In an ominous sign, transit union leader Roger Toussaint said Tuesday the union and the MTA were “two continents apart” in their negotiations. He asked that Gov. Pataki get involved in the talks between the Transport Workers Union and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
Negotiations between the two sides have stalled days before the union’s contract expires on Sunday.
Toussaint's grim assessment came as members of a state Assembly committee questioned the need for a subway and bus fare hike.
Mayor Bloomberg has said that in the event of a strike, the city will restrict traffic into and out of Manhattan to vehicles carrying four or more people.

Didn't a judge issue an injunction disallowing a strike?

Walk to your destination..........or Bike...............If its snowing I guess your SOL.... :P
Yes, a NY Supreme Court judge invoked the Taylor Law preventing public workers from striking. The union made it clear the strike would be a last resort and talked about postponing it later in the week. The injunction doesn't solve the problem as a walkout is still possible. It just delays it.
Wonder what Bloomy really wants to do. Yes, he's a businessman, but he's now a politician. I don't really view him being a businessman as being a real advantage since he is not afforded the priviliges a businessman would have. It's pretty apparent from what he's said so far; offering to ride a bike could only flow from a politician's lips.
a_t_d, it's impossible for many New Yorkers to walk or bike. Bloomy lives and works in Manhattan and that's not so bad. At the northernmost tip to the financial district it's about 10 miles with mostly straight roads and bike lanes. The people that live in other boroughs would have major problems as it's not exactly safe biking over the bridges with the wind. They'd get blown into the East River. This will cripple the poorer segments of NYC.
I'm glad I actually live in Manhattan so I won't have to carpool anywhere, but what do the rest of you New Yorkers think of the fare hike? I gotta tell you, after Hong Kong, NYC subway fares don't seem high. But then again, I still wouldn't want an increase in price since I depend on the subway and bus system to get to work everyday.
A_T_D, I live up on the Upper West Side and I work down in the Financial District, which is hella far away. There is no way I can walk and I wouldn't bike all that way. Too dangerous and too many people.
Oops sorry ism!! eesh, can't edit, too late. But what do you New Jersey residents think of the proposed fare hike?
Honestly, I think the fare is cheap for the length it could take you, but I never really take it that far. The single fare makes it easier to administrate and toll but it also makes me feel like the shorter trips are subsidizing the longer ones, and that I get the shaft. I realize that the ones that take the longer trips probably need the subsidation and while I would prefer not to see the hike, think it is neccessary to benefit everyone.
Given the talk of extra taxes on out-of-state workers and these fare hikes though, NYC could be seeing an exodus of workers and companies.
Can't edit last message =/
Iris, to specifically address your question, it wouldn't be too much of an increase based on what I believe many people pay to get to NYC. Ferries, busses, trains, the PATH, can be anywhere from $3 to $12 per roundtrip and an additional dollar on top of the existing $3 for the subway would be a 15 percent increase at most. I have heard most people complain but accepting of the situation. People here are already arranging carpools. The increasing cost of living is just another fact of life.

Would it make any sense to administer a fare by distance on the subway? Or would that be too unwieldy?
LW, that's how they do it in HK. You get a card called an Octopus card, which you scan when you come in and then it takes off the amount when you scan as you get out. But overall, HK MTR (subway) is still more expensive than NYC.
ism, I think it's because most of us get the montly passes and the increases wouldn't be huge on it. For the non-New Yorkers, the subway fare is actually $1.50. ism is talking about roundtrip :) but you can get a $4 all day pass if you know you're going to several places and that'll save you money.
