Song, Ming, Qing. Sound familiar? No, you are not learning Chinese history. These are the new streets being built in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul.

Mapo-gu (district) office in Seoul is planning to create these new streets named after three of China’s ruling dynasties in a 1.2 square-kilometer area in Yeonnam-dong.

Backed by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the district office is also planning to create a Chinatown in Donggyo-dong and Yeonnam-dong. In the proposed Chinatown, a big square, Chinese consulate, a Chinese garden, three Chinese-style gates, three Chinese streets, currency exchange booths and travel agencies will be built. This area will be decorated with traditional Chinese patterns, Chinese style streetlights and signboards written both in Chinese and Korean.

Considering the Confucianism-based politics and national policy of the Song Dynasty, (960–1279) which focused on developing Confucianism theories, many cultural facilities, including performing arts stages and traditional Chinese restaurants and bars will be built along Song Street. In Ming Street, clothing and accessory shops and shopping malls will be built, as the clothing industry boomed during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Reflecting the tea culture of the Qing Dynasty (1644-912), Qing Street will be built as a cafeteria zone where many teashops, grocery shops and antique potteries shops will be located.

Mapo-gu office plans to provide incentives and tax benefits to Chinese businesses, build a business center, educational institutions in the Chinatown and arrange a Chinatown festival in May, Chinese Food Friday on every last Friday of the month, flea markets and hallyu concerts with Korean entertainers.

While drawing the Chinatown construction plan to raise awareness of China in Seoul, Mapo-gu office recently opened Yeonnam Global Village Center (tel: 02-6406-8151) in February 2008 backed by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Located on the second floor of the Yeonnam-dong village office, the center provides up to 319 kinds of certificates, including tax, visa, alien registration and immigration, and interpreting services in English and Chinese for non-Korean residents in Yeonnam-dong in cooperation with the Seoul Global Center.

The head of the center, Liu Yan, 35, a naturalized Korean of Chinese origin, and staff of the village center also operate Korean and Chinese language classes for Korean residents in Yeonnam-dong and non-Korean applicants. Yeonnam Global Village Center is Seoul’s first administrative center designed to provide community services for non-Korean residents and there are plans to build five more of such centers in other areas of Seoul, including Seoraemaeul (Seorae Village) where many French residents live.
