The only ones I can think of are HH and axiom, and blue collar jap.
There does not appear to be many.

Hmm...maybe we should do a "What Asian ethnicity are you?" poll.
Although I think it was part of the "What are you?" race survey thread.

I just ask because in many of the AsianAmerican circles of friends I never see many JAs and in all the student organizations at my college, Japan Club actually had more non-Japanese than anything else.
There was no Japanese representation in Asian American Student Union.
It seems to me that many Japanese Americans don't interact too much with Asian Americans, or even with each other. From an East Coast POV anyway.

It could be that by the numbers, there are less JAs than other AAs in the places where you interact with other AAs.
I'd refer you to the Census Bureau (http://www.census.gov), but I can't figure out where they put the Asian ethnicity tables. I've seen them before though.

Judging by names, there are at least a couple of mixed Japanese, Noriko, Hiroshi, etc. Also, I think Princess mentioned she was Japanese, but am not completely positive.

Princess is a fourth generation Japanese American.
I never see many JAs and in all the student organizations at my collegeWhere do you live, and where have you lived in the past? What schools? Maybe it's just the case for you at your school.
May I ask how you differentiate a JA student from another Asian? Do you expect the Japanese to wear bandanas on their foreheads that proudly display the Japanese flag? Or write on their foreheads, "Hi, I am a Jap" with magic marker, so that you can recognize them? I'm sorry, I don't think so.
It seems to me that many Japanese Americans don't interact too much with Asian Americans, or even with each other. I agree with Lethalweapon, but also, it depends on the given ethnic group's history in the US. Japan is closer to California than it is to any given Eastern state. Maybe that explains why there are more of them, here.
Perhaps next time, you could phrase that differently. In my experience, I have found that ...

I'm Japanese. Whether or not I'm JA depends on your point of view, as I have dual citizenship (US & Japan). IMO the reason JAs don't get together is because of the internment camps; all the FOB Japanese I know hang out almost exclusively with each other.

Yeah I noticed that most fob japanese folk dont hang out with JA's, but they throw down with everyone else.

Not quite.
I'm a slightly Japanese white girl turned Chinese fob wannabe. I think Japanese have a high outmarriage rate also so there's a good number of mixed Japanese.

i heard on some show.. that 70% of japanese marry out of their ethnicity..
dunno if that number is true though.
I think.. (generalizing) Japanese American's tend to be the most assimilated group out of koreans and chinese.. which i think is why less of them identify with AA's rather than just Americans.
Are there Japan-towns around the US? that are as big as the chinatowns?? cause i'm thinking.. maybe the lack of ethnic ghetto's for japanese contributed to their assimilation into western culture...

There are three Japantowns that I know of in California. Japantown in San Francisc, Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, and San Jose Japantown. There used to be around 40 of them nationwide, but they'd died down to just the three.
You're right. Japanese Americans have the highest outmarriage rate of all Asians in the US.
If you're interested in learning a little about the old Japantowns, go HERE (http://members.tripod.com/runker_room/tiestalk/oldjtown.htm).

Ehh? Why would I want to go to Japan to find a JDM husband? To "prevent" the race from going extinct, like the dinosaurs? What're the characteristics of a JDM hubby, anyway?

thats the story of my life :frown: for 19 years ive been walking around wondering where all the JAs are besides around little tokyo and at my temple...but the thing is, maybe JAs dont interact too much with themselves or others because there arent that many to begin with...ive grown up actually knowing very few JAs and i live in southern cali :/
i think that if there were more JAs in general, the outmarriage rate wouldnt be so high...my family is into its sixth generation here and i have A LOT more hapa cousins (white, pilipino, korean) than full japanese ones...now that i think about it...the entire fifth generation is hapa...

Right now I live in Saitama, but I have lived my entire childhood and college life in Silver Spring, MD, a northern suburb of DC. In my highschool there were 4 JAs, the Tamanahas and the Yamadas. The Yamadas were the most non Asian asians I have ever seen. (I refuse to use the term whitewashed). Meanwhile if you didn't know the Tamanahas name, you'd think that they were ABCs, as most of their friends were ABCs.
Meanwhile in college, at the University of Maryland all of the Japanese people I met were all exchange students and visiting America for the first or second time. There were only 3 JAs that I met and those were my senior year and their preoccupation was finding Korean chicks. I rose through the ranks of Japan club which was mostly other Asians who had studied Japanese or who were interested in something about Japan, but we refused to join the Asian Student Union because of the basically anti-white stance that they had.
Dang girl, no need to get on the defensive.
I can tell the difference by a number of ways.
1) The name. This is my friend Michiko pretty much seals the deal.
2) Fashion, again this is not a 100% indicator.
3) Language when not using English, tho not 100% accurate, usually 70% of the time an Asian dude speaking Japanese on his cell phone is Japanese.
4) I can tell. I am one of those people who scored very high on the all look same test. I swear that you can tell what Asian country people's ancestors come from, while other people highly deny it.
Anyway I was just asking because I didn't notice a very high non Chinese presence on YW and it made me start to think about where I have met any other JAs.
Yea I guess it does heavily depend on what coast you are on and who you know..

Perhaps he's just hinting at things like similar cultural background. Higher probability of being accepted for you as a person rather than some stereotype. Less problems with/for the future kids.

Wow, I didn't realize that there were only 3 left in California. I used to work in an office in Japantown San Jose with 3 JA attorneys in a public interest place. The area was really nice.
Seattle seems to be the American city with the most JA people and culture, but I've never been there to know.

I guess I'm the only one who knows a lot of ABC girls named Michi or Mari? full Chinese too, not Taiwanese-Japanese mixed. And some of them were in my Japanese classes too. Man that was confusing. Especially when I heard them talking on the phone in Mandarin that was waaay better than their Japanese.

seems like these would only work for Japanese people, not JAs ... although I guess if you got your #4 going it's all good.

These work fine for some 1st or 2nd gen JAs. Again, it's not 100% accurate, but lots of AAs try to emulate what they percieve to be the style in whatever country they or their ancestors came from. Tho it is increasingly hard to tell with Japanese people cuz sanrio is popular everywhere and so is pokemon. But if you see someone walking around with something a little more obscure in the states like miffy or the dragon quest slime then pretty much chances are they got it the last time they were in JApan. And if you see someone with mashimaro then they are most likely korean.
Again, I admit to making mistakes, because even the name test doesnt always work when you have a chinese american named Jennifer Lee, or David Park. Not to mention the million or so Chinese Hwangs out there when they should be spelling it Huang like all the other chinese people, but japanese names are very obvious and totally different from those of Koreans and Chinese.
