you know that stereotype that all asians are computer geeks? well in a way it is true. look at korea. in korea 1 in 10 people play the online MMPORG lineage. 1 in 10. that is what, 4-5 million people? and MMPORG's generally appeal to a limited audience, so the total number of people in Korea who play video games ala counterstrike or starcraft probably number around 50-60% of the population. and that is just korea. taiwan is huge in that, so is japan. In california asian gangs congregate at internet cafes and there have been murders over something done in CS> also, can anyone seriously name the last time they met a computer illiterate asian male? this is, of course, speaking as a recovering computer geek asian male.

Hmm. I just like killing electronic bad guys. It gives me a sense of mightiness. But I don't think electronic gamers are automatically computer geeks. Being a badass PK doesn't mean you can program.
The fact that I used to use vi editor to code HTML in the early 90s. That's what makes me a geek. :nerd:

Really, huh? Well, I think these computers are too much computer, and not enough type-writer.
Ah well, I'm a console-dude anyway. And I think MMORPGs suck donkey ba--
This boradcast has been banned by a very, very powerful extraterrestrial military force. You may not see Grass Monkey again, and don't even try to look for him.

Holy shit. This sounds like my house. My loft and den are freakin computer graveyards. My husband always brings home a ton of computer crap from work.
You should see all the archaic PDAs around here. I could open a PDA museum.

i can't help it. even now i'm currently building my fianceé a p3 1ghz dually because she says her uni proc celly 550 is "lazy".
dually = teh yummy. i can't help myself. they're a little more costly to build, but the amount of power to abuse is too much to go back to a uni sys.
as far as pda's. i've been thinking of getting one. any suggestions for budget, yet functional?

lol, computers. you know, now that I think of it, I think I end up building a really powerful computer with great graphics and processor and then end up using it for mundane websurfing and word processing. Don't even play games really.
now as for PDA's, I just got a used palm V for 60 bucks. works perfect for me, use it for appointments, some notetaking, and doodling. it also has a very long battery life. I would not reccommed getting one of those pocket pcs because simply put that extra power is pretty much useless and it drains batteries too fast
but what about the truth about asians and computer games? I bet that if a poll were taken, asians would be the tops in percentages that play video games. and this is straddling all socioeconomic lines

I know quite a few Asian fathers of people with BS and MS degrees in Computer Science. Most of them don't want to touch a computer.

I just find it funny that in asia organized crime has a presence in the virtual world
i'm addicted to Counter-Strike a.k.a. Half-Life. In another life, I was probably a teenage adolescent boy.

u, me, and a million other people, asian and non-asian alike.
its not only gangs that kick it at the pc bangs -- plenty of decent people hit em up, too. sad that some people take a game too far and have to get physical. there are a few places 'round here that no one in their right mind goes to unless they have back.
and come to think of it....i cant think of any comp illiterate asian guys off the top of my head.

so what does this say about our cultures? in korea one reason for the huge gaming penetration is that the culture is so restrictive that online is the only way for many people to express themselves and be what they want to be, even if it is only virtual

For me and most guys I know, we have a need for some kind of real time interaction that is challenging. Maybe the adrenaline rush is addicting or maybe its something our minds crave to keep sharp.
Video games are easier to master than real activities or sports and therefore have the added bonus of instant gratification. In Korea and Taiwan, maybe there aren't as many soccer fields or parks for older kids to interact as there are here. Even if there are, its still easier to turn on the computer then to get ready and drive out to the field.
Also, in Asia, maybe the penetration of broadband is higher than it is here or the cost is lower.

Don't know about you guys, but I try to keep computer time and me-time at a balance. Sure, games are fun and all, but there are those who lose sight of reality and fantasy.
I'd like to keep the line between those two bright and red for myself, thanks much. :P
