Do you sometimes distance yourself from culture because you see it intertwined with elitism? If so, how has this impacted your life as to self-identity and personal values?

I don't understand the question. How can you distance yourself from culture? Your culture is a part of who you are...

Or were you specifically talking about American born hapas trying to avoid Asian things so as not to seem elitist?

Both. But mostly to hapas that were brought up in both cultures. Do you find yourself avoiding one or the other?

Again, I don't understand what you are talking about. If you're raised in the USA, then you aren't brought up in both cultures. If you're raised in Asia then you also aren't.

So are you specifically talking about hapas who have spent a significant time of their childhoolds in both Asia and in the US?

I apologize if I'm not making myself clear. BTW, this applies not only to hapas but all asian americans who were exposed to both cultures at the same time.

I grew up in Korea, but grew up in both western and Korean culture. I speak Korean and English and consider myself as being from both cultures, yet I have experienced many times, to distance myself from one or the other culture, depending on how I was treated by people from the respective cultures.

Well, I still don't see what you're getting at, but in my case, I've just been myself.

Yeah, I've been known to hang out with "black" folk and Latinos from time to time b/c I find it refreshing. Is that what you mean?
