I've read some stupid things and I've read some ignorant things in the school newspaper at UW. This one takes the cake though. I don't know if I've read anything more blatantly racist in a "mainstream" newspaper before.

Basically the writer, Rick Chan, argues that Asians shouldn't play basketball because it is the sport of "black barbarians."

Some excerpts from this bs: I noticed a game photograph from the ESPN Web site that features Ming trying to hold on to the ball while a swarm of four black players attempt, with all their predator rage, to steal the ball away. This display of savagery was exemplified by the raw exhibition of black and yellow flesh. Muscles bulge intensely from the players’ long limbs, sweat pours down their faces, and their jerseys are so light that they could care less about putting on a Chippendale’s minstrel show.

He says Yao Ming shouldn't be a role model for Asian American youth but says that it is different for Ichiro because Ichiro plays the more civilized sport of white suburbia, baseball. He also says: Essentially, Ichiro is Japanese, and he came from a Westernized Asian nation which called the Chinese the sick men of Asia during World War II. Between Ichiro and Ming is the binary opposition between civilization and the jungle

Then, in trying to get rid of "Asian stereotypes," he goes out and stereotypes blacks. There are so many fallacies in his arguments that you have to read it for yourself to see.

When I first read that article, I was kinda pissed. Not only that it was published in the newspaper, but also because it was written by a fellow Asian American. The newspaper got pages and pages of response to it; probably the most for an article in many years.

I just had to get that off my chest. It pisses me off how some people can be so ignorant.

heh, wow. what an elitist. but its a college paper. i remember a lot of college writers taking an indefensible position just to create some controversy where none existed before or push it up another notch when it did exist.

Hehe unfortunately for him, his pic was right next to the article. I heard from someone that he's gotten a beat down for that article.

I see what you're saying WongBa about college papers and the use of controversy, but it seems pretty blatant to me. He's not just comparing sports, but assigning races and judgments to those sports.

I think it's one thing to try to push the envelope and try to make the audience to think critically, but when you start pushing buttons and there is no positive merit out of it, there has to be a limit.

and to the races as well... he sounds a bit like a college republican who likes to get as extreme as possible just to seem like a political martyr.

Well I'm not a Yao Ming fan, but I certainly don't think that him being in the NBA is going to cause Asian kids to have what this guy calls "ghetto dreams"

Again, this kind of argument sounds like it came from the AASU of my school and it is clear evidence that some of the people who act in the name of Asian activism are freakin retarded.

kitty

you sure he's an aa activist? the end or the editorial sort of implies it, but not really strongly...

HH: i wasn't really trying to defend him. he's obviously wrong and blatantly racist. its just that for some reason, i don't take what college papers put out very seriously. i've seen stuff like this before from Harvard to Auburn. I'm most familiar with Auburn's paper and it routinely smears and trashes the names of people they disagree with. and auburn's paper is a regular winner of the pacemaker award. to me its just some guy screaming for attention.

and he called basketball a barbaric sport! how fucking stupid!

Napoleon Chynamite
12-11-2002, 08:51 PM
Yea I'm kinda weirded out by that 'barbaric sport' thing in addition to the racist overtone. Why would he refer to basketball in such a bad, if not simply bizarre and nonsensual (is that a word, I'm not sure, like nonsense-sual not non + sensual anyways) seeing as how mainstream the sport is. Makes me wonder exactly if both of his balls are in working order. He's either begging to get laughed at or to get his ass kicked

sal612
12-11-2002, 09:32 PM
Well shit, I think sports like football and rugby or something would be the FIRST in line to get called "barbaric", but basketball is throwing a ball in a hoop. Please. If that is considered improper, then shall you watch another sport like...badminton? Crochet? Enjoy...

I'm sorry but dude he's as stupid as they come. Great...now we have Asian supremists running around.
Rick Chan, get it through your head, if it wasn't for a black brotha named Martin Luther King Jr. ain' no nigga, chink (i'm one), nip, or otherwise would be given any respect yet. Don't hate on mai niggas (and that's with an a not an er. racists make it a point to say nigger, brothas say nigga or nig'. I know this cause I'm from tha hood ya' herd) aiight. Seriously dawg, I grew up with a lot of brothas up in Chicago and they all coo. Don't be callin' them barbarians and shit. Shoot Rick, you just jealous cause you can't crossover like Iverson. These days most of my Asian friends play ball, so what you gonna call them barbarians also. It's a sport mutha fucka. And what the hell is your problem with rappin', bitch shut you hole. Word up, ghetto dreams are dreams too. I came from the ghetto and you suburbian brats betta recognize.
Now I need to get back to normal English and calm down so I don' fuckin' pop a cap in Rick Chan's ass.

Getting into the N word debate...

I used it all the time with some black friends... He'd call me a chink and a honkey back and it didn't matter cuz we were friends.

Then one day I saw him on campus and said hey wassup N and another black guy happened to be passing me and gave me some serious shit for calling my friend that. He then proceded to blame me for slavery and started calling me a white supremecist and a classic example of the racist who does not know he is racist.

Because I don't want all the greif, I don't use it in public anymore. But if we are in a group and only among friends, and i happened to use it, then thats the way it goes. But I don't make any concious efforts not to use it.

Really it depends on the way you use it and your intentions behind it I think.

Yea there was this other article that was like some sort of pseudo-apology from one of the editors or main people from the paper and he came across like as if he actually didn't think that so many people would be offended and he was truly sorry. It doesn't take some journalism major to recognize that this clown's work is not publishable material....kinda like that same shit with the whole Abercrombie saying 'I had no idea, I thought people would think it's funny or interesting'.

Did anyone check out Ming in the Jet magazine? He was looking good with one of the Black cheerleaders he was sharing the umbrella with.

How tall is he? And just what in the hell did his parent feed him in China?

Anyway, dude needs to toughen up and start smacking that attitude back to some of those players.
