China bans dog from Olympic menu
China has ordered dog meat to be taken off the menu at its 112 official Olympic restaurants in order to avoid offending foreign visitors.
Restaurant workers are advised to "patiently" suggest other options to diners who order dog.
Any restaurant found violating the ban would be black-listed, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Dog - known as "fragrant meat" - is eaten by some Chinese for purported medicinal properties.
The ban, issued by the Beijing Catering Trade Association, forbids all designated Olympic restaurants from offering dog and urges other food outlets to remove the meat from menus.
"If a customer orders dog meat, restaurant staff should patiently suggest another entree," said Xiong Yumei, deputy director of the Beijing Tourism Bureau told Xinhua.
Act of respect
The measure has been implemented to "respect the habits of many countries and nationalities," the Beijing News quoted the municipal food department as saying.
The BBC's James Reynolds says the ban is one of several steps taken by China to avoid foreign visitors being amused or offended by local customs.
Authorities have also told people to queue up politely, to smile and not to spit on the streets.
During the 1988 Seoul Olympics, South Korea also banned doggie dishes from menus. Officials invoked a law banning the sale of "foods deemed unsightly".
Dog meat is eaten in some other Asian countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.
It's not like people don't already make fun of us eating dogs. I don't agree with this at all. This is part of the culture, so I think visitors need to suck it up and show respect. About the no spitting and standing patiently in line....good luck with that.

I read in the Chinese paper during the FIFA world cup held in Korea in 2002 that international media outlets were complaining about the Korean consumption of dog during the games. The Korean response: they ate more dog.
China should follow the Korean example.

I remember Korea doing it too for the 88 Olympics. It probably hurt the handful of families who rely on the sale of dog meat. Foreigners are going, not only to see the Olympics, but to experience the local culture so I don't think it should be banned.

this reminds me of that time when me and my asian guy friend brought a white chick to chinatown. we put a plate of chinese food in front of her. she held one chopstick in each hand and stared at the plate. "is there dog in this? cuz i dont eat that"
both our chairs tipped over backwards laughing
^Wow...that is SO not funny.

How moronic. Everyone knows that you guys only add some powdered dog to a meal to enhance the flavor, a la Mrs. Dash.

I am the whitest person here and even I have never, ever known anyone like that... never mind ask them out to lunch. In Chinatown.

Actually yes, this stupid stuff really does happen in Chinatown. I remember once I was eating with my friends and this white girl and her dad came in. They sat down and the girl asked for water: "Can-we-have-ice-water? Water? Do-you-understand?" The busboy came back and slammed it down on the table. So yeah, I believe Cloud's story.

Tell me about it. That sort of crap always happens in Chinatown where I'm at too. The way some non Asian Americans treat the waiters/waitresses with disrespect makes me want to slap them. And of course it's always a 'racist thing' if the waiter/waitress cops an attitude ... when it's not.
Alot of these servers are working hard to earn a living. I worked in a Thai restaurant when I was young, as a p/t. So I know how it feels to put up with nonsense like that all the time.

I would have calmly told the daughter that maybe the busboy would understand better if she spoke like a normal person instead of a VCR stuck on slow-motion, like her brain apparently was during the whole interaction.

The ironic thing is I bet most people might even like it. I've never tried dog but I heard it tastes like a more tender version of beef. Similar to a cross between pork/beef.
Besides, the whole dog thing is played out. Euros eat cheese with maggots in it and horse meat. How is that more or less acceptable than dog.

I was walking down the street the other day (I'm in China) and this old white American guy wearing a fucking safari hat and hunting vest in the middle of a city and saying, "That little shit cut in line...I can't wait to push the button. We should just nuke this place."
I turned around and started cussing him out and saying "You better fucking watch your mouth boy, because we're taking over you bitches."

Well, I think there are legitimate concerns about dogs because of the belief that a dog that is tortured tastes better.

Sounds like some of the winning personalities I see here in Thailand. These guys are everywhere and they are pretty sad. They all look like aging alcoholics too.
One time this greasy tourist fuck demanded to see my ID when I was entering into the apartment that I was staying at on holiday. He was speaking pidgin English with me (assuming I didn't understand) and I just laughed and told him to fuck off and swung the metal gate into his foot. He said something like "well, You don't have to be rude!" in a whiny sniveling voice.
Yep, they're parasites but usually they are sad sacks and get pushed around or monetarily scammed by the local population. It's funny to see sometimes.

One time a Italian dude who's a Vietnam vet in my neighborhood came up to me and my friend who was Russian, cuts me off in the middle of my conversation and started complaining about 'gooks' taking over the area. Like what he said was of any importance. I told him to " shut his fucking mouth and get his neo nazi ass out of my face. I not tolerate this shit. "
He said that " all you Asians are nothing but pieces of shit " or something like that. Then my other friend grabbed me because he knew I was about to do something very, very bad. I started to scream at the man and told him to never ever come in my face with that shit again.
Just last week I was walking by a public school around 2:45 pm when all the school kids are let out of class. The school is predominantly Asian so naturally you can hear alot of Cantonese going on in the background. I saw that man again, taking out something from the trunk of a car -- a case of bottled water I think. This time he's muttering to himself, " .... speak English you mutherfuckers ... ". I approached him again and sarcastically whispered to him, " I bet those people can write and speak English better than you and anyone else in your dumbfuck family can. " He was too scared to say anything. So I walked away.

I wonder does that include dog wine as well?
Anyway, I agree with the view that it shouldn't be banned.
Australia didn't ban eating pork or beef when held the Olympics so why's it right to ban eating dogs in China?

This really shows how hypocritical the western media is. A case of blatant totalitarian governmental denial of personal choice in the mundane practice of daily cultural life and no shrill western voices raised in protest.
Apparently, the Chinese should only be trusted with whatever personal freedoms the west deems appropriate.

Banning dog meat and blacklisting anyone that doesn't comply is as much a violation of an individual's rights as imprisoning them for voicing an opposing political opinion. It's like telling Americans that they can't wear the colour red because it's not in style this year, and docking the wages of anyone that doesn't comply.
I suppose it comes down to how "blackilisted" is defined, but to me that at least would indicate a financial penalty for doing something that is completely culturally appropriate.
If western critics claim concern for the political and human rights of the "oppressed" Chinese(which it does) then to not voice protest at this particular type of oppression, possibly because the practice is culturally abhorrent to many westerners, is hypocritical -either the Chinese should be free to practice their culture as they themselves choose or it's appropriate to oppress them, it can't be both ways at once.

having different political opinions is a staple of american culture, eating dog meat isn't. when they protest something against china, it's usually against something that is viewed as a fundamental freedom or a right in the U.S. There's no American equivalent to eating dog meat. acting on that premise, you can't rightfully call them 'hypocrites'. A hypocrite is someone who does something but doesn't allow others to do the same thing. Again, there is no comparison to dog meat.
Your analogy about the color red makes no sense. There is nothing like that to compare to.

getting penalties for doing something you're not suppose to do happens in every country, it's called a fine and it's written into law. cultural appropriateness changes along with laws all the time.

the Chinese are free to practice their customs, it's their own government that's not allowing them to do it. Please don't ask the U.S. to intervene on this because you might as well have the American government running China instead.

Hypocrisy means to claim to possess moral qualities, beliefs or virtues that are superior to those of others, which one doesn’t actually possess. Much of the west’s China criticisms is based on the premise that they possess a compassionate concern for the well-being for those Chinese who may find themselves being oppressed by their own government.
China’s banning of dog-meat with the threat of blacklisting is oppression. By not protesting this oppression of the Chinese, western critics are being hypocritical. It highlights the reality that western criticism is motivated by xenophobia more than true concern.

Yes, when the behaviour is harmful to individuals or groups, and it’s typically the culture that evolves to a point where most of it’s constituents agree that the behaviour is no longer deemed acceptable. This is what we expect in a non-totalitarian society, and what we supposedly seek to encourage in a totalitarian one.
the Chinese are free to practice their customs, it's their own government that's not allowing them to do it. Please don't ask the U.S. to intervene on this because you might as well have the American government running China instead.
Where have I said that the U.S should intervene in China’s affairs? I’m simply expecting “compassionate” critics to act consistently, and when they don’t they can rightfully be called hypocrites.
I don’t see how the Chinese can be similtaneously free to practice their customs and yet not free to do so.

Great, more Western sensationalism.
Seriously though, if they're going to ban dog meat then why not ban the cooked grasshoppers and scorpions that are available in the street markets? It's ironic that the Chinese government should pander to Western tastes when it sees the Olympics as a great way to showcase Chinese culture to the world.

You wouldn't believe the shock on his face, he had no idea we were going there, but funnily enough he ended up liking most of the food (especially the Pad Thai). Since then I've successfully converted him from not claiming to like Chinese food to having the occasional Chinese meal every now and again.
