how come all "professional" asian women - or women of any color for that matter - feel a need to talk like men? <_<
do you guys know what i'm talking about?
really, it's not necessary. i know of many women who can command attention in the workplace and sound intelligent without lowering their voices a couple octaves.
eesh, never really noticed that. Where do you see it? I know some women feel compelled to dress like a man as in pant suits.

kas...I think I know what your talkin about...
I think the reason why some women do that is because they feel the need to show their power and "rank" and I guess by using a strong "masculine" voice, they feel it will help them get respect. It may even be because they want to show everyone how serious they are about issues, to be sure no one can think of them as being foolish???
I dunno, just my thoughts...

oh yes it does!!! i am really irritated by girls that fake that annoying baby voice!!!
I went to middle school with this girl and she was always like stuck up but spoke in her real tone of voice. Then 2-3 years later in highschool, I see her at the mall and she remembers me and comes up to me to give me a fake "I am soo glad to see you" hug and she had the most annoying high pitched squealing baby voice I have ever heard!!!!

yeah, I think some women may feel the need to lower their voices to fulfill the fixed white male privilege environment we live in. I don't think we need to suppress the intonation of our voice in order to be equal in the playing field, especially with our voices. If anything, our professionalism ought not suggest that we should lower our voices to "fit in" with the male standard of professionalism. We should, however, allow for us to change such a status quo through the politics of difference...which is liberating in itself.

You know who's voice is /really/ annoying? Sugarbaby's voice. You know, that cute, tiny squealy chick. If it's fake, she makes me sick. If it's real, I feel sorry for her. It must be hard to have a serious conversation with a mouse.

I have a rather low-pitched voice for a woman, though I never get mistaken for a man over the phone. I didn't cultivate it to sound more "professional": it's just my voice. However, once in high school I called a friend's house and her brother picked up and I heard my friend call from the background "Who is that?" and her brother answered "It's Elizabeth" and she responded "Does she have a high voice or a low voice?" and he said "a low voice". She knew another Elizabeth with a higher voice. So I became "Elizabeth-with-the-low-voice".

Isn't it just a natural thing that happens to your voice for it to get higher when you're trying to be polite and nice?

A girl I was dating recently told me I did this too. When I'm with a bunch of fellas, my voice drops to this low booming he-man octave, but when I'm with her I lighten it to a much softer, friendlier tone. Never noticed I did that until she pointed that out.

yeh...i kinda think it's opinions like these that make certain women believe that they have to talk in a lower voice to be more respective...or to sound more authoritative....

Personally, I think I tend to talk in a lower voice when I'm talking to a group of people on the signs of suicide because of the seriousness of the topic. In group projects, in class presentations... it's the same thing, but my voice doesn't get drastically low. If I want someone to take me seriously, I will have a serious voice to emphasize that this or that topic's not meant to be a joke. "I am my worst critic" as someone in YW told me...hehe... So, when I hear my voice on the answering machine, it sounds higher no matter if I'm serious or not. lol

I don't notice any of this stuff. 'CUz it really doesn't vary THAT much, and it's all pretty much subconscious stuff anyway. But I DO notice that when I'm sleepy or being sweet with the man, it tends to get a little softer and higher.

hmm, now as for guys voices
I notice that when I talk with girls I lower my voice subconsciously.
when I get to know people better I let it get high
and sometimes when I'm being sarcastic I'll use a high voice :)

I can understand why they would lower their voice a couple octaves. I am always labeled as a "valley girl" or "ditzy" because of the tone of my voice. Although I've never come across a woman who noticeably lowered their voice just to sound professional.

I have a high voice (some will go as far as to say childish), which is odd since I sounded pretty low for a little girl before puberty. Anyhow, sometimes my voice naturally goes low, but in a formal situation, sometimes I make my voice go unnaturally low (unnaturally low for me).
Because I don't look too old and my voice is high, a lot of times I don't feel as if I'm being taken as seriously as I would if I lowered my voice.
There have been times when I can almost definitively say that when I spoke normally I was brushed off or even taken for trying to be flirty, but then deepened a bit and the situation went 360.
I think a lot of women's voices get higher in formal situations, though, especially when speaking to men or unsure of themselves. . .Unless they are pissed and as confident as ever.

my voice is somewhat deep and hoarse. i can easily lose my voice if i went to an amusement park. this summer i lost my voice for 2 weeks straight. couldn't even talk for 2 days. it was sad, because as much as i write.. i talk that much too!
the way people have described my voice is similarly to kirstie alley. to that, i don't know if i should be offended. haha.. but what's even scarier is that my mom says my voice was deepest when i was 2 years old!!
