Are there enough people on YW who are religious to have a Religion/Philosophy forum?.....You guys have everyhing from Current Events to Sex and Relationships...and they are all cool....but what about those of us who want to explore our spirituality, religious beliefs and philosophies?
Just asking...... :)

I have a feeling that will turn out to be another "Rant Room."

I agreed religion/philosophy forums tend to be very volatile. I would suggest against it.

mike, I'd like to have a religion forum since it's a topic that interests me, but as some of the mods have pointed out, it's so easy for that to turn into a very hostile rant room II. I think having such a forum might be possible if we narrowed the scope of its discussion...but I have no idea on how to do that. If you have any suggestions, please toss em out...! :)

you just need a vigilante mod(s). i think it's a good idea because it would surely generate lots of discussion. just don't expect me to be there though! hahahh! i think religious discussions, which more often than not are arguments about christianity, are pretty pointless because it always breaks down to whether or not god exists.

I think you'll need to be very clear in the rules such as:

- no trying to convert anyone
- state your beliefs and views but don't attack anyone elses
- discussion should only revolve around religion, not how anyone's life is against or for religions (i.e. I live my life according to the bible vs. you're burning in hell because you go drinking at night)

Unfortunately, I think it's going to have to be closely monitored because people can get out of hand when discussing religion. It is fundamental to their lives and some, not the majority, will believe that if you state contrasting opinions, you are attacking them personally.

That's why they say two things you shouldn't discuss are religion and politics, and those are two of my most favorite topics!

I agree that there shouldn't be direct personal attacks, but mild missionizing shouldn't be openly DISallowed. After all, the main pt of some religions is conversion, and I don't think we should trivialize that.

On the other hand, a "xx is a WHORE and will burn in HELL" is something we would like to discourage. But I certainly don't think we should silence someone's belief that people who have premarital sex will burn in hell, just because it may be "offensive."

The points of Christians and NonChristian tends to lean towards if there is a god or not. Then it usually again pits the Christians with the Muslims, Buddhists, Catholics, Hindus and Wiccans. That how it usually ends up like. I get quite weary of telling people not to try to convert each other and ALL RELIGIONS ARE EQUAL. I modded the Religions Threads before in other forums and I have known to lock down topics. Unless firm rules are set. You are going to see some very hostile conversations.

Not attacking anyone's religious backgrounds. But I don't see anything good coming out of it outside of a Rant Room part deux. Questioning someone's religious background is akin to questioning that person. Ok so we can put guidelines, have it modded and placed under constant scrutiny to prevent personal attacks. But I think what is said in the rules and guidelines aren't always adhered to.

And like Lama said you have to cover it from all angles religion vs religion and then religion vs all the others that don't have a religion.

You're already allowed to post religious/philosophical stuff wherever you want. Why do you need a whole section for it?

....just because there are rooms just for auto-tech, sex and relationships, men, women, students, etc.....
I think it is only fair to have a section just for religion and philosophy.
I guess I was thinking more on the lines of a place where people can ask others about meditation, theology....maybe discuss the difference between theistic and non-theistic beliefs....A place where people can talk about their spirituality without being slammed about what they believe from others....like in the Rant Room. A place of mutual respect.....I had no intentions of asking to form a forum where people go for God/no-God arguments because I have agree that those discussions are pretty pointless.
I don't think I have any suggestions about how to monitor the forum....except making strict guidelines about what can be said....but then that would restrict people's free speech....??

^-- You can make strict guidelines all you want, but when people feel as strongly as they do about things like religion and stuff, people won't follow them.

*Shrug* If you wanna talk about stuff like that, you can post it up and talk about it.

I thought somebody was trying to pass an amendment to the charter of the Y.W.M.W.S. that all the members needed to convert to Islam. Think it was the "4 wives is better than only 1" agenda discussion.

well if that's the only purpose, why not convert to Mormonism?
