i used to go to a lot of those when i was in junior high school and high school. i graduated high school in 96 so it was awhile ago.
it was before all those asian clubs started popping up.
they were held at banquets in korean restaurants or small neighborhood clubs.

it was good clean fun. no drugs, no smoking, no alcohol.
just.. dancing.

you high schoolers may want to try this:

while i was in high school, we got together with the asian clubs of the other high schools in the area and rented halls to throw these dances. we'd design and print our own tickets and fliers, hire deejays, hire photographers, and actually make money off of these dances.

we threw about two or three a year--just a group of close friends--many from the east bay and san jo.

our dances were held at the san ramon marriot or the henry j kaiser in oakland.

they were called:

1) in the still of the nite

2) levenix

3) levenix 2

4) levenix 3

5) use your imaginasian to see the creasian of a new generasian of hella asians dancing under a phatty roof while drinking juice in da hood. (that was in '96. i'm old :) )

There were a good number of those in Boston when I was in college, back in the stone age. That's how I got into music, clubbing, and DJ'ing. Aah, the memories...
There used to be many in hotels (in their ballrooms), but that seems to no longer be the case. The emergence of Asian nights at clubs probably had some to do with that. Maybe renting out the space got expensive too.

That is creative!

I've never heard of what you guys are talking about, since I live in a city where it is often rare to see anyone who isn't black or white, let alone asian.

hmm, they have them in college too... well, catered toward college students.

i went to one a few weeks ago called Unity in LA. basically, chinese american students from UCSB, UCI, UCR, UCSD, and USC; as well as indonesian, hong kong, and korean international from USC. the company (underworld) throws parties all the times at clubs in various metropolitan areas of Cali catered to certain culture clubs/frats/sororities... partly to make $ and fundraise
