, but are probably better left for pets, not children:

Optimus
Voltron
Devastator
Bruticus

What about Nicolas Cage's hapa son, Kal-El. Granted, the name had nothing to do with his hapaness but rather his dad is a douche, but com'on.

I had to be wrong. No one names a kid that. I'll check again later but maybe it was something close to Gaijin and I both heard and read it wrong. That has to be it.

This is precisely why so many countries have legal lists of names (not just CJK-character countries either; e.g. Poland) that you have to pick from.

"Gaikokujin," however, is perfectly acceptable.

10 years to late, poo. "Jingai" is what all the cool hapa kids are named.

You might laugh at those names, but how about these from you good old public school days?

Mymeet, Shithead (with the TH pronounced), Phuoc Yu, Ransom, Keefe (because they wanted to name him Keith, but were so fobby they spelled it like they said it.), brother and sister named Asia and Eurasia, Atilla, Showlanja, the list goes on and on.

I knew a guy named "Richard Head". A friend claims that one of his former coworkers was named "Poon Tang".

Was quite a sad affair, ototo. I think it only lowered my husband's opinion of Japanese Americans.

How does one screw up obon? Don't people just get together and eat alot of food? Or.. did they try to make it ethnic and shove it down everyone's throat?

totally off topic: i've been wondering if the Japanese expats that live in Manhattan get tired of seeing Otakus at the Japan Society.

Japanese aren't unaware of American fascination. They just don't usually care either for or against unless it either becomes an obstacle or becomes useful. Do you really want to hear about Northwest Obon? It was the first one my husband ever went to. All he did was find some other Taiwanese people there and frown at fat white guys.

Lower?! That must've been horrible, then. Like BTR said...how do you screw up an obon?

I know...there must've been more furriners than authentics there?

By tell Kim's husband's fat white guys the only way to be truly accepted into the culture is to go around eating the food offerings at the shrines?

If I get a block of more than 5 min and I can make it somewhat amusing I'll write it up.
