Just kind of curious. I was under the impression that Asians in general are allergic to alcohol, so being the smart guy I am, I decided to conduct an extremely scientific survey on YW.

I'm a lightweight, but I hide it well. I can still drink with the big boys.

I'm not allergic to alcohol....let's just say, I drink with the men!!! LOL
Actually, I should say...I can outdrink some men :)
Ahhhh...I remember many nights at Palm Tree L.A. drinking til they closed.
There was a time in my life where my buddies and would be drinking every night, easily having a pitcher-ful of lemon soju each. That is, until the doctors started telling me to stop. :gross:
But since my liver can't take anymore, I guess I'm a lightweight?
Ohhhhhh man where's Sy. He's got some stories to tell about Palm Tree...

for some reason, wine messes with me like nothing else. maybe it's something to do with another ingredient besides the alcohol? never figured that one out. i'm about average tolerance otherwise, i guess, I won't be the first one falling over but I'm not gonna be the one pushing everyone else to have another round when they're all falling over either.

I can drink a decent amount. (decane amount = had a few whiskey sours and a glass or two of wine at a cousin's wedding (open bar!) and only felt slightly sick)

What does this mean?! If you're a lightweight, by defnition you shouldn't be able to hang with the big boys. Unless, when you say you "hide it well," you mean you do what some of my sick-ass friends do and "hide" their stomach contents in the toilet and then drink some more...=P =)
I'm weak as shit. Whenever I drink, I turn super red, and get itchy all over. I used to either pass out or throw up. There was no happy medium. I was building up a bit of a tolerance where I could get that nice buzz/dizzy state going on without a hitch, but then something happened. Now I'm kinda back to my old self. Very distressing.

I mean nobody ever notices how drunk I am until it's way way too late. I'm a total lightweight. I get a buzz from 1 and a half beers... but I can drink a 12 pack and still be standing. But there's a line that, once crossed, I can no longer hide my drunkenness. After that, it's just continual puking and acting really really REALLY stupid.

Not allergic at all... and it really depends how much of an affect on alcohol... how fast i drink (if i chug, oh man it's all over); what i drink; if i've eaten anything prior to... too many variables.
it's weird, because the amount i drank during the one and only time i've yakked, i surpassed later over the summer... sure i felt sick as hell but no yakking.
i can act drunk very easily (if i don't feel like getting pressured to drink anymore... what can i say, i'm an actor), but it takes quite a bit for me to actually not be able to remember what goes on or lose control.

somewhere in between. I could probably train up my tolerance more, but I'm not going to SCREW around with my liver.

My tolerance varies according to an unknown factor, so I never know how much I can drink.
But I'l with BTR and Tawee...I could drink like a champ in college. Now I'm a 2 beer a night sissy.
I can get tipsy for a couple minutes if I down 1 beer really fast.

Waaaay too much some nites.
To the poiint of gut rot from drinking all nite.
Once i start drinking, i always get so messed by the end of the nite. I dunno, seems like that's what happens to everybody i party with.
i hope it doesn't hurt my body that much.
I limit my binging to once or twice a month now.
I used to binge a couple nites a week.

i don't turn red, and i can drink quite a lot.
though, i haven't been drinking much lately so i'm not sure if my tolerance level is still where it is.
whenever i drink w/my buddies at school i don't really ever get too shit-faced. i get a little buzz going and then stop cause then i gotta watch out for everyone else. hopefully i can drink more during the summer.
p.s. i can shotgun like a champ. :D
I had a 12oz Dogfish Head Raison D'Etre (8% ABV) and a La Fin Du Mond (9% ABV) and I think I'm good for one more... got a 750mL Saisson waiting for me... I think I'm still coherent.

I can drink. I'm also 190 lbs, though, so pound for pound I'm probably only slightly above average compared to most people in the U.S. Also, I don't turn red; I turn greyish white. I'm voluntarily cutting back these days, though, since I think I like alcohol just a little too much and might have alcoholic tendencies. Last weekend I had a one and a half 40s and seven shots of vodka. That actually made me feel pretty drunk.
I'm not one of them, but for those Asians who turn red, it's actually because they have too much of an enzyme, not because they're deficient. Alcohol metabolism takes place in two steps. Alcohol dehydrogenase converts ethanol to something else, and a second enzyme finishes metabolizing the intermediary product. People who are "allergic" to alcohol have too much alcohol dehydrogenase so the intermediary product, which is an allergen, builds up before the second enzyme has a chance to finish metabolizing it. So the next time somebody tells you're "deficient," you can correct them and let them know that you have too much of a good thing.

is it ethanol decarboxylase?
i don't turn red, but after a bunch of shots (maybe 4 - depends on how fast i down them) i start talking stupid. acting stupid, too. maybe after 6 or 7, i can't walk straight.
one of my friends (she's asian) turns red after a few sips of wine cooler. a few sips! i'm like, what?!?!

moJo is skurry when she drinks.
Hrm, I used to have an extremely high tolerance to alcohol. Used to drink heavily at least 3 times a week before. Finally my body couldn't take it anymore and I decided to cut down a bit. Tolerance nowadays is still so-so, but not the same as it used to be. Then again, I'm usually designated so I have my excuse not to drink.

I get red from the chest down if I drink enough to get drunk, and it itches like hell for a few days.

I like one drink every once in a while.
My experience with alcohol went from naive imbiber to sophisticated drinker. Drinking and quiet conversation, or just a drink after a nice dinner is fine.
I always observe the one-drink limit.
So, having drank so little, I never became allergic.
