DWI checkpoint? Never heard of such a thing. My guess is they don't care about the drinking and driving. They probably just want an excuse to make money. I'm sure they can find a bunch of people that don't have their latest insurance cards in their glove box, etc.

Tons of checkpoints abound. Also "zero tolerance" for drunk people on the streets.

A cousin and a friend have been arrested on DUI charges. Apparently a lot of people in the tank have been there multiple times for DUI or being drunk in public.

Might be a good time to make plans for a designated driver, find free cab services, plot out mass trans. Sometimes MADD sponsors free cab rides. If I find some I'll post it. On subject the DUII/DWI experience is from the side of the... oh, what's the word people like to use... oh yeah, "pigs". Hear me oink.

I think pig is more for the sober. My cousin tried to punch the cop. Drunk girlfriend was cussing than began sobbing.

There's no national program (I also checked MADD's mainpage). Do a search by city with the words "safe sober ride" and your city should get a hit.

How's the job hunt going?

the question is probably more appropriate as a private message or visitor message on his profile (http://forums.yellowworld.org/member.php?u=3318), especially since it's completely off-topic.

I've encountered them before. Usually the officers just talk to me for a minute to try to smell alcohol on my breath. They didn't even ask for my license and registration, etc...

I've driven through three of them without them even having me roll down my window. Every time though I was wearing a coat so I didn't look like party central so they probably figured I was sober. I think they're usually looking for people in some sort of sloppy party wear.

I would imagine it would depend on the department, the geography and the campaign. Our department, and let me make it clear while I was technically staff I was never an officer, measured by how few accidents in conjunction with how many drunk drivers taken off the road.

If you do get caught, and I hope anyone driving impaired would no matter how much I otherwise like you on YW, make sure you have a single, small piece of paper with the HOME PHONE number of a responsible adult friend or family member in case you're released to a responsible party. Do not write down a cell phone number. Home phone. Ask nicely to keep it. Otherwise, if it's in your phone when you're first being processed ask nicely if you can access a number from your cell phone with a simple piece of paper and small pencil.

There were always checkpoints in college between dorms and most residences and frat row. In cities I've lived in they've inevitably been near nightlife districts or the zone where commercial becomes residential to catch people.

I remember we'd be given pamphlets and refrigerator magnets about what to do if cops show up at your apartment or pull you over since the police department had been notorious for racial profiling. I can't find the copy of it we had online, but here's some links in case if you decide for some reason to drink too much and put your lives and everyone else's at risk:
