Here are a few scarves I've started to knit. Does anyone else knit? I'd like to see your work.

doggy is too cute!

i haven't knitted for myself much these days.
the kind of yarn i'd like to work with is too expensive
for me right now
and i don't want to waste my time using cheap yarn.
but i've been getting requests from my friends
and they pay for the yarn so i've been doing that.

i got my friend the stitch and bitch books.
they have cool patterns and really good tips.

darn it. that dog is just too cute. posing like that.

janet. i've seen that yarn (in the second pic.)
at the craft store. how is it working with that yarn?
i think it would make a cute hat. the kind with the
ear flaps and the dangling pom poms.

it's not too bad working with fun fur, and I'm a beginner. i don't like to try expensive fabric right now. i'd like to see your work since u sound like you've been doing this for awhile.

oh yeah, i'm puppysitting. he IS adorable as he is in the photo.

all the needlework i've done. since all of the stuff
i've done hs been given away.
i'm starting a blog/archive online.

oh! i think i have mittens at home that i knit.
i'll post pics when i get home.

I got a Stitch and Bitch book too! Well, it hasn't arrived yet, but I am eagerly awaiting it. A coworker and I are also trying to get lessons in beginner knitting and dude, I am so stoked to begin learning. I found the cutest sweater pattern that looks like a cut-off hanbok that I am dying to become advanced enough to make.

Does anyone else do any other crafts? I've been really into beading and embroidery lately, as I've just started making my first few things. I know Meena does needlepoint and possibly crocheting? Anyone else?

i also have a Stitch 'n Bitch book!!!!!!!! A person at a place i volunteered at recommended it to me. love it. =) we should start our own club on yw. lol.

I think there is a Stitch 'n Bitch 2 book coming out too....

Other crafts... I started to crochet, but i suck at it. I made what i wanted to be a scarf into a cape for the puppy. lol. it curled up.... just technique probs. =) I'd still like to crochet better though.

People always told me to knit because it's relaxing. It seems hard though...The author rocks and YW women should get on the Bust forum which she created at www.bust.com which needs alot more Asian American women. I'm the bitchin' donnadarko. I can't tell if posters are Asian but the atmosphere is very white.

stitch and bitch books rock!!
oh janet. the second one already came out.
did you get the first one?
=)
i really like t hose. they have updated fashionable
patterns.
oh. i post pics of mits later.

kim. i don't know if there's a michael's in your area
but i picked up a class schedule for the michaels
in my area they have knitting classes there.
i know!! it's not as cute as those small shops. but oh well.

i'm really itching to start quilting but it's so expensive
and i can't afford to. but i bought a beginner's guide
last night. at least i can study it.

i don't know how the craft movement got so popular
these past couple of years.

Ok, I started my very first knitting project. It's *drumroll* a scarf! I call this original, one of a kind design "Swiss Cheese Wedge" because there are a lot of holes in it and the scarf is getting gradually wider and wider as I go on (I'm lazy about counting stitches). That is ok, because it's my firstborn and good practice. I will post pictures of the fugnacious final product =)

Well, mine are the cheapest of the cheap I picked up at Michael's, however, I found the coolest thread ever over at craftster.org on how to make your own cool ass knitting needles out of like, wooden dowels and even chopsticks. http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=2611.0 It's really long, but it has me on the lookout for appropriate chopsticks I can turn into handmade needles because it looks super easy.

I suppose I will do a (boring) knitting update =)

Ok, I've knit some more things and have started making knitting needles. I just found a cool ass thread over at crafster.org on how to make your own circular needles. Now I just need a Dremel tool...

I sold four of the scarf things. That was happy.

I experimented with a blue flower. It looks like a weird starfish. With a big hole in the middle. I'm ashamed to post a picture of it, a) because it's ugly and b) it took sooooooo long to make.

Right now I'm working on a black and pink striped scarf. I like it, but my pink yarn is slightly, slightly a tiny bit wider than the black. Has anyone encountered this with stripes? Will the scarf be all weird looking when it's done?

I knit through one whole ball of yarn in an effort to make a cowl. Sadly, being a novice, I figured it would be ok to knit it on 29" circular needles. The "cowl" ended up looking like a tire. I'm serious. Frogged it.

I know words like "frog." I still do not understand what "K2 Ktog" means. I refuse to learn.

I'm excited to try "thrifting" yarn. I have to force myself not to cut my sweaters apart.

I may start on my first pair of fingerless gloves or wrist warmers.

My name is Kim, and this is quite possibly the dullest post I've ever made on YW =P

Squeeee! I found cheap ass yarn on the internerd! http://www.knitpicks.com/ We are talking $2.29 for a 123 yard ball of 100% merino (look up "merino style"). There is also "wool of the andes" a 100% Peruvian wool for only a buck seventy nine a ball. Shipping is free on orders over $30.00 and even if you don't want that much yarn, you can always get a friend to go in on it with you to take advantage of the free shipping dealy.

So...I ordered some already. :D :D

Oh, and knitting update: I have finished one (1) fingerless glove, aka a tube with thumb holes.

I've found a few, the best so far is knitted on double pointed needles.

PS,

I got my knitpicks.com yarn. It's nice! The "wool of the andes" is kind of scratchy, but the merino style is so so soft. My only beef is that the skeins are on the small side, and the merino style doesn't come in worsted weight.

Scarves, wristwarmers, mittens, hats, whatever I can do that's relatively easy. This weekend I'm going to learn how to pick up stitches (so I can do mitten thumbs) and how to make cables.

Knitting is so nice, whenever I'm knitting I feel like I'm a much nicer person than I really am. Maybe it's because I'm usually knitting for other people, or because I'm doing something quiet and productive, or whatever.

OH! And I found a great book for beginner knitters. The Knitter's Bible. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0715317997/qid=1109619001/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/002-2853242-9439237) I have the hardest time working from illustrations but the pictures in this book are actually comprehensive.

the first cables i did were for steven's scarf.
that came out really nice and i couldn't stop
looking at it. i couldn't believe i made it myself.
i was a bit sad to see the project finished though.

This is a pattern for a hat I'm going to be working on for one of our corporate philanthropy projects. Once I finish the scarf and gloves, of course. It's pretty cute, so I thought I'd share the pattern.

Baby Hat

1 circular or double pointed size 4 knitting needle/s.

Use fingering yarn if you want to make this for a newborn. You can increase yarn size and or needles to achieve larger sizes.

Cast on 80 stitches.

Knit desired length – about 6 or so inches. Bottom of hat needs to roll up on itself to make the brim.

Start decreases.

Knit 6 stitches, then knit the next two together. Repeat all thru this row. (Should now have 70 stitches left.)
Knit one row even.
Knit 5 stitches, then knit the next two together. Repeat all thru this row. (Should now have 60 stitches left.)
Knit one row even.
Knit 4 stitches, then knit the next two together. Repeat all thru this row. (Should now have 50 stitches left.)
Knit one row even.
Knit 3 stitches, then knit the next two together. Repeat all thru this row. (Should now have 40 stitches left.)
Knit one row even.
Knit 2 stitches, then knit the next two together. Repeat all thru this row. (Should now have 30 stitches left.)
Knit one row even.
Knit 1 stitches, then knit the next two together. Repeat all thru this row. (Should now have 20 stitches left.)
Knit two together across row. (Should now have 10 stitches left.)

Divide these remaining stitches into two….5 and 5 and work 2 I cords.

Work I cords long enough to be able to tie at top of hat.

Knit one row even.

In knitting news, one fingerless glove is done. If anyone wants to create fingerless gloves, using a buttonhole instead of just a slit for the thumb hole is much better. I will post pics when both are done.

I have just started a cable scarf, but it might end up kind of on the thin side.

Noro scarf is a failure, it's too wide for the material. The yarn itself is very thick and pretty inflexible, so the scarf has no drape whatsoever. :frown: I'm going to have to unravel it, and the yarn is going to have to sit until I can find an appropriate project for it. I was so excited about my scarf of many colors too! Help?

It was that rainbow colored yarn. I'm turning the red yarn into the cable scarf. A bag might be a good idea, or like Rad said a hat. Oh, and I had knitted both skeins, because I'm such an optimist I thought by the time I was done it would work itself out. No such luck, though.

i realized i was knitting my drop stitch scarf

and realize the scarf is like 20 feet long.

so i undid more than half of what i did. and
i don't like it one bit so i'm thinking of undoing
the whole thing because the only reason i decided
to do a scarf was so i can get rid of the yarn.

So how is everyone knitwise these days?

I've gotten a load of scarves and hats and wrist warmers under my belt (all pretty plain, of course) so now I am working on perfecting cables and learning some more texture oriented knitting techniques.

Right now I'm knitting a pretty pink cable scarf, but I'm worried I won't have enough yarn - woe.

Also! My knitting class has gotten ker-azy! Everyone is learning quickly (except for the office manager, but she's ok with that) and they have started teaching other people in the office! We are becoming an office of knitters!

it's a lot more work than i assumed.
so i won't do it again unless it's a sweater that's
coming apart and is not wearable or donate-able (??)
or if it's a yarn that i really really love.
or a sweater from expensive yarn like cashmere that i
can get at thrift stores for like 5 bucks.

and preferably done outside where there's lots
of ventilation. because that thing was messy.
there was yarn fuzz all over my room.
and i couldn't stop sneezing.

so yeah i think it's worth it. just because
the sweater i frogged would've have ended
up in a landfill just taking up space.

i started knitting my first scarf today. yay go me! haha jkjk.
my mom is helping me, and i love knitting with her. she's happy that i'm going about the kind of things she did when she was my age (the only thing other than knitting that my mom and i love is baking... i still haven't warmed up to cooking yet) - except, when she was my age, she had already made her own sweater! sigh, i have a long looong way to go, but i'm glad i'm catching up fast. the yarn is the prettiest colour (shades of purple) but i just realized that there won't be enough to make a 5-foot long scarf, +_= oh ack, and that i might not find the same kind of yarn that easily. i would feel terrible about unravelling it and starting afresh with some other kind of yarn, so i'll just keep on knitting. to the girls and guys that have knitted scarves before, on average, how long did it take?
i'm a slow knitter so i'm sure i'll take longer than normal! eep.

but knitting is quite possibly, the most relaxing thing in the world ever. every night before i go to bed, i've been working on my scarf, and it's like travelling off into another realm! after doing hours of calculus homework and stressing out over university applications and things. my brother looked at me funny when i said it felt like doing yoga. but it has the most satisfying, calming effect. <3 i think i'm getting addicted.

i remember a friend wanted me and another buddy to knit scarves for another friend's birthday. she taught us how and provided all the materials- even gave us some 1-month deadline to finish. but we procrastinated and ended up having to knit all day, in school, at home, before bed.. and for some reason the scarf kept getting wider and wider. to this day i still dont know why it kept getting wider even though i tried to knit the same number of time for each row.

anyways, u guys are good at knitting - sell YW hats with custom names?

knitting two stitches together / one stitch twice because you were in a hurry.

I used the "Oddfellow" pattern from this book (http://www.jesshutch.com/booklet.html). It takes a lot of knitting in the round, but the critter is so tiny that it doesn't take a long time to knit at all. I used embroidery floss to customize the features.

did you use sugar and creme cotton yarn for the scarf?

i like the yarn that's on the bottom right. i've used a yarn
like that in past but just gave up. it's pretty but it was

the yarn is actually light gray, white, and peach and oh so soft! i think it's chenille.

yeah, i really like that bottom right one. my mom wanted me to make her a scarf using the one on top but it's 3 strands held together by a thin red string! i tried but kept getting stuck. she suggested i crochet instead....just using one hook instead of 2 needles.

and i agree with you on the knitting as meditation thing. it certainly makes ME a happier and calmer person and that really means a lot. =)

I'm on Ravelry, it's pretty neat. I basically use it to look at other people's knitting, especially for projects I am considering. I also like the organizational aspects of it, like listing (with photos!) your stash and works in progress.

They have a forum too, which is kind of hilarious with such topics as the dangers of posting your sock pictures on Flickr (cuz there are perverts, see, who will masturbate to your feet pics). I like the cat fights that happen, because with 99% female participation, it's all judgy and PMS-y.

You girls are killing me ABC, Rice Cracker. Really. I really think you are taking all of this way out of proportion. I'm not attacking the skill of knitting or the female image. I'm just playing male shovanistic pig as a joke. It's not like I'm here shouting derogatory remarks about women here.

Any of my friends in real life that I know PERSONALLY would know I'm just being stupid and will laugh it off, if I said something about knitting, they will call me a stupid dick, slap me in the back of the head and move on. No grudges or resentment.

I tried to apologize like a gentleman where i went wrong with you two on several discussions and that did'nt work. So it's on you two now. I see this is something more personal regarding me and not necesarily the post in itself. That's what it is.

With all due respect to you two as mods, this is not something to get all personal about. Both of you said worse things to me, threating me practically, whereas I treat you two with respect and stay cool about it.

So tell me what is the point of all this? Hmmmmm? It's not about knitting.

It's a ego issue. Yeah. I nailed it. Right on the head.

Interesting Rice Cracker that you called my comment "disingenuous". Like I'm insensitive or insincere to women and their POVs. Most of my comments and OPs express nothing but appreciation for the strong AFs and Hapa women here on the forum. I'm shocked that you would come out of the blue like that.

This is uncalled for. Straight up. Maybe you should look at my recent posts and OPs and see that my positive posts, prasing AFs for their efforts outweigh one silly comment by leaps and bounds.

Think about it before you start deleting my posts on the excuse that I was 'off topic' again or ban me over conjured up false accusations on my bias towards women in general based on this comment.

Guys, Asian men in particular (like myself) are not all truely biased against Asian women calling them Asian whores (I know that is where you will bring it next with me) Many men try to be civil and understanding as to women and their POVs despite the bullshit we get sometimes.

BUT,not all the AMs and hapas (like me again) on this forum are NOT pushovers either. We have a right to say what we gotta to say without censorship, false accusations or threats too. Not just the female mods on this site with power to delete posts or ban blah blah blah. and time again accept my apologies.

Again, this is a ego issue. that's what this is. I'm not like that. I can be a very humble person, if people would only give me a break already.

Winter is just around the corner. Does anyone have any knitting ideas? I haven't knitted in a couple of years because of school and work down in Miami. Plus, there's no reason to knit down there because it's always friggin warm. Now that I'm back in St. Louis, tis the season to knit....
