View Full Version : HK movie quality going downhill

Most Cantonese/HK movies these days have gone extremely downhill (especially in the action genre thanks to pirating in proportion to profit loss and budget required to actually make a quality action film) where they seem to equate 'pop star/singer' with 'someone with acting skills' (oh wow, just like most other Asian cinema, crap *sag*), but I get the feeling that a) This topic has been beaten repeatedly into the ground and  it probably belongs in the art/entertainment forum/thread or sumthin like that.

I think the directing talent has gone down, and so has the writing, since of most the talent has gone to hollywood. Where's wong kar wai? besides directing dj shadow videos what else is he doing? I know chris doyle did work on Hero

wong kar wai is a lazy ass. he's working on 2046 right now starring my queen faye wong. i think he's in post-production.

actually there are some really good HK directors. WKW being one of them. then there's Ann Hui, Peter Chan, Fruit Chan, etc. that's actually not bad for a film industry that's even more commercially driven than hollywood. unfortunately HK's economy is in the dump right now and people just aren't spending money in the theaters anymore. VCDs are so cheap and pirating is so rampant. but i have a feeling whoever survive will be the ones that can produce quality cinema. i'm kind of hoping that the economic downturn will make HK cinema less commercialised so that more room is given to filmmakers to maneuver. during the haydays, with so much money to be made, unless you are following a money-making formula, you just weren't going to get funding for your projects.

yea, despite all of our bitching about the RIAA and the movie industry's tactics fighting piracy, the alternative is the industry being destroyed like in HK

As far as tapes go, the HK movies available in Chicago are pretty crappy. I think I saw recent selection of over 15 different slasher/horror movies -- some try to be funny, others really artsy -- even watched one called the "Other Senses" (I think) -- pretty much rip off of Sixth Sense.

I really didn't like Shaolin Soccer that much, everyone else said it was Stephen Chow's best work  .

Think just going to rely on HK TV series for entertainment these days. Just finished "Feel 100%".

This might not be new news to anyone, but I recently discovered:

http://www.lovehkfilm.com

Really great reviews for almost every recent HK movie and other pan-Asian movies!! The reviews are actually pretty critical, none of the sugar-coated stuff. Great site to go to for updates on HK film.

(Tour of HK really funny)

the worst hong kong movie ever (http://www.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2003/1/2/asia/flop&sec=asia)

A Hong Kong movie has ranked as one of the biggest flops of all time by attracting less than 10 viewers and making a total of US$42 (RM159) at the box office, a news report said yesterday.

oh and Infernal Affairs looks cool.....i wanna watch it with both endings dammit....

Wow that just makes me wanna check out the film, hahaha.
Easiest way to get me to want something or do something is to tell me I can't have it or shouldn't do it. :P

eh... how good HK movies do all depends on marketting, not quality of the films themselves.

The Infernal Affairs ending was altered specifically for the audience in China.....because it was not deemed apporiate for the audience in China.

man, even $70 seems expensive to me. but i guess that's cuz i got student discount, went in afternoons, and went to Fanling or Tai Po. ah, the advantages of living in "rural" areas ... hehe.

but i didn't get to see infernal affairs before i left. :(
