yellowface is still alive and kicking in this day and age. angryasianman reports that white guy David Anders has been cast to play Hiro's hero, the samurai Takezo Kensei.

maybe they'll put a nice twist to it and explain what a white dude was doing in historic Japan being a samurai. but then again, why didn't they just cast a Japanese guy?

I find this all kind of funny. Do white people actually believe that there were white samurais? or were there really? cuz that'd be interesting.

I've already had a discussion about this with some other people and there's a bit of new information which i'm not going to disclose cuz it might spoil everything....

But what I can say as a fact, yellow facing or whatever you're thinking of isn't going to happen.

edit: Have a bit of faith the show is progressive in terms of minorities so the idea that they are going to do something racist is quite unthinkable.

I'm sorry, but the five rings was written by a Japanese samurai. And who the heck is buttermilkwise?

Ok I guess I'll have to spoil it now the was a press conference recently indicated the assumption a white guy playing the samurai was false.

This means Anders plays Kane who is Takezo Kensai, but the Takezo Kensai in the past is most likely going to be Anders in a different form. Which means the Samurai is going to be played by a Japanese or Asian guy.

edit: if you figure out my screenname i'll give you 5$ paypal ;)

Just use your imagination, some supernatural power like, shapeshifting, illusion, spirit possession. Whatever it is, what your going to see in Heroes I'll bet you 100% it is a Japanese guy playing a Japanese samurai, it's not what it seems.

alright, i guess we'll have to wait and see how they play it out. it did seem too ridiculous for how this show has progressed for them to stick a white guy in historic Japan as a samurai. but even if Anders plays some modern day version of Takezo Kensei, they still better have a good explanation for why he's white instead of Japanese. because i don't see why a modern day samurai has to be white.

edit: Have a bit of faith the show is progressive in terms of minorities so the idea that they are going to do something racist is quite unthinkable.

i like the show but i don't think they're really that "progressive" in terms of minorities. i guess the portrayal of the Indian characters were pretty good, but what, the major black character is an escaped prisoner and the Japanese guy speaks with a thick accent and is nerdy? that's really not that progressive. the writer originally wanted Hiro to yell out "Banzai" when he first teleported to NYC. he changed it because Masi Oka told him nobody in Japan actually says that anymore. if not for Masi Oka, who knows what other dumbass thing they would have had Hiro do.

Or they feel that it's a subtle throwback to the days of Carradine in Kung Fu.

That's not supernatural. That's rice fantasy fuel.
