I guess starting with the credits is always good: Jason Statham, Shu Qi, Tcheky Karyo, Francois Berleand, Matt Schulze.. Director Corey Yuen and produced by Luc Besson.

Let's see, Statham did a bang-up job in Snatch, and watching the previews led me to believe that Shu Qi is hot. Its an action-packed film with an [hot] asian actress in supporting role. How can it go wrong? 'Let me count the ways.'

I must admit that Shu Qi is hot even from a girl's perspective, but I also can't help but think that she is a complete slut. I think this stems from the fact that most of the HK movies I've seen her in, she plays a prostitute.

I didn't see Transporter, but the comment about her bad acting and thick accent also applies to her terrible Cantonese in HK films. Maybe someday there will be an Asian actress import who speaks fluent English or Spanish or something...

i think shu qi is very cute and charming. i like watching her act.

although she did used to play a lot of slutty parts in the past, she's progressing away from that. she started out with porn b/c she came from a really poor family and she needed to make a living. it was the only way she could break into the entertainment business. she admits herself that she was a pornstar in the past and would now like to move on.

she speaks horrible cantonese but she's fluent in mandarin. most h.k. stars now seem to speak horrible cantonese--it's almost like it's trendy or something.

just my two cents. i just happen to be a shu qi fan.

yeah she got typecasted alot in the past for slutty female roles, because she started out in soft porn, but now she's proven herself and is getting alot better roles. she has played some very good characters in smaller more independent projects, and she's actually a pretty good actress. she speaks accented cantonese, but hey, nearly all HK actors and actresses speak accented mandarin. by the way, Zhang Ziyi's role in CTHD was originally offered to Shu Qi. she didn't want to do it because she thought it was too physically demanding, and suggested Zhang Ziyi to Ang Lee.

Asian actors/actresses that speak fluent English? look no further than Singapore.

thats not the way i heard it. i read that she was offered the role but her agent saw a time conflict with some stupid commercial. the agent didn't think CTHD was gonna do well so he backed her out of it. oops... :P

Leon Lai was in one period piece in his early T.V. career with TVB in Hong Kong. But apparently, the only reason I saw it (and no one else in Hong Kong did) was because it was rated so badly, it went straight to rental for overseas audiences.

I was about 10 or 11 at the time and I really liked it though. Think it was called "Joon Man Goong Chun Kai" (some historical character.

Sorry about interrupting the thread....

Since I can't start a topic in this section,
will someone review the new 007 movie from an Asian perspective? Was it cool? Or are they capitalizing on this Evil Axis scenario? I haven't seen it, but I know that several Corean actors refused the part because they didn't want to disgrace their country (or the North either).

I wrote some comments about the Bond films in general HERE (http://www.yolkshop.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=2&threadid=676) in response to an article by Yolk magazine. If anyone else would like to write a complete review of Die Another Day, I'd be interested in reading it.

Yea I heard that the Korean language spoken in Die Another Day sucked ass (not surprisingly). Even my Korean is better (and I ain't Korean) after studying for a little over a year (whether the actors, including Rick Yune who is a Korean dude, were truly Korean or not).

On a side note, sure I agree that Korean actors/actresses agreeing to sign up for these kinds of roles may do more harm to the image of one's own native or ethnic country, but obviously Hollywood has no problem searching elsewhere (i.e. Chinese/Japanese/hapa people in need for an extra gig). At least if the actors are Korean, the language and pretty much overall image of the Korean ethnicity will not undergo further butchering.

Kinda like, if you're gonna cast someone in a stereotypical Asian role, wouldn't you rather have an Asian do it rather than a white guy in a mask? Anyways, I understand it's kind of a lose-lose situation here.
