I'll profess ignorance and ask that you inform me.
I've met quite a few international/exchange students from East Asia. I've noticed that quite a few of them have gray teeth. Someone once told me that it was because of calcium deficiency. I'm not sure how accurate that statement is, but if it is true, are dairy products and leafy greens not part of the diet over there?
I know that Lao food has very little dairy in it, but we eat leafy greens. I've never met a Lao person with gray teeth (tons with yellow teeth, but no gray).
Some of the female international/exchange students are really pretty, but there's something really unattractive about gray teeth.

Well,
In Japan and Korea, in the places that I have been to, Milk is considered a foreign thing.
Tho I must say that on average Koreans in Seoul have better teeth than Japanese in Tokyo.
I think that has something to do with nationalized health care taking care of dental plans in Korea and not in Japan.

Aren't most Asian people lactose intolerante to a certain degree, anyway? At least just a little bit?

A lot of people, including most non-Europeans (and quite a few people of European ancestry), can't digest milk properly as adults.
There might have been a YW thread about milk on here a few weeks ago, but I think it was something to the effect of who could digest milk.

Mine too, but we don't really like it. And it gets some of us gassy sometimes. Too much of it, at least. Nah, my family owns an ice cream store. We are most def not lactose intolerant. Just straight MILK grosses me out and makes me feel sick.

haha. my uncle used to drink milk like nuts. half-gallon, gallon a day. no problems with gas either. he passed the habit along to me. but I'm taking a break from it while i'm over in HK.
I love milk and all things derived therefrom.
My ex kinda had slightly funky colored teeth. She claimed that it was from some antibiotic or something that she took when she was younger...tetracillan or something like that. Any such thing, Doc?

Yep, Arex.
I think milk is just part of the problem in bad teeth. Like BTR said nationlized health care (i.e. the dental plan). Such as orthodontists, periodontal gum disease, simple teeth bleeching etc etc.

Hmm...well, as far as I know, in China, people tend to buy powder milk (evaporated? condensed? what's the word?) and they don't eat solid yogurt, but rather drink a more liquidy kind. I think cheese and butter are relatively uncommon, or at least not commonly used, but milk and yogurt have been widely available and used for quite some time.

they drink glass bottled milk at school in japan, at least i know they do in grade school.
staying on the bottle for too long can really mess up a kid's teeth, too. my auntie used to be a dental hygenist at a children's dental office. i'll call her a little later in the day and ask her some stuff about this. =)

It's also available in Texas. Well, at least in both the Dallas and Austin areas.

if you think about it...
your uncle has been drinking gallons of breast milk from another mammal.
don't you gain weight by drinking so much milk?
i know this girl whose parents forced her to drink a gallon of milk everyday when she was younger so she can gain some weight.
it worked.
i'll stick to soy milk.

I think Arex meant tetracycline. It's an antibiotic with wide uses.
Tetracycline can be deposited in calcified tissues i.e. the teeth. It is especially so during developmental stages in a fetus if administered ina pregnant woman. This is what leads to discoloration and staining of the teeth. I think someone mentioned this earlier.

One of the top 5 most beautiful girls I have ever seen in person had gray teeth. I was like... WTF. I always wondered what caused that.

I'm going to agree...not all countries have health statutes requiring that children use flouride in school once a week. and I don't think any other country teach children how to brush their teeth in school...i think it's just poor dental hygene. Or poor recognition in the importance of the above
