errrr....
dunno if this is in the right forum...
but it does have to deal with the korean lifestyle...
and what have you...

but yeah, being in korea...
i have learned something new...
its how the toilets are designed
in some places...

i recently visited this orphanage...
in the village called chuncheon
and i had to go to the bathroom...
and when i did...
the toilets in the bathroom stalls...
werent like your normal toilets...
but it was made like in the ground...
so when you go to the bathroom...
instead of sitting on the toilet seat...
you had to squat...

and its not just in villages
where i've seen such a thing...
but here in seoul too...

awkward experience...
i really didnt want to use it...
but i had no other choice...
cuz i had to go that badly...

and oh yeah, another thing about
korean public bathrooms...
ive notice how
in a lot of places...
they dont put individual rolls of toilet paper...
in the bathroom stalls...
but they just put one big one outside...
kinda like how bathrooms have
paper towels outside of the stalls...
so yeah, you have to roll as much toilet paper...
that you need first...
before go to the bathroom...

and quite a few times...
i've encountered the
toilet paper dispencer empty...
which made me learn...
if your traveling within korea...
always have your own
roll of toilet paper handy on you...

lol...
i was in seoul...
at some bar/club...
when i first encountered
my first squat toilet...

and hahaha...
i SO did not want to use it...
it looked too weird for me...
something i was not use to seeing...
so i ended up turning around...
and decided that i would just hold it in...

but yeah, it was an experience
when i first ended up using one tho...

my grandparents has lived in public housing in HK for decades now, and i remember up till when i was little, they still had that kind of toilet at their place. i forgot when they had a sitting toilet installed but it was before my family moved to the US.

When I was in Thailand many years ago I remembered people having to buy toilet paper either that or pay to use the restroom at department store. They would have bathroom attendants in front of the restroom collecting money.

i saw the squat toilets in the train from shanghai to beijing. its china's most modern train besides the maglev i think. the maglev is cool as hell btw.

china also rates its public restrooms. i saw a 4 star restroom in tiananmen square that was pretty plain. it was far from the coolest restroom i had seen in china, and it smelled ... shitty. not 4 star worthy in my book.

I've read that some people believe that squatting is better for emptying the bladder and whatnot.

I wouldn't mind pissing in a squatting toilet, but I can't imagine shitting in that position.

I'll stick with my porcelain crapper.

squatting while going to the loo is actually much better for you, particularly women as it encourages us to use our quads and pelvic floor muscles, thus preparing the muscles for childbirth, reducing possibity of caesarian birth and also in old age helps to prevent things like incontinence, both of which are ridiculously high in western countries....

having said all that, its 'nicer' having a sittie loo cos its just 'easier'...my grandparents had a squattie loo but now have a sittie one, and god if its possible to be in luv with a loo, then i think i am!! it has this shower head thing attached to it so you can 'wash' b4 you go...i mean how cool...so fresh and so clean!!

Just hold it and walk to a department store restroom. Or if you're in a bussiness district area, such as Kangnam or Chongro, walk to the fanciest building, walk in as if you owned the building, and then use their restroom, they're much cleaner, and they also smell great.

Ooh, bidet action.

I want a Japanese smart toilet that will wash my ass for me. Then blow dry it. Then spray it with talcum powder. Then say "thank you" as it flushes itself for me.

When I went there, I saw one bathroom with those squatters, and there was no way in hell I was going to use 'em. I held it until I got back to my uncle's or grandparent's home where they have the normal toilet. Actually, the month I spent in Korea, I only one bathroom like that, everywhere else was normal.

On the topic of toilets, I knew this one guy who went to China and he was riding this train and had diaereha so he went to the bathroom. The bathroom had a stripper-like pole and in front of it was a small hole that lead straight down to the tracks. And around this hole was shit and piss because the train's ride was a bit on the bumpy side. So this guy said he took off his pants, held onto the pole and tried his best to aim. But it really didn't work because of the slippery floor, smale hole, and bumpy ride. That was one of the more memorable moments in China for him.

Talking about clean toilets, has anyone tried those that have the automatic wash that cleans your butt after you're done with your deed?

They're quite popular in modern Korean houses

is that in the countryside?
in the elementary school i went to, in tokyo. and maybe a train station or two? this was in 1995, maybe it's all changed now.

i'm sure most toilets in japan are the sit-down kind. they've got the seat warming, water squirting technologies.

i think that started in japan. it feels kind of weird.

They are indeed more sanitary, until as a clumsy Westerner you lose your balance and fall in.

By the way, I've always heard of these toilets being referred to as "Turkish" toilets. Maybe it's because travelling east, Turkey is the first place where Europeans encounter them. The native habitat of the Turkish toilet, and its various subspecies, probably ranges from East Asia to China and Central Asia, the Middle East, and parts of eastern Europe.

great minds think alike. no ass touching a seat. of course that's assuming everyone else has been scoring bullseyes previous to your use. otherwise you have to brace yourself up in that shit like Spiderman in a full split, making sure your cell phone and glasses are well secured.

For questions about Japan:

Public toilets are mostly the squat variety.

Private ones are the sit down bowl type.

i've seen them in cafes in korea.
i've never tried using the features because
i wasn't comfortable having my a-hole cleaned
like that in a public bathroom.

I see the bidet thing at a local shop. They have a video running about it and all I could say was "whoa..." I've never used one but looks like quite a marvel and saves on toilet paper.
