yeah i think so.... there is a protective spray that you can get (isn't it largely advertised over there ?)

i know you can always get an underbody steam clean. but that's basically, just a wash.

Salt? Why would you protect your car from salt? ... AHHH, attack of the salt shakers!!!

because in the east coast they salt the roads to help the winter ice melt away and salt is corrosive when it gets on the underside of your car. hence causing rust.

Okay, how do you protect your car from this (http://www.thenewsenterprise.com/articles/2002/12/10/news/news02.txt)?

No snow there?

Edit: yeah u gotta wash the salt off or go to one of them car washes that uses steam to get rid of the salt.

Go to Pep Boys or any Parts store and buy underbody spray.....I believe it's a tar like substance.....Kinda like the bed liners suff for trunks.....For a sedan, 6-10 cans will do...Approx 2.99 a can..........or you can take it to a professional and they'll charge you $200.00 + dollars for the work..

actually... the salt is laid on the roads to prevent freezing over, rather than to melt the snow, the sodium lowers the freezing point of water, etc etc....

there an answer dork they dont doit up here very often at all why? its just mountains that snow and the snow is light.

Question

Why do they use salt to melt ice on the road in the winter?

Answer

If you live in a place that has lots of snow and ice in the winter, then you have probably seen the highway department spreading salt on the road to melt the ice. You may have also used salt on ice when making home-made ice cream. Salt lowers the freezing/melting point of water, so in both cases the idea is to take advantage of the lower melting point.

Ice forms when the temperature of water reaches 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius). When you add salt, that temperature drops: A 10-percent salt solution freezes at 20 F (-6 C), and a 20-percent solution freezes at 2 F (-16 C). On a roadway, this means that if you sprinkle salt on the ice, you can melt it. The salt dissolves into the liquid water in the ice and lowers its freezing point.

If you ever watch salt melting ice, you can see the dissolving process happen -- the ice immediately around the grain of salt melts, and the melting spreads out from that point. If the temperature of the roadway is lower than 15 F or so, then the salt really won't have any effect -- the solid salt cannot get into the structure of the solid water to start the dissolving process. In that case, spreading sand over the top of the ice to provide traction is a better option.

When you are making ice cream, the temperature around the ice cream mixture needs to be lower than 32 F if you want the mixture to freeze. Salt mixed with ice creates a brine that has a temperature lower than 32 F. When you add salt to the ice water, you lower the melting temperature of the ice down to 0 F or so. The brine is so cold that it easily freezes the ice cream mixture.

I noticed more sand than salt when it snowed here last week.

I forgot what it was like to drive through the snow after 3 years in SF. I also forgot to pack my ice scraper. I was clearing my side windows with a 1 inch wide straight razor blade! :pissed:

Sucked.

I gotta get my car washed before the salt and sand set in, but it keeps raining.

There isn't enough ice. It's not very cold out here, so even if it does get icy, it melts on it's own.

I use to drive a crappy stock Civic during the winter and my Cobra during the summer months.........That way you don't have to worry about the NaCl or the pebbles....

If you went to Bear or Summit, then YEAH, you probably boarded on dirt! lol

I went up a couple weeks ago, and all of the runs had big sections of just...dirt.
