i was reading this article in the NY times about enimen.. and it sort of glazed over the racial undertones of his success as a white rapper in a largely black industry..
one of the dudes that the article quoted said that his success was due impart to institutationalized racism. And although i can see where his arguement is coming from.... i don't know if i fully agree.
I think in an industry such as hip hop music, being white doesn't really give you any benefits over being black. Maybe it may have helped him get a label to sign him, but it seems to me.. for him to be successful he needs the support of fans and people to buy his CD's. I dunno.. maybe i'm missing something..

There is some racism there. Eminem is really only popular in the white mainstream BECAUSE he's a white boy doing popular predominantly black music. So, white kids identify with him more, remember him more, and a big deal is made out of him. Take for example his racist and homophobic lyrics; black rappers have been saying similar (and worse) things for years, but only Eminem gets crap for it because it's only important when a white rapper does it.
Eminem is also making LOTS of money... him being white has played a huge part in helping him make the big bucks.

So is it also racism, if some Asian pop stars who are playing predominantly white music are successful, because lots of Asian kids listen to them? I rather think that being white has played a large part in him being blamed by various groups who feel offended by his lyrics and wouldn't dare to speak out against black rapers for fear of being branded as "racists".
i was listening this morning to hot 97 apparently benzino this rapper from boston has beef with eminem. they played the track where he attacks him. itll be interesting to see how em responds consdering most of his past "opponents" were easy tarets (ie moby, boy band members) who couldnt even retaliate by battling him...

Wow. Rap is music? Huh, who would've figured.
Anyway, "popularity" comes from a majority (said white people) liking it. And Asians being among one of the more few-numbered minority groups(Don't shoot! Statistics!), I don't think Asian Music will fly too well here. Hell, some will even have the misconception that it is that old violin-like-thing music. Others just won't like it, period.
Anyway, in my book, pop always leads to sell-outs and clones.
While we're on the subject of white rappers, Vanilla Ice never did too well.

Yeah, I heard it also this morning on Hot 97. Kinda like the whole jiggaman vs Nas thing. In the end both artists benefit cuz they get the burn they want on the air.
That joint "lose yourself " by eminem is hot though.

well, i don't think that is a fair comparison.
yeah, they are both white, but from what i remember Vanilla Ice was this rich suburban white kid who was trying to rap..
whereas Eminem came more from a lower class, and for the most part, raps from his real life experiences..

The guy can definitely perform some lyrical acrobatics but I don't really dig him all that much.

Nevertheless, I agree with SunWuKung...
Eminem is a whiny SOB...
Yeah all that whining about his ex-wife Kim, his hatred for his mom and his baby girl Haley is just getting played. But either way, he's getting paid in full gotta give him props for that.

Getting paid in full, CB?
Hmm, maybe I should consider rapping...
Adopting a stereotypical thug style...attempting to be as big as Eminem...
...but, then again...aren't I the wrong color?
No, I can't give him props, as he isn't doing anything special....
I give props to people who overcome odds, give a message, and give back to the community...(interestingly, some rappers, athletes--Black--don't do this)...
However, some do...
Anywho, to get back to Eminem... :retard:
I give him props for making it in an already tuff entertainment field dominated by blacks. Although I read somewhere most hiphop and R&B cd costumers are white. So if that's the fact, he's worth his weight in gold by being the only dominant white rapper right now catering to the white consumer and basically cornering the market by himself. And if he plays his cards right and he has so far, he'll be around.
Don't get me wrong there are a few joints I like, but overall he's not my thing and he's been grinding on my nerves since he became popular. That bitterness is getting old.
As for giving back, yeah sure it'll be nice. But bottomline it's his perogative if he wants to or not, it's his money. I ain't giving him props for being a humantarian, I'm giving him props for making it this far, regardless of how people view him.
So yeah I would say he's getting paid in full. What 2 platinum+ CD's I think, a movie coming out and merchandising? Hell yeah, he's laughing his ass to the bank. Future Vanilla Ice or not, if he manages his money right, he's set. He's just out there doing his thing.
There are alot of cats I give props to, but to gain my respect is a different story.

I'd also like to add that eminem despite being a redneck trailer trash reject overcame the obstacle of making it big in a black dominated music scene built on nepotism. Love him or hate him you got to give him credit, he paid his dues, he consistently dominated freestyle battles, put out records when he was underground, unlike a lot of rappers who just come out of nowhere, and have a image created by a huge creative team, and hot producer on the payroll by their label. dont even try to put his success on Dre's production, that cat jacks people's beats ask DJ shadow and Missing Linx'

well there is nothing wrong with white kids identifying more with him. he does after all look like them.
the reason eminem gets the attention he does is because of the viscious rancor and eloquence with which he makes his homophobe remarks. though I do not recall him saying anything racist

BTW, 3rdBass did very well....Beastie Boys did very well....
(FYI, for movie buffs, MC Search from 3rd Bass was recently in Spike Lee's Bamboozled...)
I predict Eminem will go the way of Pauly Shore pictures... ;)
Alright, I gotta go jog...
