She makes fun of the stereotypes, but doesn't do anything clever with it  . Its just a really bad video and horrible song. Please tell me what you guys think.

so is this song suppose to appeal to...white boys? cause thats what i'm getting from the idiotic lyrics. great natalise, your a SELL OUT. and no, i don't think all asian females in the spotlight are sellouts but god..who thought of this crap? *this coming from a guy that bought her first album* i was surprised first that she hadn't quit her music career and second by how awful she is.

The video wasn't meant to make fun of stereotypes, really if you think that's bad check her other video out 'get me off'. No explanation needed.

I don't care if she's a sellout (her life has nothing to do with mine), but her music is awful.

Not really. This video even takes her down a notch or two further. I guess in the entertainment biz, you have to sellout to sell, especially since Natilise is limited vocally.

note to deez nuts: watch with sound off. then yes, it's worth watching for you.

Okay, regarding the song/video. Reading the description, I take it AngryAsian ripped her a new one and she responded via youtube with the video and this:

IN RESPONSE TO ANGRYASIANMAN AND OTHER ANGRY ASIAN MEN:

Dear AngryAsianMan,

I have to strongly object to your assessment of my video. For you not to see how I have subverted every Asian stereotype I could get my hands on in a comical non-threatening way, you must have blinders on. Rather than see an Asian woman as having stepped outside the box we've been programmed for, you prefer to see her as missing the bulls-eye by a mile, which makes me think that indeed I did hit the bulls-eye, along with a nerve. Honestly -- were you a little threatened by all this? Did you not like my character in the video flirting with the white boys? This is so hilarious to me because if Asian men like you could for one second look past your own insecurities of believing that these stereotypes could actually be true, you'd realize that I'm making fun of all of it. These stereotypes are so ridiculous, and that's why it's funny. It's so blatantly obvious. But instead of supporting a breakdown of stereotypes through humor, you took a CHEAP shot at my music, my craft, and basically my career.

Now, if you don't like the song for its musical qualities, then you are of course entitled to your opinion. But what I AM disappointed with is that you have a voice and platform in the Asian American community, and you're not using it to encourage social progression. By you missing the whole point of the video, you are just another reminder of why Asian stereotypes still exist. They exist because people like you harbor anger and won't let them go. Be above it.

What I've accomplished here I am VERY proud of because I've (albeit with your help) started an incendiary debate - one that has needed to come out for a very long time. Asian women like me have a lot of strong feelings about our role in society, both in the Asian and American mainstream. We are bold, intelligent, sexy, and strong. And yes, we KNOW people want our "fortune cookies." HA! It's funny. We're not going to give it up at a drop of a dime to guys like you or even the next white guy (or black guy or any other guy). Yes I said it. And it's high time someone spoke or sang about it. That's precisely what I've done. And for you to give that the back of your hand....well, as you put it so bluntly, "I'm not digging it." Your mother should be ashamed of you.

Why don't you let me have a paragraph in your blog so I can respond or better yet let's shoot a debate on all of this between you and me and let's put it up on youtube.

That would be lovely.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Natalise - NewAsianWoman

I can see what she was trying to do. I don't think she accomplished it. An example of what I think nails this parody genre well is BigBadChineseMama. On paper or in her head it may have worked out differently than how it was ultimately delivered.

She also released an "in character" intro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9lLDUMwjSc&feature=user) so I think it was truly made in the spirit of parody. Maybe she should just stay away from comedic efforts? It wasn't much better or worse than some of the stuff I've seen Bobby Lee do, to be honest. I always hated his "hot dog!" shit.

edit: hated the song, too. not trying to be mean but... hey, she put it up on youtube.

edit2: i, too, would love to see their debate aired on youtube

i didn't think it was "blatantly obvious" what she was trying to do w/ the vid. if at some point in the vid she made a point to throw off her disguises or something maybe it would have been more obvious.

Just because she understands what her intentions are doesn't mean that other people will view it the same way. It's an extremely simplistic way of getting your point across and it lacks any real communication substance.

What equally irritates me is that she has to touch onto the whole Asian female/white male issue when there is absolutely no reason to. It's almost as if Asian women who keep saying this are exactly the same as white people who "poo-poo" accusations from blacks when they complain about racism. It's used to silence all criticism and it makes peope afraid to complain and have their objections heard and I think it's worked to devestating effect on Asian men.

The more I hear this rebuttal thrown around, I think there are many Asian women who want to keep this issue brewing rather than fixing it. Before, I paid it no mind and just thought it was a stupid video regardless of stereotypes. Now, she's an oppressor.

it's obvious she was trying to make fun of stereotypes. but when people do this, they usually inject a sense of irony, cynicism, or paradox in the context. i don't think she managed to do this very well. it just looks like she's a sassy Asian girl prancing around with a bunch of white guys. of course she has every right to do this, both in real life or in her media presentation, but it's just kind of cliché.

Plz reference note to Nuts I left on page 1. Watch with sound off. There is ass and wiggling. She's not hot so much as not hideous. The big ticket items are checked off. No cankles, she has a waist, no serious cellulite I could detect. Boobage looked adequate, maybe a bit overzealous on hoisting the girls up. Pushup bras should not have to work overtime. She's not terribly old.

Whatever you do, don't watch the intro video. You do that I take no responsibility.

I agree - while I can see her intent - she really doesn't do a good job at it, and for those who are "less aware" - may very well take the wrong message from the video.

hahhah, good point.

i think if she had some Asian guys in the video, maybe she has more grounds to stand on in her defence of the video. but as it is, the video comes off as saying: "oh, we Asian girls are not submissive sexual playthings, but we still want white dudes over Asian dudes." and i don't think that's exactly the message she's trying to convey.

Forgive my mistake, it was very early in the morning and I did not see the existing thread.

I am somewhat surprised by all the hoopla on this. Some of the responses on her youtube comment area were very abrasive. I am not sure how big of a Hip Hop star Natalise is having never heard of her before but I am not a big fan of hip hop and would not be able to tell you who was famous in that genre of music anyhow. I was almost suspicious that this outpouring of rage was a set up by Natalise's publicity people to generate interest in the video sort of like when the movie people show a sexually explicit film in the Bible belt knowing full well that the ministers in the various churches will condemn the movie which they think is not suitable for people to see so the whole congregation goes out secretly to watch so they can see the unsuitable parts. Sounds crazy, but it is true. Great marketing ploy.

I watched several of her videos on YouTube. She seems to want to copy Britney Spears fashion wise, that same old tired cut off tank top, exposed waist and tight hip hugger pants. I think she is better looking then Britney, and probably can sing just as well also. Having said that, people get tired of seeing the same old thing. She should definitely carve her own niche fashion wise and shun the Britney Spears fashion collection. She seems to be well educated, started at Stanford at age sixteen and graduated at nineteen. That is very impressive. Seems to have a lot of drive and energy and doesn't seem to be too bashful either. She's young so she has a shot at becoming successful.

Stanford? Big fucking deal, my sister is also burmese, went to stanford, graduated and doing residency at the top med school in the U.S. They share the same thing in common, they're both completely clueless, and because of their success and confidence think they know it all. Having an education to brag about doesn't mean jackshit if you don't have the humility to listen to other people.

In Natalise case it's worse because she is still young and that makes her more naive, immature and arrogant. Making a video that has the same tasteless sense of Humor as american made asian porn is going to piss off people obviously.

After watching the Natalise video "Get Me Off" it kind of lets a person know that she is aiming at becoming the next Britney Spears type. The video starts off with Natalise with her "posse" in some grotesque Chrysler monster truck/Limo with a hemi. (Perfect vehicle choice to impress Toby Keith rednecks). They then step out of this monstrosity wearing the Britney Spears fashion collection with heavy makeup. They then encounter sort of a Kevin Federline, fashionally challenged wannabe who thinks he is cool. They then do a take off on that Budweiser commercial where everyone is gyrating and dancing in slow motion, then it jumps to Natalise and her "posse" starting up the number. The "posse" is composed of girls that do not look as attractive as Natalise. This is very important from a marketing standpoint. As Natalise said herself the music part is only 20% and the rest is Marketing and Booking. Natalie dances provocatively doing the occasional high speed booty shake and sings a song that sounds very high school. Choosing hip/hop was smart since the lyrics can be in the high school range. I think this whole "Angry Asian Flap" is a set up. I truly believe now that the people condemning her are on her side trying to get people to listen to her music. Regardless of the so called "controversial subject matter" I think she is going to have a hard time breaking through. Maybe she should do a reality show.
